Signed"Barye. Get one for the animal lover in your life. Antoine-Louis Barye(September 24. 1796-June 25, 1875) was a French sculptor most famous for his work as an animalier, a sculptor of animals. Born in Paris, Barye began his career as a goldsmith, like many sculptors of the Romantic Period. After studying under sculptor Francois-Joseph Bosio and painter Baron Antoine-Jean Gros he was in 1818 admitted to the école des Beaux Arts. But it was not until 1823, while working for Fauconnier, the goldsmith, that he discovered his true predilection from watching the animals in the Jardin des Plantes, making vigorous studies of them in pencil drawings comparable to those of Delacroix, then modelling them in sculpture on a large or small scale. The mass of admirable work left by Barye entitles him to be regarded as one of the great animal life artists of the French school, and the refiner of a class of art which has attracted such men as Emmanuel Frémiet, Peter, Cain, and Gardet. Do use wood and other mediums. Here the finished original clay is now complete. The sculptor will take it to the foundry now, get a bid then begin the first stages of the lost wax process. The first step can be shocking for some as they begin to decide how this original will be cut up. In order to prepare the original clay sculpture for molding. It will be dissected by cutting the clay with wire and by cutting the armature with a saw. The armature is what helped support the clay in place while the artist was creating it. Note the registration marks which later in the process will serve to realign the parts. Shown here are the sections of the original clay sculpture after having been dissected. Superb African Old Akan Geometric Bronze Goldweight Ghana
Old Akan Geometric Bronz e Goldweight Ghana Africa An old Akan geometric goldweight from the Gold Coast- Ghana. This square-shaped goldweight together with the triangle are some of the basic shapes explored during the post-Islamic period of Akan goldweights. The use of gold was limited in the past on the African continent. Due to the restrictions of Islam. Gold dust was used as exchange up until the time that Europeans introduced their currency; the gold trader's equipment included goldweights, scales, tiny boxes as well as spoons for the gold dust. Akan goldweights were calibrated and would correspond to a certain weight of the gold dust or gold metal that was being weighed. Calibration was possible in this case by the insertion of copper insets in the holes of the weight. These are not decorative but are rather intentional in order ... moreto adjust the ponderal value of the gold being weighed. Akan culture has two main periods: Early and Late; the Early period is thought to have been from about 1400–1729 AD. With some overlap of the Late period that lasted from approximately 1700-1900 AD. There is a clear stylistic distinction between the Early and Late periods; geometric weights being the oldest form of goldweight. Dating from 1400 AD onwards while figurative weights, representing people, animals, objects etc. first appear around 1600 AD. Excellent patina with traces of vert-de-gris; cast using the lost-wax process. NOTE: Similar examples appear in André Blandin's- Afrique de l'ouest- Bronzes et autres alliages(1988) and in African Goldweights. African Bronze, Brass Medicine Pot, Nigeria, Vintage- Ashanti Tribal Primitive
African Bronze. Brass Medicine Pot, Nigeria, Vintage- Ashanti Tribal Primitive This is an interesting piece. Tough to research. I've looked at these attributed to Ethiopia, also. It spent some time in an antique store as you can see by the tag. The pot itself is 8" long, 4" wide, add another 7" for the leather tassels. Lots of marks and such from manufacture but no damage. I would guess this is mid-century. The leather is thin which is normal for leather from wild game. Possibly brain tanned, most likely made for export but with some age. Superb African Bronze Rooster Benin, Nigeria 13" h
Superb Benin Bronze figure of a rooster measures Approx: 13" h by 8"w The Benin Empire dates back to prehistoric times. The political systems that were monarchial, were well established before the fourteenth century. The Rulers of Benin and Yoruba had close ties, and by the fifteenth century Benin became and important power in the region. With the backing of the monarchy selected artists of Benin developed a special style of sculpture vastly different from the rest of the region. They produced many fine bronze and or brass heads. Figurines, brass plaques, and large rectangular metal pictures, which were used to decorate the Oba's palace. The Benin Empire soon became the largest of the political systems of the Guinea Coast and toward the middle of the sixteenth century; the Oba ruled an area. Which spread from modern Lagos to ... morethe Niger Delta. Back in the late 19th century when the British forces invaded Benin City. They were overwhelmed to find artistic sculptures cast in brass/bronze. They could not believe the technological sophistication and exquisite beauty and quality of these objects. What they saw was a total contradiction to what many westerners believed or assumed about Africa. The above was too much for the British forces to bear and they swiftly concocted excuses- The sculptures must have been made by the Portuguese. The Egyptians, or the lost tribes of Israel" The so-called"Portuguese. Superb Bronze Iv Coast: Tribal used African Yohure bird mask. 12" h
