Gold Weights: The Gold weights or Mbramoo of the Akan are stylized miniature sculptures traditionally used to weigh bags of gold dust for use as currency. ... moreMade of bronze or brass the weights are made using the traditional lost wax casting technique(I highly recommend viewing this for a precursory view of the technique) The weights themselves often became status symbols with higher nobility indicted with not only owning more weights but the degree of casting in the weights and the accompanying accouterments like spoons and decorative chests. Each weight was made to be equivalent to a Uquiya or Islamic ounce(roughly 27.3 grams) With the weights either being filed down or adorned with beads to achieve the perfect weight. Though long since out of use for actual gold measurements, the weights have continued to be made and serve now more as collectible handmade sculptures. This particular piece is a Rooster or Chicken measuring about 1.75 in long by 2 in tall, with a lovely filigree and patina making it wonderful for any collector! Motifs: Akan gold weights were often used not only for simple measurements but to strike up conversation during business transactions by each conveying a unique story or idea through their designs and representations. These design motifs usually fall into three trends; courtly figures. Adinkra symbols or representational animals. The figures representing Ashanti nobility tend to be allegories. Myths and fables of the Ashanti's origins. The Adinkra symbols are much flatter, rectangular designs based upon the Ashanti Adrinkra system of writing where philosophical concepts and aphorisms are represented with stylized patterns and designs(the Adrinkra is not a phonetic system of writing and holds no capability for writing nouns, verbs, etc but instead conveys transcendent thoughts on the nature of existence) The animal representations often are attempts to convey proverbs relating to the individual animals. African camels caravan desert Egypt Sudan 1719 Mallet antique engraved print von den Cameelen CHAMEAUX(Camels- Africa) Issued Frankfurt. Germany, 1719 by Mallet Fine original antique engraved print. Made approximately 290 years ago. Printed in the early 18th century, on quality paper which retains its inherent structural flexibility and soundness. In Good+ to near VG or better condition. Light uniform age toning and small minor spotting as seen[note: we grade very conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws] The printed area remains visually pleasing. A nice impression of an interesting image. Sheet measures c. 6 1/2" W x 8 1/4" H. Printed area measures c. 3 3/4" W x 5 1/2" H. 13963] Any defects along the sheet edges and in the margins may be seen in the photos. note: All old sheets of printed paper ... morepossibly have short edge splits. Antique Tintype Photo Gun Armed African American Black Americana Civil War Slave
WELCOME! Up for auction is an extremely rare. Antique, 19th century, Victorian, Black Americana collectible, tin tintype photo of an African American man, most probably a emancipated Civil War slave. I don't know if HE knew it at the time. But if you L@K closely, you will see that he has a hole right smack dab in the middle crotch of his britches. Note: I have closely examined this tintype photo. Found that it is in fact an actual hole, and not an imperfection or just something on the surface of the photo. This man is wearing a pork pie hat and I believe that he is probably armed. Wearing a pistol gun holster by the looks of the wide belt with a large rectangular buckle. This African American man could have possibly served in the Civil War. Could have later served as an Indian Wars Buffalo Soldier, or he could have even been some type ... moreof lawman, or maybe even a wanted outlaw. This tintype photo has some wear. With surface rust, slight corner bends and measures approximately 2 3/8 x 3 5/8 inches. This item was removed from a photo album found here in North Carolina. That unfortunately gave no clues to his identity. As always. This comes from a SMOKE/PET FREE home! Please view my larger photos below and if you have any questions. Feel free to contact me! Antique African Blacksmith Tool, Calipers/Very Old with Heavy Rust Patina
I bought this very intersting rust encrused calipers it at the estate sale of African items descibed below. I can only speculate about its meaning and use. But I assume it was originally used by a blacksmith in some West African country, possibly Mali where many of my hand forged Iron sculptures came from. There is much value and symbolism associated with the art of blacksmithing in this area and perhaps this very old item had some type of religious significance and was kept for that reason, or that it was used as a currency item, or probably might have been excavated at a site in the Mali, Niger River where many older pieces have been found, It's patina speaks of great age, and there is a spot on it that look like melted glass. Item came from the very large estate of African art that belonged to a long time Santa Fe collector and dealer ... morewho bought many of his things in the 1960's and 1970's when he had a gallery in Santa Fe. Much of what I bought was very old and many things rare. Please watch my store as I list more metal things I bought. Including sculptures, sword, knives, weapons and currency items. I will also be listing older trade beads and pygmy bark cloth drawings I was able to buy as well. gsrx_vers_486(GS 6.5.1(486)
