Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, general wear, Additional Information: This is an example a Kuba Bushoong Moshambwooy mask. Variants of such a mask are also found among thr the Ngoongo. Sub-group of Kuba people, where they are known as Mukyeem or mukenga mask. For a long time people used to call this type of masks moshambwooy. But there is a substantial difference between these two masks. Examples of Royal Moshambwooy mu Shall are very rare to find. Most of the s o-called Moshambwooy housed by public or private collections are of Ngongo workmanship type named Mukyeem mask. They all are helmet masks and decorated with a lot of cowrie shells and beads. On Mukyeem mask. The headdress is extended by a long, central, trunk-like appendage(sometimes with two offshoots) suggesting the elephant's tusk. Attached to the end of the trunk is raffia fibers, which can be replaced by a bright red, tuft of parrot feathers. Moshambwooy is usually topped with a high structure decorated with feathers. There is no elephant tusk-like on moshambwooy(see examples on Face of Spirits) The greatest of the three"most significant" masks of the BaKuba. Among the Namchi people of Cameroon, unadorned dolls made by blacksmiths are played with by young children. When beads, cowrie shells, bells, coins, and other ornaments are added, however, the doll becomes a surrogate baby for a woman who is having difficulty getting pregnant. The woman treats the figure like a baby, feeding it and carrying it on her back. The Namchi/Namchi group lives in the north west of Cameroon and is famous for its geometrical carved and highly decorated dolls. The girls learn their motherly duties by playing with them. Usually they always carry the dolls around with them. Feeding them and telling them stories from the old ones before going to bed. Condition: Good condition considering previous owner has written on bottom 100+ years. Also marked on tape on base is namji doll, cameroon. I am not sure of the exact age but I do not believe the use of Brass chain has been done for many years. Approximately 8 1/2" wide x" 9 1/2" tall.With the woven straw or jute adjustable belt about 34"Perhaps a Puberty Apron due to size. The dark spaces you see on the apron are just jute.I am not sure if that is just part of the design or a missing bead but there are no breaks in the body of the apron. Antique primitive African Bamana Mali? carving of man. Fertility idol?
I bought this figure at an estate sale along with a few others I have listed separately. The man I bought them from said his grandparents had acquired them while in Africa in the fifties. True or not I don't know. This figure is very old and I have tried to take ample pics to it's condition. It looks like it could be a fertility statue as it is anatomically correct for a male figure. There is a white substance on the base. It looks like paint but I was afraid to remove it. Please ask any questions and I will do my best to answer them. I am not am expert in this area. Antique primitive African Bamana Mali door lock.
I found this carving at an estate sale. Thanks to a viewer I now know that this is a Door lock made by the Bamana people in Africa. Known as Kunbarabara these locks were once given to young women when they married and put on their new homes. These locks are among the most remarkable of all African art. The man I bought it from said that it had belonged to his grandparents who were missionaries in Africa in the fifties. It measures 17 inches tall and is 15 1/2 inches wide. There is a metal nail. Antique African Iron Hoe With Thick, Green Patina/Djenne, Mali Excavation?
Antique African hoe with very old blue green patina. Hoes were very valued in farming areas of Africa due to their relationship to agriculture. I don't have much information about this piece that came from the collector below. But some of the things I bought from the estate had been excavated from Djenne sites near Mali on the Niger river. This piece has a very thick, wonderful patina, that looks like it had been buried for a long time. This is a simple but truely beautiful object! Item came from the very large estate of African art that belonged to a long time Santa Fe collector and dealer who bought many of his things in the 1960's and 1970's when he had a gallery in Santa Fe. Fresh from a local estate is this vintage photo of an African American family posing in a rocky gorge. The photo measures approx. 11 x 14 with an image area of approx. 7 1/2 x 9 1/2. The photo backing board has major damage but the image area is pretty good. There are some cracks under the photo and some blemishes in spots on top but overall the image area is very nice and could produce a very handsome and useful digital file. ANTIQUE AFRICAN HARD PETRIFIED LEATHER TRIBAL VASE the vase was acquired through a estate art storage auction of west African artifacts and other antiques. i know very little of African art. the vase. I am not relay shore it is a vase but we will just call it that. it stands at 17 1/2 inches tall and 29 inches round at its widest point. it comes with 2 rings one on witch it sits on and the other on its neck. there appear to be small metal pins or dots in it. the vase itself is made of some hard petrified leather. there are small carvings on it of what looks like a sun and other images i cant make out. there is some form of stitching on the neck made of leather of a different kind. it has a leather strap with some fur of the animal going around the base and has been petrified to the base. It then comes over the top to form a handle. it has ... moresome weight to it. 3 to 5 pounds. this vase is very old and has seen a great deal of use. it is covered with markings and signs of usage and repairs over its life time as most things its age would have. its old i never seen anything like it before. no reserve price. This reliquary was placed with his remains to guard from mischieveous spirits as well as grave robbers. Often rodents got into the grave and gnawed on the bones and on the reliquary. Where they gnawed can be seen on the wood portion of the reliquary. A very beautiful item with a wonderful history and patina. I obtained this piece from a woman whose husband and her traveled extensively in Africa. Actually living with the tribes at times. The couple collected a good number of pieces through the years. Large metal water carrier pot African or Middle/Far Eastern antique copper
This is a beautiful old metal water vessel. Probably from(southern? Africa but maybe the Middle East. Or India. I think it is copper but I am not 100% certain. I have not attempted to polish it with metal polish- I believe that only an expert in such things should attempt this as I don't want to cause any damage. I have no idea how old it is. But I guess it could be at least 50 years old, but I have put it as p ost-1940 as I do not know for certain. It is about 10"250mm high and at its widest point it is about 9"230mm in diameter. It is probably a water carrier. But might have been used for heating water. It couldn't be used for cooking as its opening is too small. It has a small ring/loop on each side of its hinged lid that probably once had a leather cord through so it could be carried. It has clearly once upon a time ... morebeen used for its original purpose and it is sli ghtly rusty. But this a dd s to its attraction.

