While their primary medium for metalworking is brass, they also occasionally use bronze and iron. This axe with its elegant blade and hadle is an interesting example of their metalworking skills, and demonstrates the Akan penchant for adding symbols to their artworks. The shape of the blade indicatesthe statuts and function of the holder and obviously had significance to the blacksmith who made it. Akan ceremonial objects. Prehistoric Neolithic Paleolithic Stone Hand Axe Handaxe Africa African
This listing is for an authentic Prehistoric African Paleolithic Hand Axe. I acquired this ancient hand axe at the Gem& Mineral show a few years ago. The dealer specialized in African archaeological artifacts and informed me it was African and from the Paleolithic period, I wish I was able to get more info but he was short on time as the Gem show was closing up as it was the last day. He had an assortment of hand axes and I hand picked the best one in his collection, I've had this for a few years, it's a very nice piece, very heavy with a smooth surface. Thank you for watching! This item is heavy but I'm offering free USA shipping. I do not have international listed. Please contact me if you are international and I will see the individual rates for your country thank you.

The well patinated wooden haft is slightly arched with a head that turns back away from and parallel to the blade to carry the tang. The end of which is at the back tip, upset(peened) to lock the blade in place. Circular depressions decorate the head of the haft and a pair are also present at the far end of the haft just before it concentrically widens. This end of the haft features a hole at the end that likely once carried material such as hair or other decoration. The axe blade exits the haft with a round cross-section upon which are three pair of inscribed rings. The blade then flattens and shows engraved decoration on either face. A forging flaw is noted on one blade face and resharpening of the edge is suggested by imperfections in the curved cutting edge; a grain related defect is also seen on the underside of the head of the haft- ... morethe defects, all in all minor and not distracting, also comfort in marking this as an old handmade implement that has seen use. Lew assigned this to the Tschokwe culture, circa 1890. The haft is 15 inches in length, with the turn back adding 3½ inches. The blade extends 6 inches from the haft at a mildly acute angle. Overall weight is 10 ounces. This item is from the estate sale of the ethnographic arms collection of Lewis Waldman FOR ALL BIDDERS: Before bidding. Original African Tschwana or Zulu Tribe Iron Axe, Late 19th Century
A nicely patinated dark wooden haft is wrapped with tightly woven brass wire for much of its length and measures 24½ inches in length. The tang of the blade penetrates the widened head of the haft at an angle just obtuse of perpendicular and appears to have been upset(peened) to lock it into place. The neck of the axe blade is rectangular in cross section and 3¾ inches long with triangular and diamond shapes delineated by coarse cross-hatching. The blade abruptly expands to 7¼ inches in length just off parallel to the haft and has a reasonably symmetrical curved cutting edge. There are old cracks on one side of the head and minor defects in the wood and woven brass wire at the grip end of the haft. Lew attributed this to the Shona or Zulu culture. Circa 1880s. African Vende Tribe Small Axe. Circa 1900 This small axe has a 15¾ inch long haft. Tapering wider at the handle end and also as it approached the carved head. The wood has a nice dark patina with pleasing traces of the hand work employed in its creation. The curved blade has an about 1 inch curved edge and extends 5¾ inches from from the haft on the wider side and for 4¼ inches in a curve on the opposite side. Lew assigned this example to the Vende culture and dated it circa 1900. Overall weight is 6.8 ounces. Authentic African Songye (Songe) Iron Axe with Copper-Clad Haft
African Songye(Songe) Axe with Copper-Clad Haft An elaborately decorated hatchet(hand axe) most likely intended as a mark of status or for monetary use. Rather than combat, and with features characteristic of the Songye culture. Dated by Lew as circa 1890 this example features a blade with raised non-edge sides, multiple perforations, engravings and a copper inlay on each face. The haft is entirely clad with sheet copper, flat to presumed underlying wood in most places, but as a spiral wrapped strip in the area of the grip. The blade is very slightly loose in its setting and its tang is folded over at the back of the haft. From the insertion into the haft the blade is 6¼ inches(16 cm. long with an arced edge 5¾ inches(14.5 cm. long. The haft is about 17¼ inches(44 cm. long. Weight is 20 ounces. Quality Paleolithic Acheulean Early Man Axe, Tool, Prehistoric African Artifact
LOWER PALEOLITHIC(ACHEULEAN) EARLY MAN HAND AXE. The term Paleolithic was coined by archaeologist John Lubbock in 1865. It derives from the Greek palaios(old) and lithos(stone) Meaning O ld Stone Age, compared to the later Neo-lithic or New Stone Age. The Paleolithic Era is divided into 3 ages. The Upper(10,000 to 50,000 BP) Middle( 30.000 to 300,000 BP) and Lower(up to 2 million years ago) It is in the Lower Paleolithic that we find the Acheulean Tradition, which covers a time span of from 100.000 to over 1 million years before our present time. Surviving artifacts of this period are known as paleoliths and were manufactured by early hominids. From Homo habilis and Homo erectus to early Neanderthal, all predecessors of our species, Homo sapiens. To hold one of these very ancient artifacts in your hand, to know that it was made hundreds of ... morethousands of years ago by a primitive human species to aid in daily survival, is truly a humbling experience and a direct connection to our far distant past. No one knows exactly how many of these incredible artifacts actually exist or will ever be discovered, but one thing is certain. they are wonderful collectible artifacts while they are available! This piece is 4.25" long. 2" wide, a little over 1" thick, and weighs 7 ounces. It has an ancient broken tip and is otherwise in excellent condition with a beautiful patina.
