Mali, West Africa. In Dogon society. Horses were generally considered a luxury reserved for rich or powerful people and horses also occur in Dogon beliefs about the creation of the world, where horse and rider figures are seen as a symbol of a mythological personage. This powerful and evocative example measures 8.75 inches in width by 2.25 inches in depth by 9 inches in height(22.2 cm by 5.7 cm by 22.9 cm) The figure shows wear consistent with the mid-20th century, including rubbing, oxidization and a small amount of rust-like corrosion that are a normal part of the bronze aging process. It would make a fine collector’s piece for anyone interested in Dogon culture or African art in general. In the ancient empires of West Africa. Horses were associated with wealth, kingship, and prestige and represented power in several realms: political, military, legal, and mystical. Some rulers even handed down legal decisions while on horseback. Horses were rare in African empires south of the Sahara, and only kings and their cavalries were allowed to possess them. Archaeological evidence shows that horses were sacrificed and buried with royalty in areas just north of the Niger Delta as early as 1000 A.D. Horses appear in Dogon mythology about the creation of the world and it was the first animal to leave the ark in the descent to earth. Symbolizing its importance in the establishment of Dogon culture. The horse is incorporated into many ceremonial and functional sculptures. And equestrian figures are common in Dogon art, with the bronze figure sharing the long tradition of figurative iron, bronze, and brass casting by blacksmiths in West Africa reaching back to the period of the great Empire of Mali as early as the 12th century. In many West African traditional communities, blacksmiths enjoyed a privileged posit

Title, Igbo Female Figure Presenting Breasts Nigeria Africa, Type of Object, Sculpture. Alusi Shrine Figure Country of Origin, Nigeria, People, Igbo, ... moreMaterials, Wood. Pigment, cotton cloth, Approximate Age, Mid 20th Century, Dimensions, 25.5 inches x 7 inches, Overall Condition, Poor.  Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, cracks throughout the body. Some cracks with repairs(see feet, arms) chipped hairstyle, stains, Additional Information: This marvelously carved and old figure comes from the Igbo people. This sculpture has the body patterned with local traditions of scarification known as ‘Ichi marks’ cut into their foreheads signifying their status as an adult Igbo person. The white color of the face shows the figure to be a spirit and the red color placed on the legs adds an aesthetic quality. The Crest depicting traditional Igbo hairstyles surmounts the head. Scarification covers the face and the abdomen identifying the figure as a mature and senior woman of great beauty as do the bracelets. This sculpture shows some age as it has been repainted a number of times over the years. Though eroded by time and termites this sculpture reflects the skills of the Igbo artist in creating images capable of speaking to us over time and distance. Compromising one of the largest ethnic groupings in Nigeria the Igbo are well known for their sculptural tradition and vibrant masking performances. Living north of the Niger River their art has an extended history reaching back at least 14 hundred years to the wonderful bronzes found at Igbo Ukwu demonstrating a sculpture tradition that extends to the present. African Tribal Cast Bronze Ashanti Ghana Akan Gold Weight - pair of birds
Ashanti gold weights are also named Mbramoo(sing. abramoo) measures:2" 1/2 h by 1' 3/4 W. This is an Ashanti gold weight. Used in the measuring of gold and gold dust, which was mined and panned in great quantities along the West Coast of Africa, hence the name Gold Coast. Gold was used in the Ashanti kingdom, now known as Ghana, in trading with outsiders, making personal adornments, and as an internal currency. Ashanti weights such as these have a variety of accoutrements such as boxes. Spoons and balances used to hold or measure out gold dust. A full kit would include boxes, spoons, balance and around forty weights; this was known as a futoo and carried wrapped together in cloth. The futoo would then be put into a leather container or wooden box, or if the owner was a wealthy man, a cast-brass kuduo box. These boxes, full of gold ... moredust, could be buried with their owners and dug up again if needed, or hidden in times of trouble. The weight itself is made of bronze or brass. Weights were cast using the lost-wax method which is still the best way of preserving fine modeling and detail. measures:2" 1/2 h by 1' 3/4 W THANKS

The various ethnic groups throughout the Cameroon region. Including the Bamileke, Bamum, Tikar, are renowned for their skilled& highly imaginative metalwork, are known to produce some of the most sought after of all African sculptures. Probably representing royalty. The tribal member or ancestor depicted here bears an expression of elation. Captured in high relief, his well-defined facial features include raised eyebrows, eyes that telescope out of their sockets, a strong, prominent nose, protruding lips. A decorative striated collar, punctuated by bead-like formations along the bottom ... morerim, underscores the chin, while an incised headband accentuates the brow. Crowning the mask's head is an elaborate coiffure/headdress with multiple winged protuberances& raised'bead' adornments set within concentric rings. The center loop at the top of the mask suggests this piece may possibly have been used as a hip mask, worn on the ornate belt of a king or other tribal official. Despite some casting imperfections. This handsome mask is in very good overall condition. With its fairly thin-walled construction, it's not surprising that the lost-wax casting process resulted in some pin-holes in the collar& headdress, as well as a couple of very small holes present in the smooth-surfaced area above the headband. There is native repair to the coiffure(on the upper right side of the mask's coif) judging by the old patina at the site, inside& out, the repair may have been done at the time of casting. With the rich. Chocolaty-brown tone of the bronze, the mask has achie

