My Grandfather purchased this proud African warrior and his steed in Nigeria- circa 1960. It is made of a heavy. Bronze-colored metal. I'm no metallurgist, ... morebut this is a solid piece. One of the coolest features of this piece is that the rider detaches from the horse. The detail is amazing- his hand even fits around a protrusion of the horse's reins. The statue(both pieces combined) is 10" high. 8" long, and 3 1/2" wide. When separated, the rider is 6" x 3 1/2" x 2" and the horse is 10" x 8" x 2" Posted with

Title, Ife Bronze Head of Oni Yoruba Nigeria African Type of Object, Casting Head, Country of Origin, Nigeria, People, Yoruba at Ife, Materials, Brass- ... moreBronze, Approximate Age, Unknown Dimensions, 11.25 inches H. x 5.25 inches W. x 6.5 deep, Overall Condition, Poor. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, some oxidation. Broken crown decoration, damage with large crack in the back of head, crack at the edge of crown, cracks and holes in neck, holes in places, Additional Information: This casting head of King Oni is a fine example of one of the most famous metalworking traditions in world history. The present head is a 20th Century copy modeled after the great Yoruba center at Ife dating originally approximately 1100-1450 A.D. The famous archaeological site at Ife in Nigeria produced a number of remarkable objects and bronze heads cast in bronze including the original of this late replica that was also cast in Nigeria. Ife is considered to be the center and origin of the Yoruba people. This bronze cast head is of an Oni. The ruler at Ife, who still hold sway over the Yoruba at Ife today. That this is a replica cannot be doubted, but what is important to note is that the skill of the Nigerian bronze and brass casters of today who cast this vessel continue a tradition nearly 1000 years old and have not lost their skill in producing interesting works of art. The scarification is thought to be an indicator of royals at Ife and the large device protruding from the top of the crown was thought to be made of magical plants. see close similar examples in: Nigeria Art. Antique African BENIN Bronze Tribal Art Sculpture NIGERIAN Princess' Head Ref: BR220213 This is a large and impressive sculpture depicting a Benin ... morePrincess standing approximately 14 inches(35.5cm) high and weighing 3.9 kg. It was sculpted by hand and cast in bronze using the lost wax process. The people of Benin(now known as Nigeria) are descended from the Ife tribe and have been making bronzes in exactly the same way for many hundreds of years. I am not an expert; it is therefore quite difficult to date this piece accurately but I believe that it was probably made in the first half of the 20th century. Of course there is a distinct possibility that it could be considerably older. There are a few small holes here and there and a couple of larger ones on the head(see photos) There is also some oxidisation. Mainly on the face. Condition is otherwise good. P hotographs form a very important part of my description and therefore bidders are advised to study them carefully and to contact me for any additional information they may need. Mali, West Africa. In Dogon society. Horses were generally considered a luxury reserved for rich or powerful people and horses also occur in Dogon beliefs about the creation of the world, where horse and rider figures are seen as a symbol of a mythological personage. This powerful and evocative example measures 8.75 inches in width by 2.25 inches in depth by 9 inches in height(22.2 cm by 5.7 cm by 22.9 cm) The figure shows wear consistent with the mid-20th century, including rubbing, oxidization and a small amount of rust-like corrosion that are a normal part of the bronze aging process. It would make a fine collector’s piece for anyone interested in Dogon culture or African art in general. In the ancient empires of West Africa. Horses were associated with wealth, kingship, and prestige and represented power in several realms: political, military, legal, and mystical. Some rulers even handed down legal decisions while on horseback. Horses were rare in African empires south of the Sahara, and only kings and their cavalries were allowed to possess them. Archaeological evidence shows that horses were sacrificed and buried with royalty in areas just north of the Niger Delta as early as 1000 A.D. Horses appear in Dogon mythology about the creation of the world and it was the first animal to leave the ark in the descent to earth. Symbolizing its importance in the establishment of Dogon culture. The horse is incorporated into many ceremonial and functional sculptures. And equestrian figures are common in Dogon art, with the bronze figure sharing the long tradition of figurative iron, bronze, and brass casting by blacksmiths in West Africa reaching back to the period of the great Empire of Mali as early as the 12th century. In many West African traditional communities, blacksmiths enjoyed a privileged posit

Rare antique African tribal Akan/Ashanti bronze gold dust box. REDUCED
This 19th Century box was found in a market in Cote d'Ivoire(Ivory Coast) West Africa in 1991 or 92. Boxes like this were made by the Akan(Ashanti, Baule) people of West Africa by the lost-wax(cire perdue) method of moulding bronze and used to carry and store gold dust. Other Akan gold dust paraphanalia made from bronze and brass include rounded spoons to shovel the gold dust, decorated brass weights and tiny scales-dishes to weigh the gold. Some comments suggest that the boxes themselves or the lids on their own might also have been used as weights for larger amounts of gold. The lid of this box fits well and is probably original to the box. The lid is decorated with four birds; one of them was already headless when I bought it. And judging by the patina had been headless for a long time. The starting price for this object is set quite ... morelow because of the damage to the lid. Nowadays the decorated lids are sometimes found separate from the boxes and although this lid has been damaged, being with the original box makes this object very collectible. Approx size: length 64 mm(2 1/2 inches) x width 30 mm(1 3/8 inches) x 25 mm(1 inch) box height. Dispatch is by regular international registered mail: £12.00 postage for all the EU including the UK. And £15.00 worldwide. I will combine postage on purchases made during the same week if you let me know you are bidding on other items.