Antique/Vintage Ethiopian/African Leather Shield Battle/Hunting/Ceremonial
18 1/2" diameter. 6" deep. I picked this up out of the same estate as my Abercrombie and Frintz bocce ball set and the estate was loaded with old stuff. Outside display side of the shield is in very nice condition and has designs in the thick leather/hide. The back side has wear and looks rather bug eaten to the secondary thinner layer of leather covering and that also has designs in it that are different than the front. The handle is attached firmly and is sound and solid as is the shield itself. This would still ward off a nice blow. It looks like at one time this also had a leather strap attached that was anchored to the shield at 2 points on one side and 2 points the other. The remains of the old leather nots are still in the holes on the one side. Makes sense that it would have a strap when the shield wasn't being used ... moreto carry over the shoulder or back and leave the hands free. This pendant is genuinely very old- how old is beyond my expertise. I bought it as part jewellery lot at an auction house which recently sold the contents of a mansion house in West Wales. Antique primitive African Dogon Mali? House guider post? with face on top
I found this at an estate sale. The man I bought it from said that it had belonged to his grandparents who were missionaries in Africa in the fifties. True or not I don't know. It does look very old. The man said he thought it had belonged to a medicine man. After research on internet I believe it may be a Dogon Guider post for houses in Africa. Ther is a hole in the bottom rounded part that could have been where it was mounted. There is a face on both sides and it is 14 1/2 inches long. I found this mask along with other African items at an estate sale. The man I bought it from says that it had belonged to his grandparents who were missionaries in Africa in the fifties. Antique Vintage Silver Plate Veldon 6045 Animals People Design Basket African
Up for sale is an Antique Veldon Silver Plate Basket with an Egyptian or African Design of People and Animals around the Edges. This is in good condition with a large amount of overall finish wear and tarnish with some burning to the silver on the bottom of the basket. It is approx. 10 in wide by 9.5 in tall to top of handle. The handle has the design as well as all around the edge of the basket. It is marked Veldon Silver Plate 6045 on the bottom. It has a folding handle. I ship within 1 business day of payment. I found this pipe bowl at an estate sale. The man I bought it from said it belonged to his grandparents and they had acquired it while missionaries in Africa in the fifties. Rare. Antique African grannery door from the Dogon in Mali, probably I was told, over 100 years old. Beautiful patina all over and original wear shown on it. Rows of stylized female figures; 9" W x 14" Door was bought from my African dealer friend who just returned from a trip to West Africa(with many more items still to arrive) He told me that he hasn't seen an"original" door of this type in a very long time and said this was a rare find for him. Antique toma tagega board (24 pits) (African mancala-Oware-game) Ethiopia?
I purchased this African board game several years ago on eBay. I know next to nothing about it-only what research I could find on the'net: This is likely a toma tagega board(24 pits) Lamlameta or mancala(Oware type) game-mainly played by the Konso people of Ethiopia. I have no idea of the age of the piece. Only that the board has been heavily used showing true game wear. The board weighs 4.25 lbs. Or just under 2 kilos and measures 25 inches x 6.5 inches. Depending on your location, postage may have to be negotiated.

We found the following on zyama site on the internet(GREAT SITE! HEMBA(BAHEMBA) Democratic Republic of the Congo In southeast DRC. The 90,000 Hemba people inhabit the right bank of the Lualaba River. This region presents vast plains surrounded by high hills and bordered by streams, rocks, and marshes. They are primarily subsistence agriculturalists whose main staples include manioc, maize, peanuts, beans and yams. These crops are supplemented by small scale hunting and fishing done mostly by the men. Some alluvial copper is panned from the river and sold to outside markets. Ths is an antique hand carved wood- wooden figure- statue from Africa. This is a very nice hand carved African art. The statue does show wear from its age and does have a broken piece from the base but does not show from the front when displayed. This statue measures aprox 10 1/4 INCHES TALL.