Bronze Cast Mbamelke African Judgment Chair
Mbamelke African Judgment Chair. Made of cast bronze with intricate figurines, with 2 matching round side tables. A museum Quality Antiquity.Throughout history, cultures have used various types of torture devices to force the truth. Or in this case a confession. Many West and Central African tribes used"judgment chairs" in their criminal trials, chairs that were believed to have the power to the reveal the truth. This intricately decorated chair was used by the Mbamelke of Cameroon. The Mbamelke used separate chairs for both male and females. If you notice, the figures on the chair depict male and female spirits. The accused was forced to sit in the chair during the trial and if they were found guilty of a crime. Such as murder or adultery, they would actually be executed while sitting in the chair. I had the chance to sit in the ... morechair, and for some reason, it just had a sort of macabre feeling about it. Now you know why.
Antique Trade Bead necklace w African Bronze, Brass & old Amber resin
A BLUE SLATE DESIGN!~ This very tribal necklace has as its center a large. African, antique, bronze ball from a man's dancing belt, 20x28mm) with some weight to it. On either side are two simulated amber resin beads followed by six old large Powa beads, exceptional in their size. Next, nice red melons from Nepal and large brass bicons. It's finished with antique coconut heishi. Hefty, this necklace demands respect. 22 3/4 inches long. I use ancient. Antique, trade, vintage and even, on occasion, new beads. I arrange them into interesting, original patterns to to make one-of-a-kind necklaces that have a classic feel. Some old beads have imperfections; to me, that's part of their character, their history. They are, after all, artifacts; connections to the past. THANKS FOR LOOKING AND PLEASE SEE MY OTHER ITEMS.

lot of 13 Antique African Tribal Bronze/brass Gold Weight lost wax casts
Lot of 13 brass/bronze lost wax cast Antique African Tribal Gold Weights 1 3/4" up to 3 1/4" average 2" please ask any questions. Background and History The Ashanti/Asante/Asante/Akan people of Southern Ghana are known for their gold trade. In addition to mining and trading it they create elaborate gold and metal works of art. Fanciful gold weights are some of the bestknown examples of Akan arts reflecting their artistry in small scalebut carrying great meaning. Used to measure gold dust on scales. The gold weights are made of brass and sculpted in many different designs. Older weights 1400 to 1720 tend to be geometric; figurative shapes of animals or people date from 1720 to 1930. The weights were not only used for measuring. They were also worn as jewelry and storyteller charms. The storyteller would hang the charms on his ... morehat and have people point to a charm to hear its story. Some weights would carry traditional proverbial lore or simply show people in everyday activity or comment upon social and political relationships. Or to reflect upon religious acts and spiritual ideals. Humans, animals, fish, amphibians as well as objects of everyday life were apt subject for representation in weights. Each piece is individually made. No two are exactly the same because the mold is broken in the'lost-wax' process. This method is very labor-intensive. The initial form is sculpted out of wax which is then dipped several times into very fine powdered black mud and allowed to harden. Forming a clay casting around the mold. The clay is then heated until the wax melts and is poured out of its casting, leaving a hollow mold in the shape of the original sculpture. Finally, molten brass is poured into the casting replacing the old wax mold. Once cool, the cast is broken away from the brass; leaving a solid ornament. Check out my!Be sure to add me to your! Which was obtained through trade in European imports from the late 15th century onwards. Weights were cast using the lost-wax method which is still the best way of preserving fine modeling and detail. Antique African Art - Bamun - Bamileke Tribe Cameroon Heavy Cast Bronze Ladle
Offered at auction is an antique bronze ladle. Origin Bamun, probably Bamileke tribe, from Cameroon. Heavy casting, weight 7-8 pounds, 19.5" in length, with a wide, deep ladle bowl. The piece is highly detailed, estimated age from the later 19th century to 1930's era. The large end of the ladle depicts an African face, highly stylized, with cheek scarifications, and detailed hairstyle. The handle of the ladle contains an African native, tall and thin, with a slightly distended belly, clad in a native breechcloth. The figure is seated on or leaning against what might be a tree stump, and is holding an object in the right hand, probably a pestle for crushing herbs and berries. The face and bald head show further evidence of scarification. The ladle has a heavy patina, which is built up especially on the handle where it would be held ... moreby fingers and thumb. The inside of the ladle bowl is quite darkened and heavily encrusted with material from long-term usage. The collector I acquired it from in the mid-1990's was a former museum director and was an expert on African art. He said that the ladle was likely from one of two possible sources, either the house of a wealthy king or chief, or from an important shaman or witch doctor. He believed it was the latter, because of the human figure on the handle holding the pestle, and the scarifcations on the large face and the handle figure. His thinking was that the ladle was used in the preparation and cooking of medications and potions, and that figure ont he handle and the face on the bowl of the ladle were meant to draw out the medicinal essence from the materials being mixed and cooked together. All in all. This is a wonderful example of tribal art, a great native bronze casting in great condition. I've always found it fascinating that in African tribal work there is no division between artworks and utilitarian objects. It is all art. Looking at the fantastic face on the bowl of the ladle, it is easy to see how artists like Picasso, Braque, and Leger were a

