They were produced in large numbers in a wide range of designs, sizes, and weights. Originating before the colonial period, perhaps as the result of trade with the Portuguese Empire, Manillas continued to serve as money and decorative objects until the late 1940s and are still sometimes used as decoration. In popular culture, they are particularly associated with the Atlantic slave trade.

29 x 13 x 15 inches This stunning wooden trunk is from the Kuba area of the Congo. Africa. It was brought to the UK in the 30's by a family member ... morewho was working out there as an anthropologist. The trunk would have probably been used as a ceremonial trunk to keep treasured possessions and cloth in but this[as you can see by the pictures] comes with some very odd items. From research I have done about them. They seem to be Shaman's artifacts. Items which would be used in witchcraft, none of the items have been opened from their wrappings so that their content should be intact and preserved and how they would be intended for use by the Shaman. Some items have been swaddled/mummified in an early hessian type cloth. The trunk is large at 29inches in length x 15 deep x 13 wide and makes a beautiful feature and talking point. The condition of the box is good for its age. The wood shown in the box is from the right hand side of the lid and can be fixed back on easily, it has always been as it is since I have had the box. Inside of the box you can see the tool marks from the construction, with the use of very primitive tools. Part of the front clasp has broken off at some point but again the broken part is still with the box. Some nails have been replaced at some point in its history and some original remain as do the primitive hinges. The box is hand carved with circumpuncts and geometric patterns typical of the regions crafts. The circumpunct signifies the sun and was used a lot by tribal craftsmen[as well as the rest of the world] For overseas shipping please contact me with your postal code before buying. Postal charges vary considerably with larger items and I can then get an accurate quote for you. You might find it a lot cheaper!

ANTIQUE AFRICAN ART COILED COPPER IGBO MANILLA BRACELET CURRENCY NIGERIA
GJPaw Auctions is pleased to offer an Antique Coiled Copper Manilla or Coiled“Bracelet” Currency. This particular piece is from the Igbo people of Central Nigeria and is made of copper. Known as the“red gold” of Africa. It measures 8 inches in width by 3 inches in diameter(20.32 cm by 7.62 cm) To create some of these bracelets. The artisan poured molten metal directly into a cast in the ground called a puddle mold. As the metal cooled, it was wrapped into a circular shape and often even fitted directly to the wearer's body. The bracelet shows wear consistent with the mid-20th century, including an overall patina of oxidization which is natural with copper. A superb collector’s item, it would be a perfect compliment in any collection of currency, metal sculpture or colonial artifacts and comes with a specially made iron museum stand. It ... moreis guaranteed authentic. One of the more unusual types of African art is“currency. Currency appears in a wide variety of shapes and forms. Usually made of iron and copper, the metals most valued in this area of the world. African currency is not used like paper currency, although it does represents wealth and an abundant lifestyle. Among tribal cultures in Africa, currency could also be used for major purchases such as land or animals, or to signify a transfer of wealth at major events, such as birth, coming of age, marriage, or death. Representing stored family wealth. Ornaments were usually large and heavy and were worn by people of high status throughout Igboland. Most African currency forms were developed from traditional metal objects that were already in use such as weapons. Tools, bracelets and anklets. While some continued to be functional for work or decorative purposes, most evolved into"pure" currency, deliberately unusable except as objects recognized, prized, and accepted as payment. Aside from their intrinsic value. They were also valued for their artistry as can be seen in the extraordinary beauty of the example on offer. GJPaw Auctions has been in the

Huge Heavy African Tribal Manilla Money Currency Bronze Slave Trade Bracelet
Finely carved with beautiful tribal art. I am not sure if this is bronze. Copper or brass. It appears very old and was recently acquired from a south Florida estate. TUAREG Brass BRACELET CURRENCY.....Tribal African Antique Manilla
When I was a child in the 60's. I use to love to go to the Lagos market, in Nigeria, with my mother. This is one of our finds! It is very heavy and beautiful in design. I am sure it is brass. I have found many references when I searched under Scott Semans World Coins and African Bracelet Money and TUAREG BRACELET CURRENCY. I am not sure of it's age, but I know it is at least 50 plus years old. I have not found another with as much design on the cuff, so I assume this one is special! ec2.RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Fvo%7B%3Dd70f%2B%3Eec2-147039a0fa3-0xff-

