African tribal sculpture bronze ethnographic art, zoomorphic medicine container
This truly spectacular bronze work of art is from the Lobi of Burkina Faso. The workmanship of this cast treasure is a wonderful example of the ability of these tribal people to do amazing objects that reflect both their talent and their belief system. The container on the back of the animal(don't know exactly what animal) was most likely used for medicine. The animal on the lid was intended to protect the contents and the larger animal was likely to have brought the medicine from the ancestors or the spirit world. This piece is very unusual and in perfect condition. Thought to date back earlier than the 19th century it is a true collectors item. It measures 8 3/4" high and 3.5" from side to side and 11" in length. Lid fits securely. RARE!

Open eyes, head cast wearing a handband-like and long earrings, a reminiscent of Fulani or Songhai women fashion. The back and the front show some oxidation. This mask does indicate the skill of the blacksmith in casting a mask out of a medium much more difficult to work than wood. There have been a number of metal mask-like sculptures from the Bamana of Mali. There is long tradition of figurative iron. Bronze and brass casting in the Western Sudan reaching back to the period of the great ... moreEmpire of Mali as early as the 12 th century. The age of this interestingly brass mask is undetermined but it does reflect an earlier period of bronze or brass casting. The facial features on this mask are similar to those found on wood sculptures from the Bamana. These masks are forged by blacksmiths working them into shapes that could be worn. Simply carried, or kept in a ritual location. Today there is no active tradition of these masks being used. In fact as little is known aboutcast metal masks among the Baule, Bamana, Dogon, Senufo or any other Western Sudanic groups it would be conjecture to assert more than this at this time. Pendant is made in the lost wax casting technique, each piece unique and made individually. Pendant is strung with carnelian beads which have a band of white Chalcedoney I think, or maybe etched, and old African bronze beads. The book"Africa Adorned" by Angela Fisher. Very interesting assortment of tribal art acquired recently at an antiques auction. Selling as a job lot of three items. From my very limited research. I think I have on offer a bronze ogboni which I am led to understand would sit atop a staff. Additionally, we have a ibedji. I am not sure of the material.it is heavy and somewhat crumbly. Finally, we have a pretty bronze? bust. Unfortunately, I have found that this is too specialised a field for customers of my Kentish shop and so I've listed them with no reserve. This antique statue is primitive cast bronze and is very old and probably dates to the late 1800s. The statue itself(not including the base) stands approx. 5" in height by 3 1/2" in length. The statue is mounted on a black wood base with French description as pictured. When this figure was mounted a nail pierced the inside of the left front horse's leg. This came from a private estate collection of a gentleman that collected ancient artifacts from all over the world. Please view photos to further aid in description. Here is a vintage lost wax brass or bronze horse rider on wheels. Ornate piece. In great condition. Pictures don't do it justice. It measures just under 4 1/2" tall. 3 1/2" wide and 3 1/2" front to back. The axles are iron. I don't know if it was meant as a toy or not. Dogan? This lost wax cast of a copper alloy mask(bronze or brass) comes from the Baule people of the Ivory Coast in west Africa. Though masks are not normally used by the greater number of Akan peoples including the Asante or Fante. They are often found attached to various chiefly regalia prominent on sword sheaths or chiefly stools. They are said to represent the heads of defeated enemies and are shown with some evidence of local scarification which is rare among the Akan but often shown ... moreon terracotta sculptures. Here is a really interesting old bronze figure on a wood base. It features an African American male. Perhaps a slave, with his hands outstretched above his head. The inside of the hands are flattened as it appears that he once held something- perhaps supporting a bowl or ashtray at one time. Nicely detailed with a rich dark patina with some verdi gris greening in the folds of the design. There is a metal fracture visible at the back of the bent knee. Measures 6 1/2" high.