Antique African Tribal Bronze Gold Weight lost wax cast Rare nice patina
Antique African Tribal Cast Bronze Gold Weight lots of nice patina.3" please ask any questions. The storyteller would hang the charms on his hat and have people point to a charm to hear ... moreits story. Vintage Antique Cameroon Bamoun Tikar? Bronze Currency Bracelet Tribal African
The woman that I acquired this bracelet from said that she acquired it second hand and she did not know anything about. I did not know much about it either other than it looked like an old tribal piece. After doing some research. I am pretty sure that it is a bronze currency bracelet from Africa. To my eye, it looks most like the currency bracelets made by the Bamoun-Tikar people in Cameroon. It looks vintage or antique to me with a nice dark patina. I think that the green or verdigris might be applied. I leave it to the buyer to determine exactly how old it is and where it is from. The overall diameter is about 4 1/2 to 4 3/4 inches. At its widest. It is about 3 3/4 inches wide. It weighs close to 1 pound 8 ounces. The gap between the open ends measures slightly less than 1 1/8 inches. The inside diameter measured from one side to the other ... moreis slightly over 2 1/4 inches. So your wrist should be narrower than that for it to be comfortably worn. The condition is much like you see it in my photos. It is generally in excellent condition with patina or tarnish and what looks like verdigris. There are irregularities that are expected of hand made items. Otherwise. There is no damage. My photos should give you a good idea of its general condition. I guarantee this bracelet to be as described and represented by my photos. The photos are part of the description. Those paying with Paypal must have a confirmed address registered with Paypal. If you pay with Paypal. I will ship only to your confirmed address. I like to leave feedback after I know that the item has arrived and that the buyer is satisfied. I reserve the right to cancel any bids without explanation. Please email me with any questions or suggestions. I do not ship on weekends. I might not be available to answer email on weekends. Seven photos should load with this listing.

Antique African Tribal Cast Bronze Burkina Faso sculpture - the beast
Fine Extremely Rare Antique(circa late 1800s) Burkina Faso Cast Bronze Large sculpture- The beast From the old private collection of the internationally celebrated artist and ardent Africanist. This is a rare. Museum quality authentic artifact(circa late 1800s) The item is about 4" tall in excellent antique condition. The basic method of lost-wax casting has been widely practiced on the African continent for centuries. While it is difficult to establish how the method was developed or introduced to the region. It is clear that West African sculptors were casting brass with this method for several hundred years prior to the arrival of the first Portuguese explorers along the coast in 1484. The technique requires a great deal of skill, involving extensive knowledge of both pottery and metalworking, and a careful attention to changing temperatures ... moreto prevent unwanted cracking or other damage to either the clay mold or to the metal sculpture during the casting process. Some of the earliest and most accomplished bronze works found in Africa date to the tenth century and are from a site called Igbo-Ukwu. Museum quality authentic artifact(circa early 1900) The size of the pendant is about 1 1/2" x 1 1/2 All items are traditionally handmade by Ashanti jewelrymakers. Amulets and Talismans: One of the most powerful forms of magic of African culture is that of the amulet or talisman. This can be used to attract love. Life, health, economic well-being and all types of benefit. Moreover, once consecrated, the amulet can be used to protect from spiritual predators and any kind of damage used by opposing dark forces. Since the dawn of man the various regions of African have looked to occult sciences and sacred truths. To this end. Esoteric traditions have begun to blend quickly. These may offer tribute to the Gods or to Nature, depending on the various branches of African magic, Palo, Obeah or Voodoo. ... moreThey may also offer later syncretic traditions; as a result you may find Catholic Saints or other figures in Voodoo amulets and talismans. Many would consider the making and consecration of amulets and talismans one of the most important. But difficult, parts of the practice. As a result, those who were able to consecrate such amulets were often considered the wisest and most important of the practitioners. They were greatly respected and feared, both for their spiritual prowess and their ability to deal with the hidden psychological condition of others. If we study the different lines that divide these beliefs; Voodoo. Candomble, Palo, Obeah, etc. we often find more similarities than differences. The spirits, histories and rituals are similar or in many cases exactly alike. We also find roots in rituals of ancient African origins, as well as the initial tools intended to help spiritual growth and the realization of personal desires. Talismans were often created in these ancient rituals. Secretly consecrated with the power of a divine entity or spirit. They were used for various purposes from what is now considered“white” Voodoo magic, to finding love, and even harming enemies.
