Gold Weights: The Gold weights or Mbramoo of the Akan are stylized miniature sculptures traditionally used to weigh bags of gold dust for use as currency. ... moreMade of bronze or brass the weights are made using the traditional lost wax casting technique(I highly recommend viewing this for a precursory view of the technique) The weights themselves often became status symbols with higher nobility indicted with not only owning more weights but the degree of casting in the weights and the accompanying accouterments like spoons and decorative chests. Each weight was made to be equivalent to a Uquiya or Islamic ounce(roughly 27.3 grams) With the weights either being filed down or adorned with beads to achieve the perfect weight. Though long since out of use for actual gold measurements, the weights have continued to be made and serve now more as collectible handmade sculptures. This particular piece is a Rooster or Chicken measuring about 1.75 in long by 2 in tall, with a lovely filigree and patina making it wonderful for any collector! Motifs: Akan gold weights were often used not only for simple measurements but to strike up conversation during business transactions by each conveying a unique story or idea through their designs and representations. These design motifs usually fall into three trends; courtly figures. Adinkra symbols or representational animals. The figures representing Ashanti nobility tend to be allegories. Myths and fables of the Ashanti's origins. The Adinkra symbols are much flatter, rectangular designs based upon the Ashanti Adrinkra system of writing where philosophical concepts and aphorisms are represented with stylized patterns and designs(the Adrinkra is not a phonetic system of writing and holds no capability for writing nouns, verbs, etc but instead conveys transcendent thoughts on the nature of existence) The animal representations often are attempts to convey proverbs relating to the individual animals. Museum quality authentic artifact(circa mid- late 1800s) The item is about 3 1/2" x3 1/2" and 2 1/4 inner with 1"opening in excellent antique condition. Dogon art is extremely versatile. Although common stylistic characteristics– such as a tendency towards stylization– are apparent on the statues. Their art deals with the myths whose complex ensemble regulates the life of the individual. The sculptures are preserved in innumerable sites of worship, personal or family altars, altars for rain, altars to protect hunters, in market. As a general characterization of Dogon statues, one could say that they render the human body in a simplified ... moreway, reducing it to its essentials. Some are extremely elongated with emphasis on geometric forms. The subjective impression is one of immobility with a mysterious sense of a solemn gravity and serene majesty, although conveying at the same time a latent movement. Dogon sculpture recreates the hermaphroditic silhouettes of the Tellem, featuring raised arms and a thick patina made of blood and millet beer. The four Nommo couples, the mythical ancestors born of the god Amma, ornament stools, pillars or men’s meeting houses, door locks, and granary doors. The primordial couple is represented sitting on a stool, the base of which depicts the earth while the upper surface represents the sky; the two are interconnected by the Nommo. Horsemen are remainders of the fact that, according to myth, the horse was the first animal present on earth. The Dogon style has evolved into a kind of cubism: ovoid head, squared shoulders, tapered extremities, pointed breasts, forearms, and thighs on a parallel plane, hairdos stylized by three or four incised lines. Dogon sculptures serve as a physical medium in initiations and as an explanation of the world. They serve to transmit an understanding to

The basic method of lost-wax casting has been widely practiced on the African continent for centuries. While it is difficult to establish how the method was developed or introduced to the region. It is clear that West African sculptors were casting brass with this method for several hundred years prior to the arrival of the first Portuguese explorers along the coast in 1484. The technique requires a great deal of skill, involving extensive knowledge of both pottery and metalworking, and a careful attention to changing temperatures to prevent ... moreunwanted cracking or other damage to either the clay mold or to the metal sculpture during the casting process. Some of the earliest and most accomplished bronze works found in Africa date to the tenth century and are from a site called Igbo-Ukwu. Bronze pieces created by the lost wax method involves creating a model in beeswax. Once completed. Wax rods are attached to it and the entire model is encased in layers of fine clay. The structure is heated and the melted wax runs out through the channels or wax rods, molten metal is poured into the mold, created after wax was lost- the metal cools and hardens, the mold is broken and the piece has been created. This is a antique African Slave Bracelet Copper or Bronze manillas.
This is a antique African Slave Bracelet Copper or Bronze manillas. I have not scratched the patina to see if it is Copper or Bronze. These were C opper or bronze arm bracelets. In exchange for thes e ornaments. Once manufactured in Europe, African chieftains delivered people. Sometimes of their own tribes, into the hands of slave traders bound for the Americas. This small manilla measures 2 1/8" by 2 1/8" I believe to be pretty rare. I have never seen any before. there was an article in the December 1977 issue of National Geographic. Which tells about a ship that sank in the mid 18th century on the reefs of Bermuda. On this ship were found a treasure of these manillas.