There it was that the gods Oduduwa and Obatala descended from the heaven to create earth and its inhabitants. Oduduwa himself became the first ruler, oni, of Ile-Ife. To this day Yoruba kings trace ancestry to Oduduwa. Of all the centers of African art, there is none so remarkable for extraordinary accomplishments in many fields of art as the ancient town of Ife, the ritual center of the great Yoruba tribe of western Nigeria. Ife gave its name to this art. Ife art includes terra-cotta and bronze heads and busts, stone sculpture, stools and religious pieces carved in quartz, monumental granite monoliths, statues of humans and animals. Both the terra-cotta and bronze pieces belong to a series that has been interpreted by some specialists as idealized portraits, and occasionally a bust or a head has been identified as that of an oni or a dignitary. They date from 12th to the 15th. Ife style is reminiscent of that of Benin, which flourished in the 16th century. The bronze heads were cast b

Vintage Bronze Elephant Pendant Mommy & Baby Safari Roll Tide Alabama African
Hi there. I am selling everything in my world. I need desperately to raise money. I just found out termites were eating my house. I have a lot of things that I don't need. I thought it would be a good time to downsize my world. And hopefully make some money to buy new walls. LOOK BELOW FOR LARGE PHOTOS! This is a bronze elephant pendant. It is bronze and a mommy and baby and they are really cute. The elephant is also the mascot of the University of Alabama! I bought this at an estate sale. I am not sure how old it is. Or what it is worth really, This estate sale was of a jewelry designer. And she had pearls, made jewelry, half made jewelry, and tons of beads and charms. There was gold wire. And silver wire, and findings to make earrings, and necklaces, it was really cool! I have been making plans to make something out of all these great ... morefinds that I got in her treasure trove. But I don't think I will ever get around to it. I need to raise some money. So I will just sell a lot of the great things I got there for now, and I am sure they will come back around. This pendant measures 38 mm by 26 mm by 2 mm and weighs 20.4 carats. Which is 4.11 grams. I love it. But I need to make money, so there you go- no reserve, cheap shipping, starting bid under a buck! African antique gold weight lost wax casting Bronze 4"
Antique African Lost wax casting Bronze gold weight.4" tall Background and History The Ashanti/Asante/Asante/Akan people of Southern Ghana are known for their gold trade. In addition to mining and trading it they create elaborate gold and metal works of art. Fanciful gold weights are some of the bestknown examples of Akan arts reflecting their artistry in small scalebut carrying great meaning. Used to measure gold dust on scales. The gold weights are made of brass and sculpted in many different designs. Older weights 1400 to 1720 tend to be geometric; figurative shapes of animals or people date from 1720 to 1930. The storyteller would hang the charms on his hat and have people point to a charm to hear its story. Some weights would carry ... moretraditional proverbial lore or simply show people in everyday activity or comment upon social and political relationships. Or to reflect upon religious acts and spiritual ideals. Humans, animals, fish, amphibians as well as objects of everyday life were apt subject for representation in weights. The initial form is sculpted out of wax which is then dipped several times into very fine powdered black mud and allowed to harden. Forming a clay casting around the mold. The clay is then heated until the wax melts and is poured out of its casting, leaving a hollow mold in the shape of the original sculpture. WEIGHT OVER 20 POUNDS African Bronze: The word Yoruba describes both a language and a group of people spread across Nigeria and Benin. Yoruba origins can be traced back to the holy city of Ife at the end of the first millennium. According to the Yoruba peoples’ myth of the origin. Of Ife, it was the place where the gods descended from the skies to populate the world. According to tradition, when the first Oba(Benin king) died his head was sent to Ife for burial, with Ife sending back a bronze head for the ancestors’ altar. ... moreFascinated by this creation Benin royalty beseeched the Ife king to send an artist who could teach the art of bronze work to Benin craftsmen. The Benin were already skilled working with this extremely rare metal called bronze but had trouble with the technique of casting. The Ife artist Ighea was sent and passed on the now legendary“lost wax” casting technique which enabled the Benin to create items using less bronze metal. Froo www.froo.com | Froo Cross Sell. Yoruba origins can be traced back to the holy city of Ife at the end of the first millennium. According to the Yoruba peoples’ myth of the origin. Of Ife, it was the place where the gods descended from the skies to populate the world. According to tradition, when the first Oba(Benin king) died his head was sent ... moreto Ife for burial, with Ife sending back a bronze head for the ancestors’ altar. Fascinated by this creation Benin royalty beseeched the Ife king to send an artist who could teach the art of bronze work to Benin craftsmen. Antique Duoro Shipwreck Bronze African Okpoho Manilla - 1843
A truly fascinating mid 19th century Okpoho manilla or slave trade token. Salvaged from the Duoro shipwreck, dating to 1843. Manillas were a traditional African medium of exchange. As the slave trade had been banned in Britain for over 36 years it is, therefore, thought the Duoro was actually bound for South Africa on an illegal slave trading ... morerun. Diameter: 2 1/4 inches. Weight: 59 g. Condition: Very good. Some ware consistent with long term ocean burial. Provenance: From the Duoro shipwreck. Salvaged in 1973 by Terry Hiron and Jim Heslin.
