The Ambete are part of the same group as the Kota and Punu and share with them a cult surrounding ancestral bones. The reliquary figures are particularly interesting. They are usually quite large. Columnar in shape and have a hatch at the back. It is sometimes claimed that bones are kept in this compartment. In all the examples I have seen, the space available is much smaller than the reiquaries used by the Fank, Kota, etc. I am inclined to think, that apart from some fragments, this compartment was chiefly intended to receive Bilongo- magical substances to keep the guardian powerful- rather than human remains. The latter would have been stored in a more secure basket beside the guardian. Interestingly. The hatches of these two contain a large clam shell, fastened in place with a nail and set in a bed of raffia, apparently a fetish object, leaving little room for anything else. The figures are quite large at 29" tall and wear necklaces. The faces are extremely distictive. Lozenge-shaped, with a central brow beneath which are smallish features designed to scare away potential thieves of the precious bones. Rows of teeth give the mouth bite. Small green chevron trade beads. 19th or early 20th century, made in Venice for the African trade. 32" strand. The beads measure 3-7 mm long x 5 mm diameter. These beads have been worn and used for at least a hundred years: they are in good condition but there are some scratches and chips. Included are the original stones that came in the box. The box is paper mache, very sturdy and thick, but does have one corner that must have rubbed against something. Old antique rare blue Venetian millefiori chevron elbow African trade bead
Elbow bead found in a market in Cote d'Ivoire(Ivory Coast) in about 1991-92. Cobalt blue(a bit darker than the photo shows) Made from pieces of chevron wound on to the central cane. Old antique Venetian African flat tabular green watermelon chevron trade beads.
47 green'watermelons' Including 37 tabular beads. These flat, green chevron trade beads are quite rare now. 19th or early 20th century, made in Venice for the African trade. Loosely strung they make a 21" strand. The beads measure 5-15 mm long and the flat beads are about 8mm across. One of the beads has a manufacturing flaw where the outer layers must have come loose before the bead was fired. Exposing the red and white layers and giving the bead an unusual and irregular pattern on one side. These beads have been worn and used for at least a hundred years: they are in good condition but there are some scratches and chips. Antique African trade beads. 7 old Venetian millefiori & 9 Venetian Eye design.
Originally offered at a fixed price. This 14" raffia string of dark beads was found in a market in Cote d'Ivoire(Ivory Coast) in about 1991-92. 7 matched Venetian millefiori beads from the 19th or early 20th century and the 9 larger black beads are in the Venetian Eye. Or'fried egg' design. The smaller millefiori beads measure 15-20 mm long by about 7 mm diameter. The'Venetian Eye' Or'fried egg' beads measure 25-30 mm by about 9 mm diameter. There are some chips, including one large one(see bead at bottom left of the first photo) but they are excellent examples of a bead that is not often seen. Antique 1920's Black African Bookends Black Nubian Warriors Negroes Original
Pair of vintage Egyptian Revival bookends. They appear to be white metal covered in bronze. I thought they were pure bronze because they weigh 5 lbs each. And have some green oxidation showing on both, but one has a thumb broken off, and it appears to be white metal underneath. The metal under the green felt is magnetic, but the rest of the bookends are not. They are unmarked, unless there is a makers mark under the felt They are 8 3/4" tall, and are as-found. I'm sure the green oxidation will remove easily if desired. Photo#4 shows some adhesive along the front base of one of them. Whatever it is, it is very hard and not seen on the other one. Large 14 1/2" Antique Vintage African Carved Figural Bowl or Vessel From Estate
This auction is for what I believe is an extremely neat African carving that has been in my personal collection for some time now. I originally purchased this at a very small Maine estate auction. This is an impressive 14 1/2" tall carving masterfully made from a single piece of wood. Bowl measures about 8" in diameter. The piece depicts a donkey with the assistance of two men carrying a large bowl upon its back. The bowl is decorated with images of 2 alligators. 2 frogs and 4 snakes. Although much of it is worn away the outside of the bowl, figures and top of the base are coated in what seems to be a light colored clay or something of the sort. Inside of bowl and underside of base are left natural and unfinished. As the wood has dried out over the years it has cracked in several spots as should be evident in photos. One of the ... moremens hands has cracked and pulled away from the bowl, there are several cracks around the outside of the base and several cracks around the rounded portion of the bowl. With that said everything still feels very structural sound. One small area of the base is discolored where it appears as though the wood has soaked up a liquid of some sort. I dont know enough about African carving to comfortably date the piece but it appears to have some apparent age. Indicating this was actually used& worn, rather than created only for display. The Eyes have slits carved into them, so you can see through them, and It also has holes on the sides for attaching this to a person's face/head. There's also a hole at the top, which could be used for hanging, but that'top' hole was also used to secure this to one's head. I'm reasonably sure this is a PUNU mask. Also sometimes attributed to: Apono. Bapunu, Mpongwe, Pounou, Puno tribes/groups of Gabon, Africa. Punu masks are distinguished by white(sometimes black) faces with protruding pursed lips, high-domed foreheads, and characteristic rigid high coiffures ... morereflecting the Punu women's hair styles. The almost always feature raised diamond-shape scarification marks on the foreheads and temples. These characteristics are ALL present on this lovely mask. From"THE TRIBAL ARTS OF AFRICA" by Bacquart: This type of mask is used by various tribes in Gabon. Spirit Maiden Mask" portrays a beautiful maiden with her whitened face and serene expression. As in life this beautiful maiden wears an elaborate hairstyle shown through polychrome colors. The mask would be worn with a colorful costume covering her body. Although the mask has an Asian expression. Hollow Wood Cells Because of the misunderstanding regarding hollow wood cells. A brief explanation is needed. Any