Very nice patina on this piece with geometric shapes and web-like patterns, with a rich chocolate hue along with green tinges from age. Appears to date ... morefrom the late 19th to early 20th century, circa 1880-1930. In good condition for its age although it does have a crack on the inside towards the rim as seen in the photos. This piece is most likely of West African origin, created by a sand cast bronze alloy method typical of the tribes Kasena or Baule from the Burkina Faso/Ghana region. The age and origin of this piece can only be estimated, and are concluded by comparing similar pieces from the time period and region it is attributed to.

Fine Ashanti Antique(circa late 1800s) Cast Bronze African Adornment. From the old private collection of the internationally celebrated artist and ardent ... moreAfricanist. This is a rare. Museum quality authentic artifact(circa late 1800s) representing Serpent head Amulet Pendant. The item is about 5" In excellent antique condition. Serpent: In West Africa the serpent plays an important role as the creator of humankind. The Ashanti of Africa tell how the Creator Python come from the heavens and settled in the river. A couple from the heavens and a couple from the earth were introduced to each other. But neither pair could have children until the python sprayed them with water from his mouth, saying"Kus, Kus. The Rainbow King plays a similar role. He is reminiscent of the cosmic serpent known as Shesha or Ananta[Endless] upon whose coils the Hindu creator. Vishnu, rests between cycles of creation. Olokun. Ruler of the sea is a central African naga king who once attempted to conquer the earth by means of the Great Flood. West African Antique Bronze/Brass Husband & Wife Playing Mancala
Bronze/Brass Cast Husband and Wife Playing Mancala. Approx 3" tall X 4" wide and 1&1/2 pounds in weight. Very fun piece that was made in the Lost Cast Method as follows: The process begins with beeswax. Latex, or another material with a low melting point. It must be soft enough for carving fine details, but hard enough to retain its shape. After the wax object has been carved, increasingly coarse layers of clay are applied to the object and allowed to dry. The first and finest clay slips capture the wax details in the smooth mold, and the coarser clay layers provide strength. The entire assemblage is fired, causing the original wax carving to melt away, leaving only a baked clay shell. Liquid metal is poured into the empty mold and left to cool and harden. Later, the clay exterior is broken open, revealing the finished metal ... moreobject beneath. In direct lost-wax casting, the object produced is always unique, as the mold is necessarily destroyed as part of the casting process. This is an original sculpture. Wonderful for the collector! Happy Bidding!

WEIGHT OVER 20 POUNDS African Bronze: The word Yoruba describes both a language and a group of people spread across Nigeria and Benin. Yoruba origins can be traced back to the holy city of Ife at the end of the first millennium. According to the Yoruba peoples’ myth of the origin. Of Ife, it was the place where the gods descended from the skies to populate the world. According to tradition, when the first Oba(Benin king) died his head was sent to Ife for burial, with Ife sending back a bronze head for the ancestors’ altar. ... moreFascinated by this creation Benin royalty beseeched the Ife king to send an artist who could teach the art of bronze work to Benin craftsmen. The Benin were already skilled working with this extremely rare metal called bronze but had trouble with the technique of casting. The Ife artist Ighea was sent and passed on the now legendary“lost wax” casting technique which enabled the Benin to create items using less bronze metal. Froo www.froo.com | Froo Cross Sell. Museum quality authentic artifact(circa mid- late 1800s) The item is about 2 3/2" x3" and 2 1/2 inner with 1 1/4 opening in excellent antique condition. Dogon art is extremely versatile. Although common stylistic characteristics– such as a tendency towards stylization– are apparent on the statues. Their art deals with the myths whose complex ensemble regulates the life of the individual. The sculptures are preserved in innumerable sites of worship, personal or family altars, altars for rain, altars to protect hunters, in market. As a general characterization of Dogon statues, one could say that they render the human body in a simplified way, reducing it ... moreto its essentials. Some are extremely elongated with emphasis on geometric forms. The subjective impression is one of immobility with a mysterious sense of a solemn gravity and serene majesty, although conveying at the same time a latent movement. Dogon sculpture recreates the hermaphroditic silhouettes of the Tellem, featuring raised arms and a thick patina made of blood and millet beer. The four Nommo couples, the mythical ancestors born of the god Amma, ornament stools, pillars or men’s meeting houses, door locks, and granary doors. The primordial couple is represented sitting on a stool, the base of which depicts the earth while the upper surface represents the sky; the two are interconnected by the Nommo. Horsemen are remainders of the fact that, according to myth, the horse was the first animal present on earth. The Dogon style has evolved into a kind of cubism: ovoid head, squared shoulders, tapered extremities, pointed breasts, forearms, and thighs on a parallel plane, hairdos stylized by three or four incised lines. Dogon sculptures serve as a physical medium in initiations and as an explanation of the world. They serve to transmit an understanding to the initiated, wh

