Bena Biombo- Democratic Republic of the Congo Early-Mid 20th Century. Original Wood. Pigment, vegetal fibers Height 36.1cm( 14.25in) without raffia beard ... moreLewis and Sonja Pate Collection. Whispering Pines, NC. Field collected in Zaire, early 20th cenury. Dr. Carlton W. Helen Moore Collection. Waldorf, MD. Fayetteville Museum of Art. Fayetteville, NC, 2001. Deaccessioned and sold to fund construction of the new museum in Festival Park. Detailed provenance documentation on file and can accompany the artifact for historical conservation purposes. The Biombo have been strongly influenced politically and culturally by their Kuba neighbors to the north. Describing an near identical mask form. The Bowers Museum Collections Department notes“within the Kasai province in central Democratic Republic of Congo are a number of very small, sometimes ancient tribes who have retained their individuality. Among them are the Bena Biombo who are best known for their masks of diverse type. This mask with half-closed eyes and arched eyebrows radiates a peaceful, benevolent air. The incised geometric designs across the cheeks and chin indicate tribal scarifications. Although Bena Biombo masks resemble those neighboring tribes, the three appendages on top of the head identify this mask as originating with the Bena Biombo. Feathers are attached to the top of the mask when it is worn. A woven support of reed encases the back of the mask to provide a secure fit for the wearer's head and ruffled grass extends from the back of the meshed reed around to the front of the mask. Although masks of this type may have served other religious and ceremonial purposes at an earlier date, today they are used primarily for entertainment and masquerades(Bena Biombo Mask, 2007) The extraordinary Biombo helmet mask we have up for auction was formerly in the Lewis Pate. Dr. Carlton and Helen Moore Collection. The Pate& Moore Collection was generously donated to Fayetteville Museum of Art in 2001. Founded in 1972, the Fayetteville Museum of Art move

Ethnic Design Necklace/Antique Venetian 19th C. Glass African Trade Beads/26"
I am listing an ethnic design necklace that I created. Made with rare, antique glass African trade beads, originally made in Venice, and dating from the late 19th century. Necklace: 26" around; Sterling clasp. Beads came from the VERY large estate of a long time collector and dealer of African art. And most of his items were bought in the late 1960's and early 1970's when he had a gallery in Santa Fe. Many of the things I was lucky enough to buy were rare and very old. Please watch my site for other necklaces I will be listing. That I have designed with vintage, Pre-Columbian, gemstone, and trade beads, strung with ethnic and antique pendants, fishing lures, those of my own design and castings, and other funky, fun and interesting things I find on my flea market adventure. My name is Elena. I’m collecting ancient beads from 1979. Most of my beads were found in Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. To be precise they were found between Mary city(Turkmenistan) and Samarkand(Uzbekistan) That area in past was called Bactria. Nowadays there are a lot of ruins older than 2000 years in this region. I like ancient beads very much and want that other collectors will be able to obtain them without paying a lot of money. That is why my prices are very modest. I lived in Asgabat ... morecity(the capital of Turkmenistan) over 30 years. About 15 km from Asgabat there is Nisa– former residence of Alexander the Great. And capital of Parthia. In most cases the ancient beads. Not only played the role of jewelry but also the status of the person wearing them. You were able to tell the social status of an individual based on the beads they were wearing, while other used these beads as talismans protecting themselves against bad luck and the evil eye. Certain beads that have zigzagging lines are supposed to confuse the evil eye which would get lost in these lines. Beads that have the image of an eye try to just absorb the evil energy, and thus protect the person who is wearing them. Periodically the beads would be washed in salt water, because it is believe the salt water kills the negative energy. The image of the eye was sometimes very abstract and was more like an image of a flower, however sometimes the beads would correctly reflect the wearers eyes, including the color. Parthia kingdom. UNCLE TOM'S CABIN Negro SLAVERY Black Americana African Civil War ANTIQUE BOOK
