Damage/Repair, Some oxidation on the surface. Rusted surface, chips at edges. Additional Information: Large forged blades such as this in the shape of a spear point were well ... moreused into the middle of the 20th century as currency and during marriage ceremonies. They are known under several names: dihunga(for small examples) doa(for larger examples) Other names are: Linganda and Ngbele. During marriage ceremonies up to 60 doa might be exchanged for the bride. These were specially shaped to look like spear points but were too thin and long to serve as such. These unique currency forms were well worked and were often embellished with a number of parallel lines close to the edges. The surface of this currency shows some age. This may be an early or mid 20th century example. It comes from the Topoke people who live in the Equatorial region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. 2 Antique African Kissi Pennies/Currency Iron Forms Sierra Leone
Up for auction are two(2) antique African Kissi pennies/ currency iron forms. Sierra Leone, one full size, the other is broken in two. The Kissi of Western Guinea and Sierra Leone used these strangely shaped metal pieces as currency for more than a hundred years. Kissi and Toma peoples; Guinea. Sierra Leone, and Liberia, West Africa) Apparently, the shape came about at least in part because it was virtually impossible to"shave" or alter the amount of metal in them without the tampering becoming immediately obvious. Larger"denominations" were made by twisting several pieces together and securing with leather strips. If one of them became legitimately broken, its value could only be restored in a special ceremony conducted by a shaman. Therefore, it was said to have a"soul. In earlier times, marriages among the Gbande ... morewere confirmed with a kissi penny. Once part of the bride price had been paid, the groom placed a kissi penny on his bride's head and said"THIS IS MY WIFE. See them in Schaedler's EARTH AND ORE-25000 YEARS OF AFRICAN ART IN TERRA COTTA AND METAL. Each measures approximately 14' long. The broken penny measures one piece 5-1/2" long and the other is 8-1/2" long. Be sure to check my other auctions and thanks for looking. ANTIQUE AFRICAN CURRENCY TO BUY A WOMAN CONGO KATANGA TRIBAL SOLID COPPER MINING
PLEASE NOTE: ONLY SHIPPING TO THE USA AND ALL EUROPEAN COUNTRIES(Secure shipping to all other countries is too expensive- double) Antique African Katanga Cross Form of old currency to buy a wife. Animals and other forms of trade. Country: CONGO, Katanga mines Material: Solid Katanga copper(considered as the purest ore and red) Weight: 833 gram Size 224 x 220 mm = ca 8.6 inch across With small spot where the patina is removed to test the copper. All details: see photos. Very good condition During this specific African historical period Katanga crosses were made in various sizes and big ones are considered to be over 14 to 18 cm across. Rare(or better good) ones have a weight of over 0.5 kilogram. The currency was produced in Katanga by the Bangwa who mastered the secret and procedure in the first place to refine the copper from the minerals ... moreto make it so pure using extremely high temperatures in different ovens. De molten copper is then poured in soil. The form of payment went from buying animals to a woman(for marriage) This would require a big cross. Or a few. It is not very documented in history but during the colonisation of Congo by the Belgians the crosses disappeared. The fact is that the Belgians introduced“real” money. Small copper coins as we know them in our cultures. The crosses lost their value and they were“taken” confiscated” or traded and molten at factories because it was easy refined“ore” As pure colonialists all the famous copper mines in Katanga were under the governing of the Belgians.
