These molds are the only components that are ever re-used in the casting process. All other components are re-created for each casting. The Wax Positive Once the molds are done. The insides are coated with layers of wax. The halves are then bound together and wax poured inside to complete the wax image being created. Once the wax has cooled. The mold is peeled away, yielding a wax image(the wax positive" duplicating the original sculpture. This image must then be"touched-up" to remove any seam lines. African Bamoun / Bamileke Bronze Pipe #2
African pipes were made of different materials and in an endless variety of designs: terracotta. Stone, metal, gourds, horn, etc. They could be of very simple design, with bowl and stem made up of plain but no less graceful forms. Others were artfully decorated, adding a visual pleasure to the use of a cherished personal object or giving expression to differences in social status which such elaborate ornamentation implies. The number and variety of pipes was perhaps greater in Cameroon than anywhere else. Prestigious pipes had long stems because of the poor quality of African tobacco. Which is very strong. This is the reason why these pipes, which could have stems up to two meters long, were not actually used for smoking. Dignitaries would only touch their mouths to the stems during official ceremonies. The king's pipe was carried behind ... morehim by a servant. The decoration of pipes in Cameroon was regulated by a strict code: geometric patterns were good enough for the common man. But high‑ranking members of the brotherhoods could indulge in zoomorphic imagery, especially if the animals represented were related to their totems. Only the highest ranking chiefs and members of the royal family were allowed to have pipes with anthropomorphic motifs. The pipe shown here is outstanding in the meticulous details of the design. The bowl consists of the head of a nobleman and there are more detailed designs on the pipe stem. The pipe bowl is entirely made of bronze. It is a beautiful piece which has been well maintained and is in excellent condition! Size: 8" Long Materials: Bronze and Wood
AFRICAN ART. An exquisite Benin Bronze plaque in the form of a crocodile
AFRICAN ART. An exquisite Benin Bronze plaque in the form of a crocodile. 18-3/4 x 6-7/8 inches(47 x 17.2 cm) and, almost uniformly one centimeter thick. There are six holes, one at each corner, plus one on each side at the center. The“background” upon which the crocodile head appears bears a classic Benin design of a floral pattern with tiny dots. The entire work has a fine, smooth patina; the reverse, with a dusting of typical African red clay in the inner portions(see photographs) No date of origin was provided when this was purchased because no“core thermoluminecence” test could have been performed due to the thickness of the bronze-only 1 cm. Tentatively, and broadly dating this at 17 th to 19 th century. For a similar piece. See Paul Hamlyn’s Benin Art(London, 1960) No. 35, a plaque with the shape of a mudfish.

Antique African Snake Charmer / Killer Bronze Figurine
I got this from a guy who collected all kinds of offbeat and unusual things. He also had a lot of offbeat and unusual friends like me. He had traveled world wide. When we bartered and traded. He told me that this figurine was hand made, probably 150 years ago somewhere in the Congo. Why would an African spend his time- never mind- it's art! Worth the time! I originally thought it was a snake charmer but this guy seems to be choking the cobra. It's a small piece. He's 2" tall, 1/2" wide, 3/4" deep. I am happy to combine shipping whenever possible. It is not my intent to make a profit on shipping. Neither is it my intention to lose money. Please be aware that with recent postal service changes, packages that hit certain weights make more sense to ship via priority mail. Should you win bids on 2 or more items, I will ... morecalculate the shipping costs and service to you, and at times, send you a message if there are multiple options at different price points which might make sense to you before I send an invoice. Please do not make payment for your bids before this takes place, because I cannot change the charges once this happens. Information for international bidders. When deciding to bid on this item please send a message requesting what the estimated shipping cost will be. This policy protects both you and me. Neither of us likes surprises. For example. You may win a bid for 99 cents, then find out the weight plus your country destination creates a shipping cost of $60.00 USD which may be totally unreasonable to you but very reasonable to the Postal Service. Please also note that any import fees or duties are your responsibility. Thank you for reviewing what I have to sell and I look forward to doing business with you. 2 MBOLE BRONZE CURRENCY - OLD AFRICAN MONEY - CONGO
2 Mbole Currency- DROC Metal was highly valued throughout Africa. And, as with most African metal items, pieces that were originally created for an entirely different purpose became viewed as wealth over time and then used as currency in trade for a wide variety of items- the metal could always be smelted down to reform into a more desirable or needed object. Most African tribes used a wide array of metal rings in varying sizes and shapes for adornment and primitive money. While records show that copper rings functioned as currency in Takrur in 1068 A.D. it is commonly believed that copper ingots were mined in the Katanga region as early as the 9th century, and the first appearance of heavy copper bracelets was recorded during the 8th century. Bracelets, often referred to as'ring money' served as a medium of early exchange in addition ... moreto ornamentation- a convenient way to transport wealth was to wear it as a show of prestige and power. The two main techniques for producing the rings or bracelets were drawing wire to forge or form the shape, and casting, and the pieces could easily be melted down(smelted) at another location and then reformed as desired. The use of imported copper and brass bangles or'manilas' dates back to 1439, when the Portuguese ordered their production from Venice for trade in Africa. The manilas continually grew smaller over time, and their metal content changed from solid copper to brass, and then to highly leaded brass until the importation and use of manilas was prohibited during the early 1900's when the British government sought to establish their own currency and therefore forbade the use of any other. The'native' currency(or primitive money) that was buried as a result of that British decree was not excavated until much later, and is now surfacing into the current market as art. This fine pair measure 4.5 inches tall and 4.5 inches wide.