person dating carvings has many criteria to determine age. The breakdown of the wood cells is an important aspect of age determination. The strength of the wood is the outer edge of cells. The cell center(like bone marrow) is the passageway that feeds the wood. This center lacks strength as it is softer then the cell walls, thus it disintegrates more quickly. Laboratories determine the progress of the cell center decay to determine the wood age. This varies some by the tree variety also the location of the carving must be considered. It is difficult if not impossible to find a 300 year old carving in the tropics as humidity speeds destruction. Also wood eating insects are a big problem. Many of the Dogon areas are in the dessert above the insect line. Pieces can and are stored above the insect line for many centuries in this very dry climate. The study of providence shows it takes 250 to 300 years for a dry climate stored Dogon piece to get hollow wood cells. This is factual and not a guess. Even with Dogon. Circa 1920s figural match safe A genuine art deco period cast bronze match safe in the form of a black african girl wearing a grass skirt and carrying a lidded basket. The patinated figure and stylised plant are held on to the base by three screws. The last picture shows the screws to the underside of the base and the original unpatinated colour of the bronze casting. No makers mark but most probably Austrian or German in origin. Antique Arabic Ottoman Persian North African Ebony Hilt Jambiyah Dagger c1880 This is for an antique Arabic Ottoman Persian North African Jambiyah Dagger. Circa 1880. The good quality narrow steel blade, tapering to a sharp point, with a visible tang, with white metal collar, and a precious ebony hardwood hilt, with a copper pommel. The dagger has a leather covered scabbard, which is finely worked with tooled decortion. The dagger measures 276 mm in length overal. The blade measures 158 mm in length. It weighs 71 grams. The condition is generally excelllent, without dmaage or repair, there is a small amount of wear to the scabbard tip, and a few small chips to the white metal collar. Please see images. Vintage Ethiopian Kirar (aka Krar), Genuine African Item, Possibly Antique
This is an item that my mother-in-law purchased in an antique shop in Addis Ababa when my wife's famility lived in Ethiopia in the early 1960's. It's in good condition and. As recommended with all older items, I have not cleaned it, or tightened the strings, but simply took it down from the closet where it has been for many years and posted these photos. Exact age is unknown, but dates to at least 1962. Strings appear to be made from animal gut. Overall construction and carving appears to be done by hand- an authentic piece of African culture. It's 20" long, drum is 8.5" wide, top of harp shape is 16" wide, and drum is 5" deep, and is missing one of the pieces of wood at the top of the string that would act as the tightening key, also small rub mraks on the back of the lyre shaped braces- both blemishes ... moreshown in pics. Beads came from the VERY large estate of a long time collector and dealer of African art. And most of his items were bought in the late 1960's and early 1970's when he had a gallery in Santa Fe. Conditions are as you can see in the images. Mapmaker: Herman Moll(1654- 1732) was an important 18th century map publisher and engraver based in London and Holland. Moll's origins are disputed with some suggesting he was born in the Netherlands and others Germany- the Moll name was common in both countries during this period. Most likely Moll was a German from Bremen. As his will, friends, and contemporaries suggest. What is known for certain is that he moved to London in 1678, possibly fleeing the Scanian War, where he worked as an engraver for Moses Pitt and other London map publishers. Around the turn of the century, Moll set up his own shop where he produced a large corpus of work known for its high quality and decorative flair. As a new émigré to England, Moll made himself more English than the English, and through his cartography proved a fierce advocate for his adopted nation. The breakdown of the wood cells is an important aspect of age determination. The strength of the wood is the outer edge of cells. The cell center(like bone marrow) is the passageway that feeds the wood. This center lacks strength as it is softer then the cell walls, thus it disintegrates more quickly. Laboratories determine the progress of the cell center decay to determine the wood age. This varies some by the tree variety also the location of the carving must be considered. Ancient African Bottle Gourd: this piece would be an amazing addition to a personal collection or for a museum's collection of African Artifacts This ancient bottle gourd of this type were used primarily for carrying milk or water. The bottom is constructed from a gourd. The neck is animal hide hand stitched to gourd. Straps, made from leather strips crisscross under the jar supporting gourd and forming handle for carrying. This piece is very old with a few tiny worm holes on bottom. They do not effect the integrity of the jar and are not visible when jar is upright. This amazing collectors piece is thought to be from West Africa. I could only locate one example similar to this on the internet. The exact date is unknown but felt to be ancient. Before 1900. I like this one because the woman is sitting down and the man is doing the work. I have not seen one with the man doing this before. Very nice! Yam is a potato like root used in making Foo Foo. West African Antique Bronze/Brass Husband & Wife Playing Mancala
Bronze/Brass Cast Husband and Wife Playing Mancala. Approx 3" tall X 4" wide and 1&1/2 pounds in weight. Very fun piece that was made in the Lost Cast Method as follows: The process begins with beeswax. Latex, or another material with a low melting point. It must be soft enough for carving fine details, but hard enough to retain its shape. After the wax object has been carved, increasingly coarse layers of clay are applied to the object and allowed to dry. The first and finest clay slips capture the wax details in the smooth mold, and the coarser clay layers provide strength. The entire assemblage is fired, causing the original wax carving to melt away, leaving only a baked clay shell. Liquid metal is poured into the empty mold and left to cool and harden. Later, the clay exterior is broken open, revealing the finished metal ... moreobject beneath. In direct lost-wax casting, the object produced is always unique, as the mold is necessarily destroyed as part of the casting process. This is an original sculpture. Wonderful for the collector!
