The Ashanti people of Ghana used gold dust as a medium of exchange. The weights were used as counter balance standards in a simple double pan scale. Mali, Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, People, ... moreLobi, Materials, Iron, Approximate Age, Early to Mid 20th century, Dimensions, 13.25 inches long, Overall Condition, Good. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, Rusted patina Lobi Iron Snake Currency. African Metalwork Additional Information: A hand-forged iron snake coming from the Lobi. The Lobi live as farmers and spend much time in their fields. They have produced numerous iron. Brass, and bronze figures currencies and and jewelry depicting the snake. This can be understood as the snake is very often associated to the Lobi mythical beings. Also, the Lobi encounter numerous serpents, including the Bites viper and the Boa Constrictor. To protect them from the dangers that the snakes represent forged iron snakes were either worn on their person or placed on personal altars. In addition to examples such as this serpent that probably served as an altar object, women will attach smaller sinuous, flat-modeled images of serpents to the sides of their legs just above the ankle reaching up the leg close to the knee. Generally placed on the outer side of the leg they may often be on the inside of the leg or both sides as well. The bodies will be displayed with a sinuous set of curves as though the snakes were moving through the grass. In many cases, the heads are simply defined as a triangular shape with the mouth possibly noted with a thin line beaten into the side of the face. The tails are depicted by a tapering form and the body has the usual undulated snake form. Among the Lob

Beautiful. Very old, Baule Tribe Currency Bracelet. The material looks to be a bronze-copper alloy. In its time, this bracelet would have been used to ... morestore and transfer wealth, and this would have been a high value piece comparative to the many indescript manillas in circulation. It is fun to envision what multitude of goods were exchanged for this piece over the years- this may have been owned by royalty or used as bride price. It is a very nice piece. From a sculptural vantage point, this is a very displayable piece, and large in scale- 3-1/4" diameter, 3-1/2" tall. This bracelet was crafted using a lost wax technique, and does contain copper which would have been higher in value as currency, copper was considered"red gold" in Africa. This piece is in excellent condition but does have a rubbed down and smooth surface, commensurate to age and wear. 1pound 3.3oz. Please see(don't miss! my other auctions- I am posting some very choice. Very incredible pieces of African and Yemeni jewelry from the affluent estate of a deceased husband and wife whom were both Art History professors here at the University of Iowa. He was in the field of the Ancient Near East, and she was both an Art History and Archaeology professor. They lived in Tunisia and other areas Northern Africa mid-century, travelled the Near East, and collected fine pieces of artisanal and ancient jewelry. I can provide additional details regarding the estate via eBay message if you are interested. This is a great opportunity to procure items that were selected and collected by two very knowledgable art historians half a century ago in the course of their careers in the field and life abroad.

Gold Weights: The Gold weights or Mbramoo of the Akan are stylized miniature sculptures traditionally used to weigh bags of gold dust for use as currency. ... moreMade of bronze or brass the weights are made using the traditional lost wax casting technique(I highly recommend viewing this for a precursory view of the technique) The weights themselves often became status symbols with higher nobility indicted with not only owning more weights but the degree of casting in the weights and the accompanying accouterments like spoons and decorative chests. Each weight was made to be equivalent to a Uquiya or Islamic ounce(roughly 27.3 grams) With the weights either being filed down or adorned with beads to achieve the perfect weight. Though long since out of use for actual gold measurements, the weights have continued to be made and serve now more as collectible handmade sculptures. This particular piece is a Rooster or Chicken measuring about 1.75 in long by 2 in tall, with a lovely filigree and patina making it wonderful for any collector! Motifs: Akan gold weights were often used not only for simple measurements but to strike up conversation during business transactions by each conveying a unique story or idea through their designs and representations. These design motifs usually fall into three trends; courtly figures. Adinkra symbols or representational animals. The figures representing Ashanti nobility tend to be allegories. Myths and fables of the Ashanti's origins. The Adinkra symbols are much flatter, rectangular designs based upon the Ashanti Adrinkra system of writing where philosophical concepts and aphorisms are represented with stylized patterns and designs(the Adrinkra is not a phonetic system of writing and holds no capability for writing nouns, verbs, etc but instead conveys transcendent thoughts on the nature of existence) The animal representations often are attempts to convey proverbs relating to the individual animals. 2 MBOLE BRONZE CURRENCY - OLD AFRICAN MONEY - CONGO
2 Mbole Currency- DROC Metal was highly valued throughout Africa. And, as with most African metal items, pieces that were originally created for an entirely different purpose became viewed as wealth over time and then used as currency in trade for a wide variety of items- the metal could always be smelted down to reform into a more desirable or needed object. Most African tribes used a wide array of metal rings in varying sizes and shapes for adornment and primitive money. While records show that copper rings functioned as currency in Takrur in 1068 A.D. it is commonly believed that copper ingots were mined in the Katanga region as early as the 9th century, and the first appearance of heavy copper bracelets was recorded during the 8th century. Bracelets, often referred to as'ring money' served as a medium of early exchange in addition ... moreto ornamentation- a convenient way to transport wealth was to wear it as a show of prestige and power. The two main techniques for producing the rings or bracelets were drawing wire to forge or form the shape, and casting, and the pieces could easily be melted down(smelted) at another location and then reformed as desired. The use of imported copper and brass bangles or'manilas' dates back to 1439, when the Portuguese ordered their production from Venice for trade in Africa. The manilas continually grew smaller over time, and their metal content changed from solid copper to brass, and then to highly leaded brass until the importation and use of manilas was prohibited during the early 1900's when the British government sought to establish their own currency and therefore forbade the use of any other. The'native' currency(or primitive money) that was buried as a result of that British decree was not excavated until much later, and is now surfacing into the current market as art. This fine pair measure 4.5 inches tall and 4.5 inches wide.

Title, Mumuye Forged Iron Currency Nigeria African Type of Object, Weapon/Currency, Country of Origin, Northern Nigeria, People, Mumuye, Materials, Iron, Approximate Age, Unknown Dimensions, 16 inches H. x 1.25 inches, Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, Rusted surface/ some oxidation, Additional Information: A forged iron currency from the Mumuye people who live in Nigeria and along the border with Cameroon. This currency has a diamond-like design in the middle and narrow bars in both ends. These curious currency pieces are thought to originate in a remote part of Northern Nigeria. A confluence of obscure. Small cultures have lived in this area since the Fulani expansions of the 17th and 18th centuries. Among them are the Mumuye, Chamba, Jukun, Montol, Fulani, and Goemai. Though these metal currencies can be traced to the area, it is ... morenot known for sure who produced them. Despite the fact that they were used by the Mumuye as currency on special occasions, most likely in bridal negotiations. The arts of Nigeria are among the strangest and most fascinating in all of Africa. The high degree of abstraction used on most metal objects has made them popular with collectors. Though most texts mention the peoples living in the area, there is little firm scholarship about them. 78531* All content. AFRICAN CURRENCY 2 BRONZE PIECES - DROC
African Currency- DROC Metal was highly valued throughout Africa. The manila’s continually grew smaller over time, and their metal content changed from solid copper to brass, and then to highly leaded brass until the importation and use of manilas was prohibited during the early 1900's when the British government sought to establish their own currency and therefore forbade the use of any other. The'native' currency(or primitive money) that was buried as a result of that British decree was not excavated until much later, and is now surfacing into the current market as art. This two fine examples measures 3.75 inches tall and 3.75 inches wide and 3.25 inches tall and 4.0 inches wide.
