This auction is for an authentic antique figural African Art bronze statue from the Dogon Tribe in Mali. The bronze is of a tribesman carrying what I ... morebelieve is a snake in his right hand. The man appears to be an elder. As he has a long beard. The bronze has absolutely amazing patina and has started to green in places. This piece was found in an estate auction in which the man had hundreds of pieces of African art, all museum quality! This bronze also includes a specially made stand which fits around the man's abdomen and his feet rest on a 1 inch black painted wood block for 360 degree viewing! The bronze(without the stand) is approximately 8 inches tall and 2 inches wide. The stand adds about 1 inch to the total height. The Dogon Tribe: The Dogon are an ethnic group living in the central plateau region of the country of Mali. In the West of the Continent of Africa, south of the Niger bend. The population numbers between 400.000 and 800,000. The Dogon are best known for their religious traditions. Their mask dances, wooden sculpture(making the bronze more rare! and their architecture. Dogon art is primarily sculpture. Dogon art revolves around religious values. Ideals, and freedoms. Dogon sculptures are not made to be seen publicly, and are commonly hidden from the public eye within the houses of families, sanctuaries, or kept with the Hogon. The importance of secrecy is due to the symbolic meaning behind the pieces and the process by which they are made. Themes found throughout Dogon sculpture consist of figures with raised arms. Superimposed bearded figures. Horsemen, stools with caryatids, women with children, figures covering their faces, women grinding pearl millet, women bearing vessels on their heads, donkeys bearing cups, musicians, dogs, quadruped-shaped troughs or benches, figures bending from the waist, mirror-images, aproned figures. And standing figures. Signs of other contacts and origins are evident in Dogon art. The Dogon people were not the first inhabitants of the cliffs of Bandiaga

Fine Ashanti Antique(circa late 1800s) Asante Kuduo Bronze Gold Dust Box with mongoose figure on the lid. From the old private collection of the internationally ... morecelebrated artist and ardent Africanist. This is a rare. Museum quality authentic artifact(circa late 1800s) The item is about 3 5/8" diameter x 2 1/2 hight with lid in excellent antique condition. Gold dust was the medium of exchange in West Africa for hundreds of years. Accordingly. A range of paraphernalia associated with storing, handling and weighing gold dust was developed. This box is one such item. It was used for storing and carrying gold dust. It is cast in the manner of the gold weights used in weighing gold themselves- using the lost wax process. The lid fits in the box and fits tightly, even though it has been cast separately. The lid has been cast with a series of wave patterns. Indeed, the box is similar in appearance to the weights used to measure gold dust. Possibly, this was to divert attention from its contents. But equally, it is possible that such boxes were used as weights themselves. The box has excellent patina and very obvious age from many years of handling. Gold dust was stored in such boxes. It was kept inside the box wound up in a cloth. Spoons were used to ladle the dust from box to scales. And personal weights were used to weigh gold dust which became the currency used to settle everyday transactions. Each party to any transaction would typically use their own weights. The negotiating process not only would include the cost in gold dust of the items being transacted over but also a comparison of weights. Debate over the scales used and the purity of the gold dust(gold often was adulterated with brass filings) Even transactions as rudimentary as buying vegetables in a street market necessitated this process. Cast brass gold dust paraphernalia was used by the Akan who occupy a large part of West Africa including parts of Ghana and the Ivory Coast and include many sub-ethnic groups such as the Baule and the Asante. BACKGROUND ... moreThe powerful ancient Benin kingdom was founded by the son of an Ife king in the early 14th century AD. It was situated in the forest area of southern Nigeria. The art of bronze casting was introduced around the year 1280. The kingdom reached its maximum size and artistic splendor in the 15th and 16th century. For a long time the Benin bronze sculptures were the only historical evidence dating back several centuries into the West African past. And both the level of technical accomplishment attained in bronze casting, as well as the monumental vigor of the figures represented, were the object of great admiration. Benin bronzes are better known than the artworks from Ife or Owo due to their presence in Western museums since 1890s. In the thirteenth century, the city of Benin was an agglomeration of farms enclosed by walls and a ditch. Each clan was subject to the Oba(king) The“Benin style” is a court art from the palace of the Oba, and has nothing in common with tribal art. The Benin Oba employed a guild of artisans who all lived in the same district of the city. Bronze figures ordered by the king were kept in the palace. The empire flourished until 1897, when the palace

