Antique African Sword and Axe Interesting African weapons/tools. The sword is made from iron with a wood handle wrapped with metal. I'm thinking copper. ... moreThe handle of the axe is nicely carved. Although I'm not sure what it's made from. The sword measures 21.5 inches by 3.25 inches. The axe measures 15 inches by 7.5 inches. I bought both at an auction recently. The previous owner was a collector of African art and antiquities. I don't know when these were made or the region in Africa they came from. If you have any other questions, please ask and I do combine shipping.

Lost to legs, cracks, chips, overall condition good. Thank you and please view my other items. BACKGROUND Komaland is located south of Burkina Faso border in Northern Ghana. In the valleys between Sisilli and the Kulpawan rivers. The people of Komaland are mainly farmers, growing corn, millet, onions, tomatoes, and various types of nuts. Until 1985 very little was known about this mysterious culture. The previous 20 years farmers have found terracottas in the ground, but knew nothing of their history. Their value was soon recognized by scholars. In March and April of 1985 a permit was issued to excavate the Komaland site. Since then more information about this unique culture has filtered out. The present-day village is built around and on numerous archaeological sites. Many of the pieces found today and in the past 30 years were found in burial mounds; the mounds contained terracotta figures, domestic pottery, milling stones, pottery discs, iron ornaments, copper ornaments, iron implements and stone axes. A custom base is included with this piece. It is important to properly exhibit a beautiful piece of art. The splendor of the piece cannot be fully revealed without a correct display. Custom bases can cost a minimum of thirty and up to several hundred dollars depending on its complexity and size. It is very difficult to locate a good stand maker regardless of price. But fortunately this piece will be appropriately displayed and ready for you and your guests’ enjoyment. Painter Fred U

The field of Sahara Neolithic Artifacts was expanded by the advent of GPS technology for meteorite hunters in the Sahara Desert. Thousands of years ago North Africa was a temperate environment similar to our own Great Plains. Countless generations of Stone-Age Man lived. Hunted, fought and died there, leaving behind their weapons and tools. Today, North Africa consists largely of the Sahara Desert, an inhospitable area almost the size of the United States. Constantly shifting sands and the ability to now safely travel off of established trade routes have expanded this fascinating field of study by making these artifacts available to scholars and collectors around the world. African Congo Songye Axe with Hand Forged Blade and Copper Plated Handle
These axes were carried by the Songye tribal people of the Democratic Republic of Congo in Africa circa 1880 to 1920. These were quite capable of being used for personal defense. However the primary use was not as a weapon but as status symbols of standing, prestige, occupation or affiliation. This is an excellent example with a hand forged axe head and copper cladded wooden handle with very intricate hand tooling. The steel shows rust and light pitting commensurate with age. The copper cladding has a nice even patina. This makes a great display or collector piece due to it's compact size and light weight. Specifications: Handle Length: 13" Handle Material: Copper cladded wood. Axe Head: Protrudes 6" from handle with a 3.5" width at blade edge.

