Title, Zulu Beaded Leather Married Women Skirt. South Africa, Type of Object, Beaded skirt, Country of Origin, South Africa, People, Zulu, Materials, ... moreleather. Beads, Approximate Age, Early to mid 20th century       Dimensions, 31 inches W. x 11 inches H. Overall Condition, Fair to good, Damage/Repair, wear. Dust, We do not recommend laundering textiles. And do not accept returns of textiles which have been laundered in any manner. Even dry cleaning is too much for some of these antique textiles. For some of them, a very gentle HAND washing(NEVER MACHINE, on any setting) in cool water with a very gentle detergent works, but even then, dyes may not be colorfast, and fabric may be less strong than it appears. Additional Information: An extraordinary and rare piece! This is a Zulu beaded leather worn by married women. This skirt is her ceremonial attire. The pleated skirt is made of leather and decorated with cotton strips(layers)and beads. Zulu beadwork has been valued as currency. Decoration, and also as a marker of identity. Disingwayo the uncle of Shaka and Shaka himself, controlled the bead trade and monopolized not only the beads themselves but also the colors and designs available to groups within Shaka’s control. Beadwork became a status symbol and an important item of personal expression as well. Stylistic variations of beadwork such as pattern, color and color sequence indicate area or group affiliation. Recently beadwork has become a symbol of political identity as well, with color and pattern indicating political affiliation. Instead of beads being worn only by the conservative, traditional members of the community, wearing beadwork is increasingly being seen as reclaiming a cultural identity. See a similar example in"ZULU TREASURES"AMAGUGU KAZULU; see also Hlengiwe Dube. ZULU BEADWORK. TALKING WITH BEADS, AfricaDirect, Inc. Denver, 2009. THESE GOLD WEIGHTS AND SCALE PAN ARE PIECES OF ETHNOGRAPHIC ART. CRAFTED IN THE LOST WAX PROCESS AND COLLECTED MID-CENTURY BY A PEACE CORPS EMPLOYEE. ... moreTHE LARGE DISC IS THE PAN FOR THE BALANCE SCALE USED TO WEIGH GOLD DUST. DOMESTIC SHIPPING IS INCLUDED IN THE SALE PRICE. I WILL COMBINE ITEMS AND REFUND ANY EXCESS SHIPPING FEES FOR INTERNATIONAL BUYERS. Akan goldweights were used as a measuring system by the Akan people of West Africa. Particularly for weighing gold dust which was currency until replaced by paper money and coins. They are referred to locally as mrammou and the weights are made of brass and not gold. Used to weigh gold and merchandise. At first glance the goldweights look like miniature models of everyday objects. Based on the Islamic ounce. Each weight had a known measurement. This provided merchants with secure and fair-trade arrangements with one another. The status of a man increased significantly if he owned a complete set of weights. Complete small sets of weights were gifts to newly wedded men. This insured that he would be able to enter the merchant trade respectably and successfully. Beyond their practical application, the weights are miniature representations of West African culture items such as adinkra symbols. Plants, animals and people. Meanings behind the weights Scholars use the weights. And the oral traditions behind the weights, to understand aspects of Akan culture that otherwise may have been lost. The weights represent stories. Riddles, and code of conducts that helped guide Akan peoples in the ways they live their lives. Central to Akan culture is the concern for equality and justice; it is rich in oral histories on this subject. Many weights symbolize significant and well-known stories. The weights were part of the Akan’s cultural reinforcement, expressing personal behavior codes, beliefs, and values in a medium that was assembled by many people. From Wikipedia. African Tribal Currency Bracelet Ethnographic Art, Bronze Jewelry Tuareg Mali
This extraordinary Tuareg bracelet made from bronze using the old lost wax casting of copper and tin alloy is thought to be from the 20th century conservatively. The condition is exceptional. No damage or repair shows it was clearly a favored old piece remaining unchanged from the time of it's acquisition in the 1940's. Pieces such as this served as currency but also as a show of wealth. The strong yet simple design is classic and admirable. This is certainly worthy of being noted as a collectors piece. The measurements are 3 3/4" across and 1" in height or width. The inside measurement is 2.5" and 3.5" from front to back. There are 6 photos. To see them all click on the blue arrow at the end of the row of small photos. All photos can be enlarged by clicking on the photo you want a better look at then mousing around ... moreon that photo. Each end has a 10 sided and etched shape that is comprised of different sizes of triangles.

43 mm tribal brass metal trade bead old African currency ornament Nigeria
43 mm tribal brass metal trade bead old African currency ornament Nigeria Make: African Material: metal Size: about 43 mm long x 15 mm wide# of beads: 1 This is a very scarce and unique old tribal metal tubular brass ornament or bead used in extensive African trading. It is in decent shape for it's age showing just a bit of discoloration and wear and a very high quality manufacture. This is made using the lost wax casting technique which has been a method of metal fabrication in West Africa for centuries and generations. These type of beads were used as a type of currency and one can sometimes find these which have been cut in half to make change which I find very interesting. This is a fine example of these scarce and unique old tribal currency beads for artist. Designer, or collector and not to be missed! ABOUT KUBA CLOTH Using the leaf of the raffia tree. The Kuba people of the Congo first hand cut, and then weave the strips of leaf to make pieces of fabric, often called raffia cloth. There are several different sub groups of the Kuba people and each group has different and unique ways to make the fabric– contributing to the wide variety of styles you’ll find of this fabric. Some make it thicker, longer, shorter, or with different patches and/or colors. Each patch is symbolic and many times a piece has multiple meanings. When Kuba cloth originated it is thought that there were probably no patches used, but because the cloth is brittle it tears easily and it’s likely that the patches were used to repair the frequent tears. Later each patch developed a meaning and different patterns were uniquely arranged to tell a story. The process of making ... moreKuba cloth is extremely time-consuming and may take several days to complete a simple piece. Both men and women contribute in equally important ways to the production of this fabric. First. The men first gather the leaves of the raffia tree and dye it using mud, indigo, or substances from the camwood tree. They then rub the raffia fibers in their hands to soften it and make it easier for weaving. After they’ve completed the base cloth the women set about embroidering it. They do this by pulling a few threads of the raffia fibers, inserting them into a needle running the needle through the cloth until the fibers show up on the opposite end. They use a knife and cut off the tops of the fibers, leaving only a little bit showing. Doing this hundreds and hundreds of times leads to the formation of a design. Kuba Cloth designs are seldom planned out ahead of time, and most of the embroidery is done by memory. African Tribal Currency Bracelet Ethnic Art, Bronze Jewelry AWESOM! large SALE!!
An extraordinary Baule(Ivory Coast) bracelet or anklet made from bronze using the old lost wax casting of copper and tin alloy is thought to be from the 19th century conservatively. The condition is good for something this old. Very little damage. One dent or repair shows it was clearly a favored old piece. Pieces such as this served as currency but also as a show of wealth. The minute intricate design detail of this piece is most remarkable! This is certainly worthy of being noted as a collectors piece. The measurements are 6" across and 3" in height and the opening is 2.5" at one end and the same at the other end.

African tribal heavy Yoruba bronze currency jewelry, ethnographic art, decor
This type of copper or bronze alloy jewelry and currency were first cast in an elongated form and then beaten into the desired shape. After being cast in the lost wax technique designs were worked onto the surface with a steel chisel. The main function of these items was decoration however they retained value by the nature of the material they were made of as copper alloy could be recast into other forms. They thus were valued as currency as well as decoration. This neck ring is thought to be well over 200 years old. It measures 8" across with an opening of 2" and a thickness of 1"height) The oxidation adds to the charm and statement of age. Very heavy.
