Greetings. I am pleased to be able to offer this antique African Benin Kingdom tribal bronze/ brass leopard head which comes From Nigeria. Africa. This ... moreamazing Benin African leopard art piece measures 11.5 inches long x 6 inches wide x 4 inches high and is in great condition with slight wear. The Benin Kingdom was strong throughout the 15th and 16th Centuries and was located in West Africa bordering what is now Nigeria and Togo. Benin Clans were ruled by a King which was known as the Oba and who was the divine ruler of the Benin people. The people of Benin are called Bini and are descended from the Ife peoples. The making of these Benin bronzes were strictly considered court art and were made exclusively for the palace of the Oba and were designed to venerate the achievements and memories of the Obas and their Queens also called Iyobas or Queen Mothers who ruled throughout the time of the kingdom. The metalsmiths were very talented and used complex wax casting techniques which were far ahead of their time. Their work in bronze. Copper and iron was extremely refined and their methods of metal smelting, forging and lost wax methods exceeded any seen in Europe until the 19th century. Lost-wax casting sometimes called by the French name of cire perdue(from the Latin cera perduta) is the process by which a brass or bronze sculpture is cast from an artist's carving usually made from wax. Very intricate works can be achieved with this method, depending on the carver's skills. The majority of everyday Benin objects were made for and associated with court ceremonies. The figures of a leopard were the sole property of the oba– the leopard was the royal animal. perfect addition to any African art collection. Barbarian Tides. TimeFrame 1500-600 BC. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover: 175 pages. Publisher: Time-Life Books Inc; 1987) ISBN: 0809464047. The Time Frame series ... morewas released in the late 80's-early 90's. Each volume undertakes to describe the major events that happened in one specific time period in the development of mankind’s civilization(s) The volumes are richly illustrated. And designed as an introduction to the time frame covered. Especially compelling are the artists interpretations or recreations of what various ancient civilizations would have looked like– their architecture, homes, monuments, cities, daily life, jewelry, food, family life, dwellings, occupations, etc. As just one instance, the ruins of Babylon and Ur, Athens and Rome hint at the incredible richness of those fabled cities. The artist’s recreations in this series are simply mind-numbing. This is as close as you can be to actually having been there. The entire series is truly a magnificent introduction to the history of the era. If you could have just one book(or series of books) to introduce the history of humankind. This would have to be it. The overviews are concise and well-written. Together with the illustration and pictures they impart a wonderful mental and emotional“picture” of what life must have been like in various civilizations and at various times. Done in a style so wonderfully characteristic of Time-Life’s publications, these are over-sized“coffee table” type books full of impressive imagery. The pictures of the world’s greatest art and architecture alone are worth the cost of these books. But don’t get the impression that these volumes are“fluff” While a particular volume might not quite take the place as a university degree, the material is well-written, informative, and immensely intellectually gratifying, overview though it might be. This particular volume, Time-Frame 1500-600 B.C. is sub-titled“Barbarian Tides” The material is divided into a number of subjects which will give you an idea of the rich content; and i

Antique African BENIN Bronze Tribal Art Sculpture NIGERIAN Princess' Head Ref: BR220213 This is a large and impressive sculpture depicting a Benin ... morePrincess standing approximately 14 inches(35.5cm) high and weighing 3.9 kg. It was sculpted by hand and cast in bronze using the lost wax process. The people of Benin(now known as Nigeria) are descended from the Ife tribe and have been making bronzes in exactly the same way for many hundreds of years. I am not an expert; it is therefore quite difficult to date this piece accurately but I believe that it was probably made in the first half of the 20th century. Of course there is a distinct possibility that it could be considerably older. There are a few small holes here and there and a couple of larger ones on the head(see photos) There is also some oxidisation. Mainly on the face. Condition is otherwise good. P hotographs form a very important part of my description and therefore bidders are advised to study them carefully and to contact me for any additional information they may need. The Senufo is originated at Cote d I'voire. The Senufo are one of dominant cultures in Cote d'Ivoire. This mask is done by professional carvers ... moreknown to each village. This element is found in their ritual objects. This mask were used for ritual and other different important ceremonies. Thinly carved with elegant lines. The patina is very nice. Very good to excellent condition considering the age. The measurement is 17" h x 8" w. Senufo Kpelie Mask Kepelie Kpeli-yehe Ivory Coast and or Mali? Been told late 1800's or early 1900's A nice Senufo Kpelie mask with nice encrustation and wear. Great color. The horn-bill depicted on the top of the mask is one of the first creatures on earth in Senufo mythology- is an important symbol for the Senufo and appears on many of their carvings. I purchased this from an estate; I have consulted many local collectors and they have told me that this is late 1800's or early 1900's. They tell me that look at the age of the wood and you can tell this is an old primitive piece. I have no idea what is true regarding this item. Although it was always owned and worn by a man. Kpelie represented the concept of feminine beauty and fertility. The unique features which characterize the Kpelie mask include elongated flanges radiating from the bottom part of the mask. Which are a reference to the horn-bill bird. The horns on the mask refer to the ram, an important sacrificial animal. The Kpelie mask was used at initiation in the societies for boys. Adolescents, and adults, at funeral rituals designed to lead the spirit into the land of the dead, and at harvest festivals to thank the ancestors for a good crop. Kpelie- whether in carved wood or cast bronze copper alloy- are usually oval in shape with arched crescent shaped eyebrows over narrow slit eyes. The small mouth opens below a slender nose. Scarification marks add to presentation of what is considered beautiful to the Senufo. On either side of the temples are semicircular and rectangular shapes that represe

Gorgeous Benin Bronze Bust made using the traditional lost wax casting technique(I highly recommend viewing this for a precursory view of the technique) ... moreBenin Bronze heads have always been prized for their fine casting technique and realistic features. The art of making these heads dates back hundreds of years to when the Edo made them to adorn the royal palace and usually represent different royalty and high ranking members of society; this one more than likely representing a queen mother. This piece is particularly stunning and shows a wonderfully mastery of the casting technique. This bust measures about 7 inches tall by about 4 in wide making it a wonderful display piece. It is in excellent shape with normal aging and would be a great addition to any collection. Please email with any questions and please take at my other sales! Thanks for Looking!