Here Artist original clay sculpture is nearly ready for the foundry. Note the artist is still adding the finishing touches. Most sculptors prefer to work with clay or wax; some however. Do use wood and other mediums. Here the finished original clay is now complete. The sculptor will take it to the foundry now, get a bid then begin the first stages of the lost wax process. The first step can be shocking for some as they begin to decide how this original will be cut up. In order to prepare the original clay sculpture for molding. It will be dissected by cutting the clay with wire and by cutting the armature with a saw. The armature is what helped support the clay in place while the artist was creating it. Note the registration marks which later in the process will serve to realign the parts. Shown here are the sections of the original clay sculpture after having been dissected. Now the various parts of the original are carefully mounted on clay plugs before the rubber mold material is applied. The clay plug later serves as a pour spout for the mold.

Amulets and Talismans: One of the most powerful forms of magic of African culture is that of the amulet or talisman. This can be used to attract love. Life, health, economic well-being and all types of benefit. Moreover, once consecrated, the amulet can be used to protect from spiritual predators and any kind of damage used by opposing dark forces. Since the dawn of man the various regions of African have looked to occult sciences and sacred truths. To this end. Esoteric traditions have begun ... moreto blend quickly. These may offer tribute to the Gods or to Nature, depending on the various branches of African magic, Palo, Obeah or Voodoo. They may also offer later syncretic traditions; as a result you may find Catholic Saints or other figures in Voodoo amulets and talismans. Many would consider the making and consecration of amulets and talismans one of the most important. But difficult, parts of the practice. As a result, those who were able to consecrate such amulets were often considered the wisest and most important of the practitioners. They were greatly respected and feared, both for their spiritual prowess and their ability to deal with the hidden psychological condition of others. The spirits, histories and rituals are similar or in many cases exactly alike. African Tribal Currency Bracelet/Anklet Ethnographic Art, Bronze Jewelry AWESOM!
This amazing piece of ART or jewelery once had it's home with the Baule People of Cote d' Ivorie where it was made. An extraordinary bracelet or anklet made from bronze using the old lost wax casting of copper and tin alloy is thought to be from the 19th century conservatively. The condition is exceptional. No damage or repair shows it was clearly a favored old piece remaining unchanged from the t ime of it's acquisition in the 1940's. Pieces such as this served as currency but also as a show of wealth. The minute intricate detail of this piece is most remarkable! Three scorpions adorn it as well as the head of some marvelous character which extends out from the piece itself. It's nose or mouth as well as what appear to be ears hold bars of metal that imply more wealth! Scalloped and detailed half circles line both sides ... moreand appear on the body of the piece along with two whole detailed circles at the neck of the mysterious creatures elongated triangular head which may represent eyes. Antique Duoro Shipwreck Bronze African Okpoho Manilla
A truly fascinating mid 19th century Okpoho manilla or slave trade token. Salvaged from the Duoro shipwreck, dating to 1843. Manillas were a traditional African medium of exchange. Eventually they became known as slave trade money after Europeans began using them to acquire slaves from the African continent. This particular example was salvaged from the wreck of the Duoro. Lost on the Crewbathen rocks of the isles of Scilly, off the Southwestern tip of Great Britain in 1843. The ship left Liverpool, allegedly bound for Portugal with a cargo of textiles and munitions. However, when the wreck was discovered in 1973 the true cargo was found to be a large quantity of bronze Manillas. As the slave trade had been banned in Britain for over 36 years it is, therefore, thought the Duoro was actually bound for South Africa on an illegal slave trading ... morerun. Diameter: 2 1/4 inches. Weight: 59 g. Condition: Very good. Some ware consistent with long term ocean burial. Provenance: From the Duoro shipwreck. Salvaged in 1973 by Terry Hiron and Jim Heslin. Thanks! