This square-shaped goldweight together with the triangle are some of the basic shapes explored during the post-Islamic period of Akan goldweights. The use of gold was limited in the past on the African continent. Due to the restrictions of Islam. Gold dust was used as exchange up until the time that Europeans introduced their currency; the gold trader's equipment included goldweights, scales, tiny boxes as well as spoons for the gold dust. Akan goldweights were calibrated and would correspond to a certain weight of the gold dust or gold metal that was being weighed. Calibration was possible in this case by the insertion of copper insets in the holes of the weight. It spent some time in an antique store as you can see by the tag. The pot itself is 8" long, 4" wide, add another 7" for the leather tassels. Lots of marks and such from manufacture but no damage. I would guess this is mid-century. The leather is thin which is normal for leather from wild game. Possibly brain tanned, most likely made for export but with some age. For Auction Horse and Rider Bronze Statue- A. Style and motif suggest this was produced by the Tikar tribe of Cameroun. Nigeria's neighbor to the east, in West Africa. The Horse is free standing. The rider can be removed from the horse and they fit back together. The rider by itself is not free standing. It is a cast depicting a Muslim rider. Whose attire suggests to be of respectable social statue, but not necessarily a warrior. The horse is about 16 1/2" long. With the rider. It is about 15" tall. Heavy- weighs about 17 pounds. Good Condition- This appears to have a repair on one of the rear ankles of the horse. Also appears that the bronze casting did not completely cover the nose of the horse. The political systems that were monarchial, were well established before the fourteenth century. The Rulers of Benin and Yoruba had close ties, and by the fifteenth century Benin became and important power in the region. With the backing of the monarchy selected artists of Benin developed a special style of sculpture vastly different from the rest of the region. They produced many fine bronze and or brass heads. It stands on a smooth black marble base. It is signed by the artist Barye. The Art of Lost Wax Lost wax casting has been around for thousands of years. Yet few people understand how the process actually works. Although ... moremechanization has facilitated the lost wax process of bronze casting. The procedure is basically the same as that used by the Chinese when they first developed the process in the 2nd millennium BC. Do use wood and other mediums. Here the finished original clay is now complete. The sculptor will take it to the foundry now, get a bid then begin the first stages of the lost wax process. The first step can be shocking for some as they begin to decide how this original will be cut up. In order to prepare the original clay sculpture for molding. It will be dissected by cutting the clay with wire and by cutting the armature with a saw. The armature is what helped support the clay in place while the artist was creating it. Gan Bronze Arm Bangle with Serpents and Crocodiles-AFRICA An impressively large Gan bronze arm cuff. The surface of the bangle is covered in work of extreme detail; the front of the bangle is superbly adorned with serpents and crocodiles. Three large serpent heads extend from either side of the bangle. A crocodile on either side flanks them, each is depicted in an opposing direction, their long bodies are in full extension. The surface of the bangle is decorated with a fine lattice pattern. Running wave friezes as well as linear designs complete the surface decoration. The enamel gives it this cyan patina and is one the tops and sides of each segment as well as the clasp.
