The Mende people are indigenous to Sierra Leone and Liberia. And number nearly 2 million strong. Governed by a series of internal political groups, as ... morewell as socially indispensable secret societies, the Mende are both farmers and fishermen who are nearly 2 million in number. Rice, yams, cacao, cassava, palm oil, peanuts, and other crops make up a subsistence and market economy, and palms are also used to create palm wine and palm distillates, popular drinks among the people. One of the most famous of all African masks, the Mende Sowo helmet masks of the Sande Society are known in African art circles across the world. They are unique due to the fact that in Africa, they are one of and perhaps THE only masks controlled and danced exclusively by women. The Sande society controls the social and political concerns of women in the region, which includes Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Liberia. They are known to practice genital mutilation of their initiates, and are fiercely protective of the secretive nature of the society. Typically worn on top of the head, or on and around the head like a helmet, these masks are said to be representations of the idealized female form, and traditionally display a number of symbolic features. The eyes are in a downcast gaze symbolizing modesty, and the facial features are small and centralized, including the eyes, mouth, and nose. Elaborate hairstyling is common, and is finely detailed in this mask. Scarification marks are common, and present on this piece on the forehead. The dark patina is said to represent female mystery. This mask is a beautiful example, with a very rich, deep chocolate brown patina, and finely rendered carving details. The coiffure is exquisite, tall and elegant, tapering toward its top and terminating in three parallel ridges, a well documented Bundu motif, the upper-most splaying into an upper crest. It demonstrates normal aging signs, and standard dings, rubs, and scratches from handling and exposure, but no serious damage, breaks, or repairs. Please examine the p

