This is the male; I am selling the female of the pair concurrently on eBay- ... moreplease check my other items. The Ambete are part of the same group as the Kota and Punu and share with them a cult surrounding ancestral bones. The reliquary figures are particularly interesting. They are usually quite large. Columnar in shape and have a hatch at the back. It is sometimes claimed that bones are kept in this compartment. In all the examples I have seen, the space available is much smaller than the reiquaries used by the Fank, Kota, etc. I am inclined to think, that apart from some fragments, this compartment was chiefly intended to receive Bilongo- magical substances to keep the guardian powerful- rather than human remains. The latter would have been stored in a more secure basket beside the guardian. Interestingly. The hatches of these two contain a large clam shell, fastened in place with a nail and set in a bed of raffia, apparently a fetish object, leaving little room for anything else. The figures are quite large at 29" tall and wear necklaces. The faces are extremely distictive. Lozenge-shaped, with a central brow beneath which are smallish features designed to scare away potential thieves of the precious bones. Rows of teeth give the mouth bite. This is a rare and powerful figure. Seldom offered for sale on eBay.

Its perimeter is surrounded with cotton cloth and plaited vegetal fibers The use of cotton cloth and the red paint are unusual for the Lwena. But the coffee-bean eyes, the pointed nose as well as the fine mouth are of Lwena style. Isolated groups of Lwena have historically settled alongside, and mingled with, villages in the southern DRC, so it is not too surprising to see one of their African masks display sparse Congo minimalism more aligned to the Lega and Lele than the artistically formal Angolan groups, like the Chockwe. This attribution is by no means a given, but the charm and surprising power of this African mask is undeniable. It is a fascinating example of the profound and far-reaching influence of masking traditions from the southern Congo. This mask would add some colors to a collection. The Lwena people. Neighbors of the well-known Chokwe people, share much with the Chokwe in the forms of their art and culture, however Lwena art is less varied consisting primarily of masks and female figures. Among the Baule of the Ivory Coast this dark painted circular mask surmounted by horns is known as Goli Kple kple. The surface shows traces of red pigment and wear. Historically the mask was a late introduction to the Baule who acquired it from the neighboring Wan people sometime around 1900. It appears during ceremonies celebrating the life and death of honored elders or at other times will dance to simply entertain the village or celebrate the harvest. The Baule have a number of different masks ranging from refined portrait masks to large headpieces representing wild buffalo or antelope and are exuberantly carved and painted. The Kple kple mask was one of a set of masks that appear during a ceremony and is identified with the spirit of the young men who dance the mask. As one of the first masks to appear during a dance ceremony Goli Kple kple sets the stage and engages the audience and prepares the way for the more important masks that will dance later. Museum quality authentic artifact(circa late 1800s) representing a GOLD DUST MEASURING SPOON. The item is about 3.5" long. In excellent antique condition. Small spoons used for lifting the gold dust from the gold dust boxes. The Ashanti name for spoon is"N'sawa. Ashanti gold weights are also named Mbramoo(sing. abramoo) This is an Ashanti gold weight. Used in the measuring of gold and gold dust, which was mined and panned in great quantities along the West Coast of Africa, hence the name Gold Coast. Gold was used in the Ashanti kingdom, now known as Ghana, in trading with outsiders, making personal adornments, and as an internal currency. Ashanti weights ... moresuch as these have a variety of accoutrements such as boxes. Spoons and balances used to hold or measure out gold dust. A full kit would include boxes, spoons, balance and around forty weights; this was known as a futoo and carried wrapped together in cloth. The futoo would then be put into a leather container or wooden box. Or if the owner was a wealthy man, a cast-brass kuduo box. These boxes, full of gold dust, could be buried with their owners and dug up again if needed, or hidden in times of trouble. The weight itself is made of bronze or brass. Which was obtained through trade in European imports from the late 15th century onwards. Weights were cast using the lost-wax method which is still the best way of preserving fine modeling and detail. This is a nice old well-patinated Hemba axe which measures 15 inches in length x 10.5 inches wide. I picked this up in the Democratic Republic of Congo several years ago. It is approximately 35 to 40 years of age(the wood aspect) While the inserted metal blade- also quite old- may not be the original to the anthropomorphically-finialed handle. Please note from the last pic, that the honed, terminal-end of the blade-head perforates the cross-hatched end of the haft through a hole which exits the obverse side in an asymmetrical position. The color derived from the patination gives the axe handle a beautiful and radiant appearance. The anthropomorphic cranium finial is very well-executed. The breakdown of the wood cells is an important aspect of age determination. The strength of the wood is the outer edge of cells. The cell center(like bone marrow) is the passageway that feeds the wood. This center lacks strength as it is softer then the cell walls, thus it disintegrates more quickly. Laboratories determine the progress of the cell center decay to determine the wood age. This varies some by the tree variety also the location of the carving must be considered. It is difficult if not impossible to find a 300 year old carving in the tropics as humidity speeds destruction. Also wood eating insects are a big problem. Antique African Glass Beaded Gourd Cosmetic Box: Benin
Up for sale is a gorgeous vintage African beaded calabash gourd from the Republic of Benin-likely the Yoruba or Fon tribes. The piece is decorated with a variety of colorful glass beads tied together with a network of strings visible from the inside. These boxes were used to hold valuables such as cosmetics. The gourd is nearly 7" in diameter and approx. 5.5" tall to the top of the gourds natural lid knob. I haven't found the right spot where the 2 halves of the gourd sit perfectly on top of each other but they get very close. I have not been able to find another example of a complete box like this on line-I've found just the lids or even someone selling broken pieces of these boxes. But not a complete one like this. There's a crack on the bottom as seen in the last photo and the lid has a crack that is covered with ... morebeads and hard to see but the gourd is still whole and complete. I can see only one hole where a strand of beads is missing so the beads are in very nice condition as well. I purchased this at auction and am uncertain of its age but believe it to be several decades old if not older. It's a rare, colorful and fabulous piece! Please note that my shipping time is up to 5 business days as I have multiple jobs and can only ship one day a week. If you happen to purchase after I return from the post office on shipping day it will be a full week wait until I am able to ship again. The breakdown of the wood cells is an important aspect of age determination. The strength of the wood is the outer edge of cells. The cell center(like bone marrow) is the passageway that feeds the wood. This center lacks strength as it is softer then the cell walls, thus it disintegrates more quickly. Laboratories determine the progress of the cell center decay to determine the wood age. This varies some by the tree variety also the location of the carving must be considered. It is difficult if not impossible to find a 300 year old carving in the tropics as humidity speeds destruction. Also wood eating insects are a big problem. Antique Hand Carved African Whole Head Mask From Mozambique
You will be bidding on a very old hand carved wooden African whole head mask. It is carved from one piece of wood. This mask was purchased in an antique shop in Tanzania in the early 1990s and belived to have been made in Mozambique. The wood is quite light in weight. It has intricate carving designs on the forehead. Cheeks, chin, nose, and jawline. There is some hair on a portion of the head, but it appears that much of it has fallen out. It feels like real hair. This mask measures about 12" by about 8" It would have to be a small head to fit into it. One of the eyes has a tiny slit on the inside and the teeth openings do go all the way through, so a person could breathe with the mask on. This mask would be held to the face by hand rather than any kind of strap. It is very realistic. The way it is made. It could be displayed hanging ... moreon a wall or sitting on a desk. Antique African Horned Devil Mask This mask is believed to be from the mid 19th century. The mask is in great shape but does have a very old crack running down part of the forehead(see photos) Handmade and very old. It is unknown what the symbology is but it is likely meant to scare off evil spirits. From the Chable-Grunberg collection. This was a Estate find and I don't know much about these carvings. the 2 animals appear to be very old and need repair to the ear(s) or display them as is. ANTIQUE Carved wood Central AFRICAN Head LADLE serving or cooking spoon MUST SEE
This is a carved wood piece from Africa as pictured. I believe it is from Central or central west Africa and that it is an authentic old piece although I do not have any definitive information and can only say what I see. It is approximately 14 inches long and seems to be the figure of a woman standing on a round part that was presumably used as a spoon. Scoop, ladle or some other kind of cooking or serving piece(or almost big enough to be a small shovel) It is hard carved from a single piece of wood and has wear and that certainly indicates it was used quite a lot and is reasonably old although I really have no specific information and can't make any representations or guarantees. There is also a small piece of wood somehow chipped off the bottom of the spoon, as the picture shows, which adds to my sense of actual use and age. Some string ... moreor twine is wrapped around the neck and the waist- I don't know what it may have signified or been used for but this again adds to the sense it is some old item from actual use, certainly not something created just recently for tourist sale. Given my lack of knowledge here, I'm setting a modest price to open bidding and taking a wild guess at a reasonable buy it now price although that may yield some expert buyer quite a bargain.