1882 UNCLE TOM'S CABIN === NEW EDITION === T his auction is for an original 1882 EDITION! of" UNCLE TOM'S CABIN" by Harriet Beecher Stowe. Y OU'LL LOVE THIS BOOK! I t is dominated by a single theme: the evil and immorality of slavery. Stowe emphasizes the horrors of slavery on almost every page of the novel while also asserting that Christian love can overcome something as destructive as the enslavement of fellow human beings. U nlike the 1852 1st edition. Published by John P. Jewett& Company in two separate volumes, this special NEW EDITION! contains VOL. 1& 2 combined into one book. I t is beautifully illustrated with over 106 ILLUSTRATIONS! U pon publication. Uncle Tom's Cabin ignited a firestorm of protest from defenders of slavery(who created a number of books in response to the novel) while the book ... moreelicited praise from abolitionists. Southern reactions ranged from forcing a bookseller in Mobile. Alabama to leave town for selling the novel to sending threatening letters to Stowe herself(including a package containing a slave's severed ear) The novel had a profound effect on attitudes toward African Americans and slavery in the United States. So much so in the latter case that the novel intensified the sectional conflict leading to the American Civil War. The book also helped create a number of stereotypes about Blacks, many of which endure to this day. These include the affectionate, dark-skinned mammy; the Pickaninny stereotype of black children; and the Uncle Tom, or dutiful, long-suffering servant faithful to his white master or mistress. In recent years. The negative associations with Uncle Tom's Cabin have. To an extent, overshadowed the historical impact of the book as a"vital antislavery tool. In the first year of publication, 300,000 copies of Uncle Tom's Cabin were sold. The book eventually became the best-selling novel in the world during the 19th century(and the second best-selling book after the Bible) With the book being translated into every m

Antique Namji Doll Namchi Female Fertility Beaded Cameroon African Art
Antique Namji Doll Namchi Female Fertility Beaded Cameroon African Art Description: V intage Namji/Namchi beaded African doll that has been mounted on an acrylic base for display. Small beads on body appear to have been strung and then cemented to body appearing very old and primitive. One of the more interesting dolls I have see in a while. Namchi(Namji) dolls. Among the Namchi people of Cameroon, unadorned dolls made by blacksmiths are played with by young children. When beads, cowrie shells, bells, coins, and other ornaments are added, however, the doll becomes a surrogate baby for a woman who is having difficulty getting pregnant. The woman treats the figure like a baby, feeding it and carrying it on her back. The Namchi/Namchi group lives in the north west of Cameroon and is famous for its geometrical carved and highly decorated dolls. ... moreThe girls learn their motherly duties by playing with them. Usually they always carry the dolls around with them. Feeding them and telling them stories from the old ones before going to bed. Condition: Good condition considering previous owner has written on bottom 100+ years. Also marked on tape on base is namji doll, cameroon. There is some breakage at top of head where beads attach but otherwise in quite fine condition. Approx. Measurements: 9" including base. Made in: Cameroon. According to previous owner. Color: Dark brown with yellow and red beads. Be sure to check out my other vintage items on sale: Click on pictures to SUPERSIZE- Please note in bidding. Antique Authentic Figural/Figure & Snake African Art Bronze Statue-Dogon Tribe
This auction is for an authentic antique figural African Art bronze statue from the Dogon Tribe in Mali. The bronze is of a tribesman carrying what I believe is a snake in his right hand. The man appears to be an elder. As he has a long beard. The bronze has absolutely amazing patina and has started to green in places. This piece was found in an estate auction in which the man had hundreds of pieces of African art, all museum quality! This bronze also includes a specially made stand which fits around the man's abdomen and his feet rest on a 1 inch black painted wood block for 360 degree viewing! The bronze(without the stand) is approximately 8 inches tall and 2 inches wide. The stand adds about 1 inch to the total height. The Dogon Tribe: The Dogon are an ethnic group living in the central plateau region of the country of Mali. In the ... moreWest of the Continent of Africa, south of the Niger bend. The population numbers between 400.000 and 800,000. The Dogon are best known for their religious traditions. Their mask dances, wooden sculpture(making the bronze more rare! and their architecture. Dogon art is primarily sculpture. Dogon art revolves around religious values. Ideals, and freedoms. Dogon sculptures are not made to be seen publicly, and are commonly hidden from the public eye within the houses of families, sanctuaries, or kept with the Hogon. The importance of secrecy is due to the symbolic meaning behind the pieces and the process by which they are made. Themes found throughout Dogon sculpture consist of figures with raised arms. Superimposed bearded figures. Horsemen, stools with caryatids, women with children, figures covering their faces, women grinding pearl millet, women bearing vessels on their heads, donkeys bearing cups, musicians, dogs, quadruped-shaped troughs or benches, figures bending from the waist, mirror-images, aproned figures. And standing figures. Signs of other contacts and origins are evident in Dogon art. The Dogon people were not the first inhabitants of the cliffs of Bandiaga