The famous royal center of Benin in Nigeria produced a number of remarkable objects and bronze heads cast in bronze including the original of this 20th century copy that was also cast in Nigeria. Benin City was the center of power for the Edo people and the place of residence for the Oba. The ruler. This bronze cast head is of the Queen Mother, who was the mother of the Oba, the ruler at Benin, who still rules today. This head is modeled after a cast bronze original and is shown on a well decorated base. Her large headdress was composed of a network of precious coral beadwork. Her hairstyle is presented with complex curls and braids. It is a well sculpted figure marked by the fine detailing of the face, hair and crown and a high degree of naturalism uncommon in African sculpture. Facial markings under and between the eyes are lightly worked onto the surface of the face, That this is a replica cannot be doubted, but what is important to note is that the skill of the Nigerian bronze and brass casters of today who cast this head continue a tradition nearly 500 years old at Benin and have not lost their skill in producing interesting works of art. This is a head of an Oba based upon a 14th-15th century original and is a stylized portrait of a man at the Court of Benin. That this is a replica cannot be doubted. But what is important to note is that the skill of the Nigerian bronze and brass casters of today who cast this head continue a tradition nearly 500 years old at Benin and have not lost their skill in producing interesting works of art. Benin heads were kept on altars. The hole in the head was to support an ivory tusk. Intricately carved. For exquisite examples of heds, and an article on them. Benin art is royal art, made to glorify the great king, or OBA, who is considered to have divine ancestry. The brasscasters guild historically worked primarily for the monarchy, with smaller pieces being available to chiefs. It has been in existence since the fifteenth or sixteenth century. Most castings are brass(an alloy of copper and zinc with tra

Old Lobi or Dian African Bronze Fetish-Burkina Faso
Old LOBI or DIAN Bronze Divination Ancestors- AFRICA An exceptional Lobi(or Dian) bronze altar piece in the shape of a bangle surmounted by a male and a female figure executed fully in the round and representing ancestor figures. The Dian and the Lobi are distant relatives. And many of their beliefs and practices, as well as artistic expression share similarities. The circular portion of the piece could represent the serpent as it figures strongly in Lobi superstition; two chameleons are depicted. One perched at either side. The chameleon holds a place of importance in Lobi(and Dian) myth as this mystical animal is, together with the serpent, the reason for man's immortality. This piece was not intended for wear as seated figures are specifically used in divination. And forms part of the paraphernalia placed at the ancestor altar particular ... moreto each dwelling or village, it served as a medium to consult the ancestors in the world beyond. Old Senoufo Senufo African Pipe Bronze Chameleon Rare
Rare Old African Bronze Pipe with Chameleon Senoufo Senufo A very old and rare Senoufo Senufo bronze pipe bowl. Surmounted by a chameleon. This old pipe bowl was likely used by an elder; the chameleon is considered a powerful amulet that indicated the alliance of its user to this totemic animal and its relation to the myths of creation. There exists a great variety of representations of the chameleon by the Senoufo; due to its physically mutating nature. The chameleon's tremendous facility of adaptability to its surroundings and predators it is also considered to be a symbol of wisdom. Its capacity of wide angle view also endows it with amazing powers; it is forbidden to kill a chameleon. Even involuntarily. Possessing a suspension loop this pipe bowl could be worn around the neck and fitted with a reed when smoked. Evidence of extensive ... moreusage as heavy encrustations of tobacco on the interior of the bowl. Created using by the lost wax process by hand-shaping up the model in wax and then casting it.
