African tribal furniture ethnographic art sculpture hand carved chair Angolan
Hand-carved wood chair made in traditional slotted style. The seat portion slots into the carved back portion. The back depicts two charming village scenes. The top portion depicts a man and woman dancing around a fire while the lower portion shows women grinding grain in traditional fashion. The chair was purchased directly from Angolan carver Valentin. Who is from Dundo, Angola, the traditional home of these chairs. A bill of sale hand written and signed by him accompanies the chair. There is a crack in the upper portion, the results od the wood drying over the past forty years.

The clay was then baked, which caused the wax to melt and run out. The clay was then used as a mould for the bronze: both were encased in an aubergine-shaped clay mould with the original clay mould at the top and the bronze sitting on the bottom, and then put into the furnace. When the bronze was molten, the smith turned the mould upside down, so the bronze ran into the clay mould below. The mould was later destroyed to reach the bronze weight. The earliest known period of weight production began in approximately 1400, however during the 18th and 19th centuries manufacture increased as the Ashanti's economy grew, mainly due to war, conquest, booty and trade. This explains why the majority of the Hunterian Museum's collection of Ashanti weights are from this period, rather than the earlier, post-contact periods. In 1894, the colonial administration in the region banned the use of gold dust as currency, and in 1896 outlawed the use and making of weights.

I purchased the chair in Liberia in 1982. I fell in love with the design and the look of this chair and bought it after protracted negotiations. In spite of the repair and anticipated difficulties with exporting and shipping it(weight and size! out of Africa. It looked well used then, the fact that the drying cracks were already repaired and stable(it has not cracked any further since) lead me to think that it was made at least 20 years earlier(natural drying time for the tropical woods is 20-25 years) The chair is remarkably comfortable and although I tried to"save it" as much as I could and did not sit in it every day, my guests did use it quite often, whenever there was a gathering at my house. WOW. What can I say about the chair. Hmmmm. First, How I got it and where it came from. I found this Chair at a small out of the way Flea market in central Florida. The vendor was an elderly gentlman who said his wife wanted it out of the house after 40 years or so. He got it from his parents when they passed. They had brought the chair back from Africa in the 1930's or so. He did not remermber where in Africa,except he thought they were in South Africa.I have had it for display mostly at a store I was involved with and then had it in my house for a couple years and bring it to the occassional markets I go to. People are always amazed and say the chair should be in a museum or something. I have had a lot of opinions about where it came from and how old it is. The closest chair I have found anywhere was a guy from Miami that had two similar ... morechairs in that the bird figures were almost identical. His chairs were from Africa and dated to the 1850's. We thought my chair might be a little older because of the quality of the figures and carving. I like to get feedback from anyone who might know more about this type of relic. Thr tree it was carved from had to be 200 + years old as you can see from the growth rings on the chair. So the wood itself dates back to the 15 th/ 16th century. Here is an amazing Hand Carved African Tribal Chair. This piece is unique. With a carving of a African Figure holding the chair on his back. I don't know very much about this chair.And cannot find much out there even similar. Maybe it is a Chiefs Chair/Throne? Fertility Chair? Voodoo? I really don't know.But I know it is one of a kind,and hard to find a similar example. I had an antiques dealer look at it.And was told it has ageconsistant from being from the 1950's/1960's. Hand Carved African Giraffe 2pc Wood Chair Handmade Unique Carving
Attractive Hand Carved African Giraffe 2pc Wood Chair. Great Handmade piece with incredibly detailed and beautiful giraffe carvings on both the back and seat. The 2 pieces fit together well and create a nice lounge or Adirondack type chair. The back piece measures about 35" x 12" and the seat piece measures 19" x 12" with a 8" x 12" seat. While there are a few minor nicks on the chair(see pictures) It doesn't take away from its beauty and functionality. Very good condition and a real unique eye-catching piece. Heavy wood! We inherited the chair from an African arts dealer who imported chairs and masks from Angola. The chair itself, although it is slightly imbalanced(one leg is shorter than another) is exceptionally sturdy and can be sat upon. The Chokwe are an ethnic group of Central Africa, many of whom now reside in Angola, Zambia, DRC, and Namibia. Chokwe sculptors were the most famous of the region. During the 17 th century many Chokwe chiefs were introduced to chairs imported by Portuguese officials and adopted the foreign style for their thrones. Adding to it a unique Chokwe decorative style. African art walking stick 55 1/2" tall, Carved Lion on top, Man in a chair
This is a wooden walking stick. Carved with an African art theme. Just below the top carving, I believe it is a lion, the face looks like a monkey but from the side looks like a lion) is where you hold the stick at. Below that there is a carving of a man holding a stick sitting in a chair. Beneath that there is another carving I think it's a bird of some sort. Not real sure it has big eyes. Kind of looks like a swan head from the side or some sort with a big bill. The bottom has some hob nobs on it. It is mostly brown but has some black in it from the type of wood. It does come apart into 3 pieces. Just screws together. The bottom piece is two pieces made to fit together. They are held together by some dowels of some sort. This is a very hard wood. I have looked it over very close and do not see any cracks. There is some wear on the hand ... morearea. This was a gift from a friend not sure where he got it. African Carved Wooden Chair from South Africa Beautiful Bird Carving Chief Birth
This is a unique African hand carved chair. I've heard these called chief chairs. Lazy chairs, birthing chairs, etc. It is made out of a heavy, hard wood and beautifully carved with patterns and an African bird of some sort on the back. It is also signed with chop marks of the artist. This comes apart and lays flat for transport or storage. It is 19" tall by 7" wide by 18" deep when put together.