YORUBA BRONZE CURRENCY BRACELET #2030 - For African Art Gallery
YORUBA BRONZE CURRENCY BRACELET#2030 Tribe: Yoruba. Country: Nigeria. Material: Bronze. Size:nbsp6" 15.24 cm) Diameter. Item: 2030 Condition: Heavy oxidation but good condition. Provenance: James E Adkins Estate Collection(Florida. USA) The use of imported copper and brass bracelets or'manillas' as currency goes back at least to 1500. When the Portuguese based at the mouth of the Rio Real exchanged them for various commodities, from yams to cattle and slaves. These Yoruba bracelets were used as currency by the natives, but also melted down by them and recast into other forms, and used as currency. This situation continued until the beginning of the 20th century when the British. By then governing Nigeria, wanted to establish their own currency and forbade the use of any other. Much of the native currency was then buried and dug ... moreup again, only much later. There is some disagreements as to whether this type of object was wrought(that is. Superb old African Ashanti or Baoule Geometric Bronze Goldweight
An old Akan- Asante gold-weight from the Gold Coast(Ghana) known as Islamic weights. The use of gold was limited in the past on the African continent. Due to the restrictions of Islam. In gold trading, Akan merchants used bronze figurines as gold weights, also known as mrammuo, these were figurative, either human figures or animal representations, or abstract designs- all were created using the lost-wax process measure 1" 3/8 by 1" 1/8 3.5 cm by 3cm Gold dust was used as exchange up until the time that Europeans introduced their currency; the gold trader's equipment also included scales. Tiny boxes, and brass spoons for the gold dust. Akan. Or Asante weights were calibrated and would correspond to a certain weight of the gold dust or gold metal that was being weighed. Calibration was possible in this case by the insertion of ... morecopper insets in the holes of the weight, these are not decorative but are rather intentional in order to adjust the ponderal value of the gold being weighed. Nice patina. Origin: Akan. Asante ethnic group- GHANA Materials: Bronze Condition details: Good with age and usage patina Dimensions: 1" 3/8 by 1" 1/8 3.5 cm by 3cm

lot of 4 Antique African Tribal Brass/Bronze Gold Weights
A ntique African Tribal Lost wax cast Brass/Bronze Gold Weights.Lot of 4 aproox 2.5" tall Background and History The Ashanti/Asante/Asante/Akan people of Southern Ghana are known for their gold trade. In addition to mining and trading it they create elaborate gold and metal works of art. Fanciful gold weights are some of the bestknown examples of Akan arts reflecting their artistry in small scalebut carrying great meaning. Used to measure gold dust on scales. The gold weights are made of brass/bronze and sculpted in many different designs.people sculptures date from 1720 to 1930. The weights were not only used for measuring. They were also worn as jewelry and storyteller charms. The storyteller would hang the charms on his hat and have people point to a charm to hear its story. Some weights would carry traditional proverbial lore or ... moresimply show people in everyday activity or comment upon social and political relationships. Or to reflect upon religious acts and spiritual ideals. Humans, animals, fish, amphibians as well as objects of everyday life were apt subject for representation in weights. Each piece is individually made. No two are exactly the same because the mold is broken in the'lost-wax' process. This method is very labor-intensive. The initial form is sculpted out of wax which is then dipped several times into very fine powdered black mud and allowed to harden. Forming a clay casting around the mold. The clay is then heated until the wax melts and is poured out of its casting, leaving a hollow mold in the shape of the original sculpture. Finally, molten brass/bronze is poured into the casting replacing the old wax mold. Once cool, the cast is broken away from the brass/bronze; leaving a solid ornament. Imperial LIGHT HORSE South African CAVALRY Badge SET Cap & Coll BRONZE Officer's

The first commander of the Regiment(consisting of 444 officers and men. Chosen from 5,000 volunteers) was Col. John James Scott-Chisholme, who led the unit at its first engagement, the Battle of Elandslaagte on 21 October 1899. During this battle two Victoria Crosses were awarded(to Capt. Eight men under Major Karri Davies of the ILH were the first to enter Mafeking on the night of 16/17 May 1900 to break the siege, followed up by the joint relief columns the following morning. 209 men who had been involved in Relief of Ladysmith and 33 who had been besieged there were in Mahoon's Column as were 420 men who had been in the Defence of Kimberley. In late 1900 a second battalion– the 2nd Imperial Light Horse(2 ILH) was formed. Under Major Duncan McKenzie. Both Regiments then went on to fight in the South African Republic and the Orange Free State Republic until the end of the war. A fourth Victoria Cross was awarded– to Surgeon Captain Thomas Jose
