It was brought to the UK in the 30's by a family member ... morewho was working out there as an anthropologist. The trunk would have probably been used as a ceremonial trunk to keep treasured possessions and cloth in but this[as you can see by the pictures] comes with some very odd items. From research I have done about them. They seem to be Shaman's artifacts. Items which would be used in witchcraft, none of the items have been opened from their wrappings so that their content should be intact and preserved and how they would be intended for use by the Shaman. Some items have been swaddled/mummified in an early hessian type cloth. The trunk is large at 29inches in length x 15 deep x 13 wide and makes a beautiful feature and talking point. The condition of the box is good for its age. The wood shown in the box is from the right hand side of the lid and can be fixed back on easily, it has always been as it is since I have had the box. Inside of the box you can see the tool marks from the construction, with the use of very primitive tools. Part of the front clasp has broken off at some point but again the broken part is still with the box. Some nails have been replaced at some point in its history and some original remain as do the primitive hinges. The box is hand carved with circumpuncts and geometric patterns typical of the regions crafts. The circumpunct signifies the sun and was used a lot by tribal craftsmen[as well as the rest of the world] For overseas shipping please contact me with your postal code before buying. Postal charges vary considerably with larger items and I can then get an accurate quote for you. You might find it a lot cheaper!

Old African Primitive Forged Iron Tool Large 36" Currency Nigeria Benue This auction is for this old piece of African Iron Currency. It is a tribal item used by African tribes for trade especially the Nigerian Benue. It measures 36 inches long. The widest part is about 5 1/2 inches across. The long handle is about 1 1/2 inches by 1 1/2 inches at the top. The handle has an open back and sometimes this was for inserting a wooden extension. This is a hand forged piece with an interesting primitive design. It is in very good condition with normal aging and use marks for something of this age and material. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. During marriage ceremonies up to 60 doa might be exchanged for the bride. These were specially shaped to look like spearpoints but were too thin and long to serve as such. Beautiful King's Manilla Currency bracelet. I am uncertain of the region or tribe here. But the patterning looks like it is indigenous to the Ivory Coast, likely Baule. The material is an indeterminate metal alloy, it looks like a composite of nickel silver and brass or bronze, cast using the lost wax method. It weighs 2 pounds 2.3 oz or 970 grams. Beautiful antique/vintage Tuareg currency bracelet. The material is indeterminate. It looks like nickel silver, I do see a small hint of brass or yellow coloration when it is on a white surface. It weighs 576 grams. In its time, this bracelet would have been used to store and transfer wealth, and this would have been a high value piece comparative to the many indescript manillas in circulation. The Tuareg were nomads who travelled all over the Sahara desert and are herders and travelers. Elegant forms of brass and silver were worn as jewelry and were the principal method for exchanging goods and services. This is a very scarce and unique old tribal metal tubular brass ornament or bead used in extensive African trading. It is in decent shape for it's age showing a fair amouint of discoloration and wear and a very high quality manufacture. This is made using the lost wax casting technique which has been a method of metal fabrication in West Africa for centuries and generations. These type of beads were used as a type of currency and one can sometimes find these which have been cut in half to make change which I find very interesting.