Old Senoufo Senufo African Bronze Figure Divination-Ivory Coast
Old Senoufo Bronze Divination Figure Ivory Coast Africa An very old tribally used Senoufo bronze figural amulet. The figure possesses no obvious sexual attributes; all projecting surfaces have obtained a superb patina of usage resulting from age and wear. This piece possesses all of the attributes of an object that would have formed part of the diviner's paraphernalia. This due to the excessive overall wear, unlike the specific localized wear of objects worn as amulets. The overall patina of wear of this figure may be largely explained as resulting from permanent rubbing and abrasion against other objects contained in the diviner's pouch or in the diviner's terracotta vessel where objects for his divination are kept; just the mere shifting around of metal and other objects against each and against the wall of the pot would result ... morein such an overall and smooth patina. Amulet of various types are ordered by the diviner and are intended to protect its wearer against various types of dangers that he or she may encounter. Small amulets are also prepared for children so as to protect them against various diseases and illnesses.Amulets that are worn may later serve in divination as this is decided by the diviner. NOTE: Please see a similar piece in Bronzes et autres alliages by André Blandin in the 1988 and 2000 editions. As well as in La collection actualisée Galerie Maine Durieu-Paris(2009) Excellent patina of age and usage. Encrustations, vert-de-gris- Collected in Burkina Faso. Old Lobi African Bronze Pendant Amulet Chameleons-Burkina Faso
Old Lobi Bronze Amulet Pendant of Two Chameleons Burkina Faso Africa An old and used Lobi bronze amulet pendant of two chameleons. The chameleon is appreciated as a symbol of protection as is admired for its intelligence as it has a tremendous capacity to camouflage itself in its surroundings. And possesses all round vision. It is said to protects its wearer against various illnesses. Smaller examples of brass chameleons are worn by children starting at a very young age. Chameleons represented in a mating or copulating position are intended to be worn suspended around the neck by both men and women and are said to serve as an amulet that will assure the birth of children. Cast by the lost wax method whereby a model is hand-shaped in beeswax. The model is then encased in clay; once cast the mold is destroyed making each piece unique and an ... moreoriginal. NOTE: To view a similar piece. Please refer to: André Blandin's"Afrique de l'ouest- Bronzes et autres alliages" 2000) The amulet is adorned in superb detail with one smooth side and is unusual for its small size. Ancestral spirits are embodied in the skulls of deceased ancestors. Skulls of ancestors are kept to give the spirits a place to reside to prevent them from causing trouble for the family. If a skull is not kept, a ceremony must be done to compensate. Much of the art produced by the Bamileke tribe is associated with royal ceremonies. Art objects show the position of a person in the tribal hierarchy. As a person descended or ascended the social ladder, the materials used and the number of pieces changed. In a chief’s residence one would find ancestral figures and masks, as well as headdresses, bracelets, beaded thrones, pipes, necklaces, swords, horns, fans, elephant tusks, leopard skins, terracotta pots, and dishware. All of this was used to assert the chief’s power. Beadwork and masks are common in this tribe. Masks were decorated with copper, cowrie shells, and beads. This type of ring is not intended to be worn, but is brought to the diviner by the person consulting him, it is not uncommon that the fetisher may tell his client that he must carry out a particular type of sacrifice to the chameleon in order to resolve his problem. Tribal African Antique Tuareg Delicate cast bronze bracelet
Unique Antique(circa mid- late 1800s) Delicate Cast Bronze Tuareg Bracelet From the old private collection. This is a rare. Museum quality authentic artifact. The item is about 2 3/2" x3" and 2 1/2 inner with 1 1/4 opening in excellent antique condition. The basic method of lost-wax casting has been widely practiced on the African continent for centuries. While it is difficult to establish how the method was developed or introduced to the region. It is clear that West African sculptors were casting brass with this method for several hundred years prior to the arrival of the first Portuguese explorers along the coast in 1484. The technique requires a great deal of skill, involving extensive knowledge of both pottery and metalworking, and a careful attention to changing temperatures to prevent unwanted cracking or other damage to ... moreeither the clay mold or to the metal sculpture during the casting process. Some of the earliest and most accomplished bronzeworks found in Africa date to the tenth century and are from a site called Igbo-Ukwu. Bronze pieces created by the lost wax method involves creating a model in beeswax. Once completed. Wax rods are attached to it and the entire model is encased in layers of fine clay. The structure is heated and the melted wax runs out through the channels or wax rods, molten metal is poured into the mold, created after wax was lost- the metal cools and hardens, the mold is broken and the piece has been created. Antique Cast Bronze African Tribal Rare Dogon Akan Figurative ring
Fine Ashanti Antique(circa late 1800s) Cast Bronze Gold weight. From the old private collection of the internationally celebrated artist and ardent Africanist. This is a rare. Museum quality authentic artifact(circa late 1800s) representing a Figurative ring. The item is about 1 1/4" high. Size 8" in excellent antique condition. Dogon art is extremely versatile. Although common stylistic characteristics– such as a tendency towards stylization– are apparent on the statues. Their art deals with the myths whose complex ensemble regulates the life of the individual. The sculptures are preserved in innumerable sites of worship, personal or family altars, altars for rain, altars to protect hunters, in market. As a general characterization of Dogon statues, one could say that they render the human body in a simplified way, reducing it ... moreto its essentials. Some are extremely elongated with emphasis on geometric forms. The subjective impression is one of immobility with a mysterious sense of a solemn gravity and serene majesty, although conveying at the same time a latent movement. Dogon sculpture recreates the hermaphroditic silhouettes of the Tellem, featuring raised arms and a thick patina made of blood and millet beer. The four Nommo couples, the mythical ancestors born of the god Amma, ornament stools, pillars or men’s meeting houses, door locks, and granary doors. The primordial couple is represented sitting on a stool, the base of which depicts the earth while the upper surface represents the sky; the two are interconnected by the Nommo. Horsemen are remainders of the fact that, according to myth, the horse was the first animal present on earth. The Dogon style has evolved into a kind of cubism: ovoid head, squared shoulders, tapered extremities, pointed breasts, forearms, and thighs on a parallel plane, hairdos stylized by three or four incised lines. Dogon sculptures serve as a physical medium in initiations and as an explanation of the world. They serve to transmit an understanding to the initiated, who