No question ask* PLEASE ADD ME TO YOUR FAVORITES LIST* Hi! My name is Elena. I’m collecting ancient beads from 1979. Most of my beads were found in Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. To be precise they were found between Mary city(Turkmenistan) and Samarkand(Uzbekistan) That area in past was called Bactria. Nowadays there are a lot of ruins older than 2000 years in this region. I like ancient beads very much and want that other collectors will be able to obtain them without paying a lot of money. That is why my prices are very modest. I lived in Asgabat city(the ... morecapital of Turkmenistan) over 30 years. About 15 km from Asgabat there is Nisa– former residence of Alexander the Great. And capital of Parthia. In most cases the ancient beads. Not only played the role of jewelry but also the status of the person wearing them. You were able to tell the social status of an individual based on the beads they were wearing, while other used these beads as talismans protecting themselves against bad luck and the evil eye. Certain beads that have zigzagging lines are supposed to confuse the evil eye which would get lost in these lines. Beads that have the image of an eye try to just absorb the evil energy, and thus protect the person who is wearing them. Periodically the beads would be washed in salt water, because it is believe the salt water kills the negative energy. The image of the eye was sometimes very abstract and was more like an image of a flower, however sometimes the beads would correctly reflect the wearers eyes, including the color. Parthia kingdom. The tsar of Parthia- Mitridat I(around 170—138/137 BC) took away the Selevkied's eastern satrapies(land) Persia. The largest part of Mesopotamia, Armenia and a part of the
Rare Old African Bronze Chain, Necklace/Green Patina/Estate, Archaeolgical Item
Rare. Antique bronze/brass/copper alloy chain necklace with beautiful, old blue/green/verdigris patina. Item was bought at an estate sale of a Santa Fe collector of African art, who started accumulating his massive and varied beautiful collection in the 1960's and1970's These beads are very old, but the age is somewhat of a mystery. Here's what I have found so far: The bag that this strand was in had a tag stating"Sokoto. Nigeria; Ca. 300 BC; Archaeological find" Sokoto archaeological work took place on an offshoot of the Niger River. During the 1970's, after which these beads would have been bought, there was much archaelogical excavation in the Djenne area of Mali, by the Niger River, and metal, clay, glass beads, etc. from ancient cultures were found. There is an article on metalworking in Africa that states that ... moremetal working can be traced back to the early date of 300 BC, and metal beads have been made for thousands of years in Africa. Dubin's book on the History of Beads shows an excavated strand of beads, with a similar patina, from Djenne, Mali and states that the beads may be from the late middle ages, c. AD 1200"when Western Sudanese kingdoms flourished and cities such as Djenne and Timbuktu were imprtant centers of learning and trade. It is not clear whether the beads were imported or made in Djenne" My new book. African Beads, Jewel of a Continent" by Evelyn Simak, is a wonderful reference for the history and trade of beads made in Africa, and it states that copper and bronze were late introductions, by trade, into Africa. They show an old patinaed necklace and date it as 19th century or earlier. Early excavated pieces in Mali show iron chains made to be worn, but I'm not sure if iron would have a patina like this piece- probably only something in a copper alloy. So, I will let all you amateur archaeologists and bead/jewelry/African art lovers do you own research from here! I'm guessing that the chain is closer to the 1200-1500 date, when the old Dj

African,Gan Bronze Snake Pendant/African Amber, Vintage Brass Beads
I am listing an ethnic design necklace that I created. Made with a vintage African bronze snake pendant from the Gan people in Burkina Faso. Pendant is made in the lost wax casting technique, each piece unique and made individually. Pendant is strung with African"amber" beads(which are usually either newer copal or bakelite, but highly collectible nevertheless, as witnessed by prices I've seen them selling for a shows of ethnographic material) and old African bronze/brass beads. I had a African trader friend tell that these decorative beads are old and that he had never seen ones like them and neither have I. The amber came from a strand I found at an estate sale but decided to use the beads in jewelry making in spite of the fact that several African traders/dealers have loved and wanted them, so I know they are good. Necklace: ... more20" around; Pendant 3 1/2" W x 3 1/4" L; Gold filled clasp. Please watch my site for other necklaces I will be listing. That I have designed with vintage, Pre-Columbian, gemstone, and trade beads, strung with ethnic and antique pendants, fishing lures, those of my own design and castings, and other funky, fun and interesting things I find on my flea market adventure. African Bronze Antelope Statue 1940's
Here is a large and graceful bronze statue of a grazing antelope. This elegant figure is 14” 35.5cm) long. 8 1/2” 21.5cm) high, 2 1/2” 6.3cm) wide. It was cast in the second quarter of the twentieth century, collected in the 1940's in Ouagadougou, Upper Volta, West Africa and acquired by the seller at a major New York City Gallery in 1976. The antelope is frequently represented in Bobo mask-making and statues; this large and fecund animal is believed to incarnate the powerful forces of fertility and growth. The"Lost-Wax" process was used to cast this calm and peaceful figure. First. The statue was carefully modeled in wax, then covered with a clay mold with one or more channels into which molten metal was poured, evaporating and replacing the wax. The resultant“waste-mold” was then broken to retrieve the metal figure, which ... moreis in effect a unique and original work of sculptural art. Bronze" is any of several alloys consisting mainly of copper and tin although zinc. Lead, antimony and other available metals may be added. A minor casting flaw to one hind leg does not detract. As may be noted in the close-up image of the leg. Overall, this magnificent work of African art is in excellent condition. Bobo Burkina Faso(Ex: Upper Volta. West Africa Second Quarter. 20th Century. Museum quality authentic artifact(circa late 1800s) representing an warrior. The item is about 3 1/8" In excellent antique condition. Ashanti gold weights are also named Mbramoo(sing. abramoo) This is an Ashanti gold weight. Used in the measuring of gold and gold dust, which was mined and panned in great quantities along the West Coast of Africa, hence the name Gold Coast. Gold was used in the Ashanti kingdom, now known as Ghana, in trading with outsiders, making personal adornments, and as an internal currency. Ashanti weights such as these have a variety of accoutrements such as boxes. Spoons and balances used to hold or measure out gold dust. A full kit would ... moreinclude boxes, spoons, balance and around forty weights; this was known as a futoo and carried wrapped together in cloth. The futoo would then be put into a leather container or wooden box. Or if the owner was a wealthy man, a cast-brass kuduo box. These boxes, full of gold dust, could be buried with their owners and dug up again if needed, or hidden in times of trouble. The weight itself is made of bronze or brass. Which was obtained through trade in European imports from the late 15th century onwards. Weights were cast using the lost-wax method which is still the best way of preserving fine modeling and detail. A Short History of Ashanti Gold Weights The vast gold fields of Africa have produced not only great wealth. But have generated trade and art works. In Ashanti(present-day Ghana) A set of scales, and of brass weights for measuring out gold-dust, the local currency. Was a treasured item for everyone, and their neighbors, and the vast quantities of gold mined and panned within the Asante kingdom were used for trading with outsiders. For making regalia and personal adornment. And as an internal currency( McLeod 1981. 122) Not for nothing was this area called