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Roughly 1-5/8" tall x 2-3/8" inches long.Made of brass or bronze. I dont know much about them but here is some info that i gleened off wikipedia: Akan goldweights were used as a measuring system by the Akan people of West Africa. Particularly for weighing gold dust which was until ... morereplaced by paper money and coins. They are referred to locally as mrammou and the weights are made of brass and not gold. Used to weigh gold and merchandise. At first glance the goldweights look like miniature models of everyday objects. Based on the Islamic ounce. Each weight had a known measurement. This provided merchants with secure and fair-trade arrangements with one another. The status of a man increased significantly if he owned a complete set of weights. Complete small sets of weights were gifts to newly wedded men. This insured that he would be able to enter the merchant trade respectably and successfully. Beyond their practical application, the weights are miniature representations of West African culture items such as adinkra symbols. Plants, animals and people. The major crops grown are yams, peanuts, and maize. The men in the ... moretribe help with clearing the land and hunting. The Bamileke tribe worships a supreme god and their ancestors. Ancestral spirits are embodied in the skulls of deceased ancestors. Skulls of ancestors are kept to give the spirits a place to reside to prevent them from causing trouble for the family. If a skull is not kept, a ceremony must be done to compensate. Much of the art produced by the Bamileke tribe is associated with royal ceremonies. Art objects show the position of a person in the tribal hierarchy. As a person descended or ascended the social ladder, the materials used and the number of pieces changed. In a chief’s residence one would find ancestral figures and masks, as well as headdresses, bracelets, beaded thrones, pipes, necklaces, swords, horns, fans, elephant tusks, leopard skins, terracotta pots, and dishware. All of this was used to assert the chief’s power. Beadwork and masks are common in this tribe. Masks were decorated with copper, cowrie shells, and beads. They were carved to represent male and female heads, stags, buffalo, birds, and elephants. Bamileke masks were usually worn during ceremonies and rituals such as funerals and annual festivals. Today we have this unique African Bamileke bronze seated court figure from Cameroon. The Bamileke tribe was originally from an area to the north known as Mbam. Although the Bamileke are primarily farmers. They are also hunters and traders. Women are responsible for planting and harvesting due to the belief that women make the soil more fruitful. The major crops grown are yams, peanuts, and maize. The men in the tribe help with clearing the land ... moreand hunting. Vintage African Bronze Sculpture Animal Folk Art Deer Cow ?? Unsigned
A very nice African Vintage Bronze to add to your collection! Bronze is approx. 15" long and approx. 9 1/2" tall. Weight is 6 1/2 lbs. The provenance I have on this unsigned art is that my neighbor bought it in the 60's. I can see there may have been a repair on the right front leg or that was a production flaw either way Lou says he never had it repaired. There is no wobble or does it seem that front leg flaw is unstable. As you can see there is some pitting to the bronze and some clean up may be required or left as is. I don't know what is the best process to shine up and clean but I am not sure all would want that, so I am leaving as is. Thank you for looking!

African Tribal Rare Antique Akan Ashanti Cast Bronze Large sculpture - Elephant
Fine Extremely Rare Antique(circa late 1800s) A shanti Cast Bronze Large sculpture- Elephant From the old private collection of the internationally celebrated artist and ardent Africanist. This is a rare. Museum quality authentic artifact(circa late 1800s) The item is about 7 1/4" x 9 1/4" in excellent antique condition. The basic method of lost-wax casting has been widely practiced on the African continent for centuries. While it is difficult to establish how the method was developed or introduced to the region. It is clear that West African sculptors were casting brass with this method for several hundred years prior to the arrival of the first Portuguese explorers along the coast in 1484. The technique requires a great deal of skill, involving extensive knowledge of both pottery and metalworking, and a careful attention to changing ... moretemperatures to prevent unwanted cracking or other damage to either the clay mold or to the metal sculpture during the casting process. Some of the earliest and most accomplished bronzeworks found in Africa date to the tenth century and are from a site called Igbo-Ukwu. Froo www.froo.com | Froo Cross Sell.