Provenance: James E Adkins Estate Collection(Florida. USA) The most common form of metal currency in West Africa was the manilla. A rod with flared ends and bent into a"bracelet" form. The name manilla is said to derive from the Spanish for bracelet'manilla' or the Portuguese for'hand-ring' Most manillas used as currency in Nigeria and Ghana were in the form of copper or brass anklets and bracelets. Usually made from a copper alloy. Forms like these were recognized and used as currency for transactions from the end of the 15th to the mid-20th century. The smaller ones were manufactured in England or France and. Like trade beads, were used for trade, ... moreincluding the slave trade, with Africa and ended up there. Larger queen and king(like this one) manillas were more likely to have been forged in Africa and were believed to have been used by the nobility as a store of wealth and to settle transactions for significant purchases such as land. Slaves and brides. The metal content varies from copper to brass. But many were mixed with lead and even iron. There are in addition variations in size, form and quality. The Africans valued them by their ring when struck. The use of manilla currency in West Africa lasted until the second world war. Customer Service: 561-745-1905
ANTIQUE TO BUY A GIRL AFRICAN KATANGA CROSS CROIX BRONZE MONEY OLD CURRENCY
PLEASE NOTE: ONLY SHIPPING TO THE USA AND ALL EUROPEAN COUNTRIES(Secure shipping to all other countries is too expensive- double) Antique African Katanga Cross Form of old currency to buy a wife. Animals and other forms of trade. Country: CONGO, Katanga mines Material: Solid Katanga copper(considered as the purest ore and red) Weight: 833 gram Size 224 x 220 mm = ca 8.6 inch across With small spot where the patina is removed to test the copper. All details: see photos. Very good condition During this specific African historical period Katanga crosses were made in various sizes and big ones are considered to be over 14 to 18 cm across. Rare(or better good) ones have a weight of over 0.5 kilogram. The currency was produced in Katanga by the Bangwa who mastered the secret and procedure in the first place to refine the copper from the minerals ... moreto make it so pure using extremely high temperatures in different ovens. De molten copper is then poured in soil. The form of payment went from buying animals to a woman(for marriage) This would require a big cross. Or a few. It is not very documented in history but during the colonisation of Congo by the Belgians the crosses disappeared. The fact is that the Belgians introduced“real” money. Small copper coins as we know them in our cultures. The crosses lost their value and they were“taken” confiscated” or traded and molten at factories because it was easy refined“ore” As pure colonialists all the famous copper mines in Katanga were under the governing of the Belgians.

Bamun Collar Currency Bronze Cameroon African
Title, Bamun Collar Large Heavy Bronze Cameroon African Type of Object, Bronze Collar, Country of Origin, Cameroon, People, Bamun people, Materials, Bronze. Brass or other alloys, Approximate Age, Unknown 20th century Dimensions, 11.5 inches x 14 inches; 7 inches interior Diam, Overall Condition, Fair to good, Damage/Repair, Old repair on left side. Oxidation on the surface, Additional Information: Old repair on left side. Oxidation on the surface. This is an exceptionally large and heavy bronze(or brass) collar decorated with cast human figures on the lower part and with series of intricate patterns on the upper part in the form of of a crescent with opening. The origin of this dramatic collar is not known with precision. But its ornamentation related this artifact to works from Cameroon. The shape of cows head and detailing of the surface ... moreare from the Bamun. Such collars were probably cast for a king or a member of the royal court among the Bamun people. The brasscasters guild historically worked primarily for the monarchy. With smaller pieces being available to chiefs. Bamun castings were all made using the lost wax technique. Which produces one-of-a-kind pieces. A core of clay is covered with wax, which is then carved into the exact shape which the artist wants the finished piece to have. Additional wax"pipelines" are made for the wax to exit and gases to escape. The wax is then covered with a layer of fine clay, and with succeeding layers, each coarser than the previous one. The mold is then heated, which melts the wax and fires the clay into a solid mold. The empty space is filled by pouring in molten brass. After the piece cools, the clay mold is broken, revealing the metal piece ready for polishing. Recommended Reading: Tamara Northern. The Art of Cameroon, The Smithsonian Institution, 1984.