ANTIQUE Carved wood Central AFRICAN Head magic potion medicene VERY INTERESTING
This is a wood figure from Africa as pictured. I believe it is from Central or central west Africa and that it is an authentic old piece although I do not have any definitive information and can only say what I see. It is approximately 11 inches high and seems to be the figure of a man. Probably a medicine man or shaman or something. There is a hollow that is roughly rectangular in the back which I would guess to have been the place where a magic mixture of some sort was inserted as part of the ritual magic common with these sorts of figures, whether to cure or to hex or whatever. The figure seems perhaps to have been covered with some kind of white and that removed, or partially removed. The piece feels and looks reasonably old, certainly not like any kind of recent tourist trade creation, but I cannot really do moer than guess how old it ... moremight actually be- maybe 50 to 100 years, perhaps more. It is in good condition except for a crack that has developed in the wood from the left eye area down through the edge of the mouth toward the base- I would not regard it as greatly harming the piece and assume it is just the natural result from a piece of wood drying out/aging. Given my lack of knowledge here, I'm setting a modest price to open bidding and taking a wild guess at a reasonable buy it now price although that may yield some expert buyer quite a bargain.

These are of the highly desirable"date" shape, except for the middle bicone, inserted to balance the string. Drilled from both ends; sharp facets. Some damaged, either because seconds were sold to the Africans(like the bum guns and rum they used to sell them) or because the merchants so disrespected them, or because they couldn't hold up to the tribal dancing. Amazingly beautiful antique/vintage African wedding baskets. Traditionally handed down from generation to generation and used to collect grain. Seeds, and vegetables from the fields and they are often filled with cassava roots and set out to dry in the sun. These baskets are repaired rather than discarded and patches made from banana leaves or corn husk and woven into place using the same makenge roots with which the basket was originally created.