RARE & UNUSUAL ANTIQUE AFRICAN FIGURAL SPOON
This is a really nice piece that I recently acquired from an estate sale. I believe it to have significant age as the sale had ver old items acquired by wold wide travelers. The spoon is in good condition and developing a nice patina. The creation is crude and intriguing with a man playing some sort of flute instrument. This is a really nice unusual find. Winning bidder pays $7.00 S&H. Thanks for viewing and Good Luck! 7:ce.RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Fuk.rp*14%3E7%3Ace-13e52b89e3a-0xf2-
Antique Primitive African? Wooden Carved Headrest with Spoon Billed Bird on top
Up for auction is a rare piece that I do not know much about but I will try to explain the best I can. It was bought at a doctor estate sale last year. I was told that it was made in Africa and that it was a headrest. It has been carved from one solid piece of pale wood. Even the legs are a part of the same piece with no nails, glue, or screws. There is a carving of a spoon billed bird on the top. The condition for this type of item is very good. There is one old chip on the top near the birds feet but this looks like it could have been done in the carving process? Please look at all of the photos for more details. The size is approx. 14 1/2" long. 5" tall, and 5 1/2" wide. Thank you for looking and Happy Bidding! Sorry. I only ship within the USA

African antique gold weight lost wax casting Bronze 4"
Antique African Lost wax casting Bronze gold weight.4" tall Background and History The Ashanti/Asante/Asante/Akan people of Southern Ghana are known for their gold trade. In addition to mining and trading it they create elaborate gold and metal works of art. Fanciful gold weights are some of the bestknown examples of Akan arts reflecting their artistry in small scalebut carrying great meaning. Used to measure gold dust on scales. The gold weights are made of brass and sculpted in many different designs. Older weights 1400 to 1720 tend to be geometric; figurative shapes of animals or people date from 1720 to 1930. The weights were not only used for measuring. They were also worn as jewelry and storyteller charms. The storyteller would hang the charms on his hat and have people point to a charm to hear its story. Some weights would carry ... moretraditional proverbial lore or simply show people in everyday activity or comment upon social and political relationships. Or to reflect upon religious acts and spiritual ideals. Humans, animals, fish, amphibians as well as objects of everyday life were apt subject for representation in weights. Each piece is individually made. No two are exactly the same because the mold is broken in the'lost-wax' process. This method is very labor-intensive. The initial form is sculpted out of wax which is then dipped several times into very fine powdered black mud and allowed to harden. Forming a clay casting around the mold. The clay is then heated until the wax melts and is poured out of its casting, leaving a hollow mold in the shape of the original sculpture. Finally, molten brass is poured into the casting replacing the old wax mold. Once cool, the cast is broken away from the brass; leaving a solid ornament. Check out my!Be sure to add me to your! ANTIQUE AFRICAN ART PETRIFIED LEATHER TRIBAL VASE. UNKNOWN AGE no reserve
ANTIQUE AFRICAN HARD PETRIFIED LEATHER TRIBAL VASE the vase was acquired through a estate art storage auction of west African artifacts and other antiques. i know very little of African art. the vase. I am not relay shore it is a vase but we will just call it that. it stands at 17 1/2 inches tall and 29 inches round at its widest point. it comes with 2 rings one on witch it sits on and the other on its neck. there appear to be small metal pins or dots in it. the vase itself is made of some hard petrified leather and wood. there are small carvings on it of what looks like a sun and other images i cant make out. there is some form of stitching on the neck made of leather. it has a leather strap with some fur of the animal going around the base and has been petrified to the base. It then comes over the top to form a handle. it has some weight ... moreto it. 4 to 5 pounds. this vase is very old and has seen a great deal of use. it is covered with markings and signs of usage and repairs over its life time as most things its age would have. came to me in a storage bin estate auction its old i never seen anything like it before. no reserve price.