African Loop Dagger Niger(?) Knife Spear Sword Axe Vintage Old
This is. To my knowledge, an African loop dagger, from Niger. There is one pictured in Christopher Spring's'African Arms and Armour' on pg. 43. It's similarity lies in the loop handle, and the basic design, the dagger pictured has a much different blade. There are lines incised in the handle on one side only, I can only assume that this is meant to be the top, otherwise they would not be seen. OAL-15 3/4" Handle-3 3/4" Blade-12" Handle inside dimension is 1 1/2" blade width at ricasso is 2 1/8" Blade at the tip is 1/4" Weight is approx. 2 lbs. See above and pictures for condition. MOZAMBIQUE ☆ ANTIQUE SHONA AXE ☆ AFRICAN ETHNIC TRIBAL
The item I am selling today is an antique SHONA axe It was brought some decades ago from Mozambique by a portuguese officer who served the portuguese army during the colonial war The blade is iron made and the club is in noble wood. Both have interesting encarved symbols. The club(38 cm) have also a very beautifull wattled thread(possibly cooper) work at the top and bottom. Condition- I have inserted several pictures for your evaluation. Take a good look prior your final decision.Thank you The Shona are a cluster of peoples who have lived for about 2.000 years in a region of the southern Africa Plateau. Shona speaking migrants of the late 1800s also live in Zambia, in the Zambezi valley, in Chieftainess Chiawa's area. The Shona are the builders of Great Zimbabwe. Which is the largest stone Structure of pre-colonial Africa south of the ... moreequator. The word Zimbabwe literally means"stone dwelling" in the Shona language. Thus. Great Zimbabwe is appropriately named because it is indeed a great stone dwelling. The Torwa State and Munhumutapa states which succeeded the Great Zimbabwe state as well as the Rozvi state which succeeded the Torwa State and with the Mutapa state existed into the 19th century. The states were based on Kingship with certain dynasties being royals. The Kingdoms were destroyed by new groups moving onto the plateau. The Ndebele destroyed the Rozvi state in the 1830's and the Portuguese slowly eroded the Mutapa State which had extended to the coast of Mozambique. The British destroyed the traditional power in the 1890 and colonised the plateau which the named Rhodesia. In Mozambique the Portuguese colonial government fought the remnants of the Mutapa state until 1902. I am selling this in used as found condition. Before your final decision please take a good look to the many pictures I have inserted for your appreciation NOTE: Purchase shall be send via REGISTERED MAIL- HAND DELIVERY- TRACEABLE. Nice Paleolithic Acheulean Early Man Axe, Tool, Prehistoric African Artifact
LOWER PALEOLITHIC(ACHEULEAN) EARLY MAN HAND AXE. The term Paleolithic was coined by archaeologist John Lubbock in 1865. It derives from the Greek palaios(old) and lithos(stone) Meaning O ld Stone Age, compared to the later Neo-lithic or New Stone Age. The Paleolithic Era is divided into 3 ages. The Upper(10,000 to 50,000 BP) Middle( 30.000 to 300,000 BP) and Lower(up to 2 million years ago) It is in the Lower Paleolithic that we find the Acheulean Tradition, which covers a time span of from 100.000 to over 1 million years before our present time. Surviving artifacts of this period are known as paleoliths and were manufactured by early hominids. From Homo habilis and Homo erectus to early Neanderthal, all predecessors of our species, Homo sapiens. RARE OLD AFRICAN CEREMONIAL AXE ATTRIBUTED TO CHOKWE or LUBA - ZAIRE/D.R. Congo
I purchased this axe from a trader at Kisangani market in Zaire(now renamed Democratic Republic of Congo) in 1987. Kisangani market was one of the busiest markets I have encountered in Africa. You could buy there anything you wanted to(and much more you did not) That was the only time I have seen a tribal axe being offered for sale and that was probably because it was damaged. Elaborately handcrafted axes are worn over the shoulder by important Luba tribesmen as symbols of status and power. The fact that the blades of such axes are blunt indicates that they were not meant to be used as weapons but as emblems of prestige. The ceremonial axe has been used for centuries by the Luba people much as a king's scepter in other cultures. Similar axes were also used by Chokwe in south western part of Zaire. The haft part of this axe looks very ... moremuch like the Chokwe haft. The axe's haft is made of one piece of light colored wood. Considerably darkened by age patina, with the top and bottom part stained black. The blade is made of iron which was already rusted when I bought it. I have made no attempt to clean it, since it has been in my possession. There is a little movement to the blade in the haft, most likely because of the missing bit of wood at the top of the blade. The first 7 photos were taken in daylight and the remaining, in artificial light. Dimensions:16 ½" 41 cm) length. 8" 20.5 cm) width(measured at the widest point) During the time I worked and lived in Liberia I started collecting African art. Both traditional and contemporary, I continued enlarging my collection when, few years later, I returned to work in Africa, in Zaire. I collected these items for their decorative value and can not vouch that they were actually used in rituals, that did not interest me. All such items, which I am selling now on Ebay, were either purchased by me or received as gifts from my coworkers or missionaries I worked with while in Africa. The authenticity of items used in tribal rituals is notoriously difficul