The mold is then heated, which melts the wax and fires the clay into a solid mold. The empty space is filled by pouring in molten brass. Vintage 19thC Animal & Erotic West African Bronze Gold Weights
VINTAGE AKAN GOLD WEIGHTS A casual primitive practical tool of the trade. Akan(Ashanti) goldweights were used as a measuring system by the Akan tribes of West Africa. For weighing gold dust the currency until replaced by paper money in the late 19th C. These three are made of bronze. Used to weigh gold dust. They usually represented everyday objects. Attitudes toward erotic themes were casual without pornographic overtones. The copulating couple here is of a better artistic interpretation but there are some even more realistic. Based on the Islamic ounce. Each weight had a known measurement. The skill involved in casting weights was enormous(lost wax technique) As most weights were less than two(Muslim) ounces. They were a standard of measure to be used in trade. And had to be accurate to provide secure fair-trade arrangements between merchants. ... moreA man’s status increased if he owned a complete set of weights. Often a set was given to a newly wedded man to guarantee that he’d be able to enter trade respectably. Early weights display bold. But simple, artistic designs. Later weights developed into beautiful works of art with fine details. However. By the 1890s the quality of both design and material was very poor. And with the abandonment of commercial use. The weights quickly developed into a growing endeavor to satisfy the tourist demand and were not as carefully detailed as those which we have here. In addition to the erotic couple there is an anteater and a crocodile whose tail has been trimmed to adjust for weight correction.

The Benin Kingdom was founded by the son of an Ife king around 1300. But it was not until the 15th/16thC that the kingdom reached its zenith. Sometime in the 15thC, members of the kingdom made contact with Portuguese traders living along the coast, and it is likely that some of the skills found in their metalworks were learned from these interactions. The originals of these castings date to the 12th to 15th centuries and are worth millions of dollars. The present day inhabitants, Edo

Although mechanization has facilitated the lost wax process of bronze casting. The procedure is basically the same as that used by the Chinese when they first developed the process in the 2nd millennium BC. The Rubber Mold First the artist creates an original sculpture out of any number of media. Including stone, wax, clay, wood and pottery. This image is coated with a silicone rubber molding material that makes two rubber mold halves(each rubber mold has a front and a back piece) A fiberglass outer shell is added to the back of each mold so it retains its shape and rigidity during subsequent uses. These molds are the only components that are ever re-used in the casting process. All other components are re-created for each casting. The Wax Positive Once the molds are done. The insides are coated with layers of wax. The halves are then bound together and wax poured inside to complete the wax image being created. Once the wax has cooled. The mold is peeled away, yielding a wax image(the wax positive" duplicating the original sculpture. This

Ethnic Design Necklace/African Gan Bronze Snake Pendant, "Opal" Beads
I am listing an ethnic design necklace that I created. Made with a vintage African bronze pendant from the Gan people in Barkina Faso. Snake imagery is central to their religion and mythology, and this 3 headed one is strung on beautiful multi-colored beads. Which I bought as"opal" beads. Each bead has a different and I think exquisite color, but I can't tell you anything more about them except that the seller, who doesn't know where they come from, insists they are actually opal. Pendant is made in the lost wax casting technique. Each piece unique and made individually. Necklace: 21" around; Pendant 2 3/4" L with nice patina; Gold plated toggle clasp. I have been very interested in older. Vintage African bronze pieces to string on necklaces, but the prices have been going up and they are getting harder to find. ... moreSo now is the time to buy one if you like them! Please watch my site for other necklaces I will be listing. That I have designed with vintage, Pre-Columbian, gemstone, and trade beads, strung with ethnic and antique pendants, fishing lures, those of my own design and castings, and other funky, fun and interesting things I find on my flea market adventure. BACKGROUND The powerful ... moreancient Benin kingdom was founded by the son of an Ife king in the early 14th century AD. It was situated in the forest area of southern Nigeria. The art of bronze casting was introduced around the year 1280. The kingdom reached its maximum size and artistic splendor in the 15th and 16th century. For a long time the Benin bronze sculptures were the only historical evidence dating back several centuries into the West African past. And both the level of technical accomplishment attained in bronze casting, as well as the monumental vigor of the figures represented, were the object of great admiration. Benin bronzes are better known than the artworks from Ife or Owo due to their presence in Western museums since 1890s. In the thirteenth century, the city of Benin was an agglomeration of farms enclosed by walls and a ditch. Each clan was subject to the Oba(king) The“Benin style” is a court art from the palace of the Oba, and has nothing in common with tribal art. The Benin Oba employed a guild of artisans who all lived in the same district of the city. Bronze figures ordered by the king were kept in the palace. The empire flourished until 1897, when the palace was sacked by the