Superb Tribal used African bird Bronze mask from the Yohure. Iv. Coast. This type of mask has protecting function. Height: 12" by 8"w The Yohure are noted for their beautifully crafted masks that combine human and animal features. They have elaborate hairstyles which often include horns. Elongated faces with a high forehead, arched eyebrows and a low protruding mouth. The outline of the mask is characteristically surrounded by a serrated edge. The function of each type of mask is not rigidly fixed. The 20.000 Yohure inhabit the central region of the Côte d’Ivoire, the territory between the White and Red Bandama Rivers, to the east of the city of Bouafle. The Yohure are geographically and linguistically situated between the Baule, an Akan language group to the east, and the Guro and Gban(Gagu) southern Mande-speaking peoples ... moreto the west. Depending upon their proximity to their neighbors, the inhabitants of Yohure villages are either entirely Baule or Mande speaking. Villages are generally associated with one clan. They are governed by a leader assisted by a council of elders who represent each family holding. Each family lineage traces his roots to a particular ancestor. Not only their language, but also the culture, religion and art are influenced by their powerful neighbors, the Baule and Guro. The Yohure possess a strong sense of identity and have evolved a refined art. The Yohure decorate different everyday objects with figurative representations, but first of all their beautiful masks reveal their artistic abilities. The masks of the Yohure represent human faces often supplemented by animal attributes. They have an elongated face with a protruding mouth and pierced semi-circular eyes set under a high forehead. An elaborate plaited coiffure parted on each side. Often with horns at the end, completes the image, while the outline of the mask is characteristically surrounded by a serrated edge. thanks

The lion's paws grip the ground, the tension spreads like a current from his paws to all the tendons in his body. His mouth is open wide in what can only be a ferocious roar meant to intimidate and warn the prey that its end is near. This piece was cast using the lost wax method. It stands on a smooth black marble base. It is signed by the artist Barye. The Art of Lost Wax Lost wax casting has been around for thousands of years. Yet few people understand how the process actually works. Although ... moremechanization has facilitated the lost wax process of bronze casting. The procedure is basically the same as that used by the Chinese when they first developed the process in the 2nd millennium BC. The Rubber Mold First the artist creates an original sculpture out of any number of media. Including stone, wax, clay, wood and pottery. This image is coated with a silicone rubber molding material that makes two rubber mold halves(each rubber mold has a front and a back piece) A fiberglass outer shell is added to the back of each mold so it retains its shape and rigidity during subsequent uses. These molds are the only components that are ever re-used in the casting process. All other components are re-created for each casting. The Wax Positive Once the molds are done. The insides are coated with layers of wax. The halves are then bound together and wax poured inside to complete the wax image being created. Once the wax has cooled. The mold is peeled away, yielding a wax image(the wax positive" duplicating the original sculpture. This image must then be"touched-up" to remove any seam lines. Heavily decorated and in excellent condition this is a jewel! The lid fits! This is an unusual piece with an amazing amount of detail. Thought to be and appraised at 120 years old. Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Lost wax casting was a later development than the open mold of sand casting. Many designs in lost wax showed Persian or Coptic influence. By the 19th century bronze objects were used to purchase food and palm wine. To compensate diviners. To satisfy court claims, to contract for a wife and to be buried with. The form, weight, and composition of bronze money clearly mattered to participants in any transaction. The sheer value verifies their ... morewide spread use. A long-lived monetary function of bronze pieces was their use for wealth storage and display. The simpler but more laborious process of drawing wire was used in Central Africa. Casting was probably the primary method used in west Africa through Sudan. This Baule bronze gold or gold dust container from Cote d'Ivoire measures 7" wide across the crocodile that serves as the base and 9" high and 16.5" around on outside center. This container has a wonderful patina! One of many fine examples of the artistry of bronze in Africa! RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Fvo%7B%3Dd70f%2Bf%60%60%3E-13fb520e65e-0x103-

AFRICAN TRIBAL AUTHENTIC BENIN BRONZE PALACE EQUESTRIAN PLAQUE 16-17 CENTURY
AFRICAN TRIBAL BENIN BRONZE PALACE EQUESTRIAN PLAQUE NIGERIA CIRCA 16th-17th CENTURY This extraordinary Bronze of the Benin Kingdom in what is now Nigeria exhibits a virtuosity and sophistication of style that has astonished the Western world since they were visited in the 15th century. Their work was brought to Europe following a punitive expedition by the British in 1897. Causing a great sensation. The people of Benin, called Bini, are descendant from the Ife, also known for their remarkable Bronze. Almost all Benin art was created to honor the King. or Oba. These plaque were mounted on the walls of the Oba's Palace and record the history of the Benin Kingdom. Most depict the king or warrior Chiefs. The Benin Empire dates back to prehistoric times. The political systems that were monarchial, were well established before the fourteenth ... morecentury. The Rulers of Benin and Yoruba had close ties, and by the fifteenth century Benin became and important power in the region. With the backing of the monarchy selected artists of Benin developed a special style of sculpture vastly different from the rest of the region. They produced many fine bronze and or brass heads, figurines, brass plaques, and large rectangular metal pictures, which were used to decorate the Oba's palace. The Benin Empire soon became the largest of the political systems of the Guinea Coast and toward the middle of the sixteenth century; the Oba ruled an area. Which spread from modern Lagos to the Niger Delta. The above was too much for the British forces to bear and they swiftly concocted excuses- The sculptures must have been made by the Portuguese, the Egyptians, or the lost tribes of Israel"