1897 Antique South African, Slave(?) Pipe, Name Plate, Bone. Very Interesting!
Forgive me for my lack of knowledge about this piece. And African art in general. I acquired this from a South African man who said he found it while hiking. It's a double bowled pipe, both bowls being lined with metal. Attached to this is a length of chain with some kind of name/identification plate reading from top to bottom"NO95024 WW Del 1897" Further along the chain is a piece of bone or horn that is wrapped in intricately woven copper. It is hollow all the way through and I'm not quite sure what it was used for. The pipe still smells of tobacco. I have no idea what this is worth but I thought I'd put it up to see what kind of interest it found. Please. If you have any more information regarding this piece, please let me know! I personally think it's of museum quality, but that's coming from a real novice! ... moreI was at the de Young Museum in San Francisco walking through the African exhibit and did see a short. South African staff of some kind that was wrapped in the identical woven copper and was dated to the same time period. I'm listing this with a buy it now or best offer. I'll supply more detailed pictures if requested. http:img.photobucket.com/albums/v507/EricO_DSC0333.jpg http:img.photobucket.com/albums/v507/EricO_DSC0337.jpg http:img.photobucket.com/albums/v507/EricO_DSC0335.jpg Thanks!
African Tribal Rare Antique Akan Ashanti Cast Bronze Large sculpture - Elephant
Fine Extremely Rare Antique(circa late 1800s) A shanti Cast Bronze Large sculpture- Elephant From the old private collection of the internationally celebrated artist and ardent Africanist. This is a rare. Museum quality authentic artifact(circa late 1800s) The item is about 7 1/4" x 9 1/4" in excellent antique condition. The basic method of lost-wax casting has been widely practiced on the African continent for centuries. While it is difficult to establish how the method was developed or introduced to the region. It is clear that West African sculptors were casting brass with this method for several hundred years prior to the arrival of the first Portuguese explorers along the coast in 1484. The technique requires a great deal of skill, involving extensive knowledge of both pottery and metalworking, and a careful attention to changing ... moretemperatures to prevent unwanted cracking or other damage to either the clay mold or to the metal sculpture during the casting process. Some of the earliest and most accomplished bronzeworks found in Africa date to the tenth century and are from a site called Igbo-Ukwu. Froo www.froo.com | Froo Cross Sell. ANTIQUE IVORY COAST TRIBAL MASK African Serpent
ANTIQUE IVORY COAST CEREMONIAL MASK EXTREMELY RARE ANTIQUE COAST TRIBAL MASK SMITHSONIAN DISPLAY PIECE Here is very very rare USED authentic Coast Tribal Mask. Carved from mahogany. This is a 27" inch tribal mask that was actually worn during ceremonial dances. The width of this mask is 6" There are 2 openings on each side of the mask for binding this onto the face. The eyes have been painted black. Blue and white and have had slits cut out of them so that the tribesmen could see while performing in the ceremonial dances. This piece was on display at the Smithsonian. And was given to my neighbor by the owner of the display. who was an anthropology intern there, Even though it is used. It is still in extremely nice condition. You can see in the extreme close ups below that the detailed carving is still sharp and the paint is still ... morevery substantial. The theme of the mask seems to be a large serpent. The mask starts under the chin with a carving of a large black snake. The body of the serpent becomes the face of the mask. Then, the top of the mask is the continuation of the serpent's body. This is a huge, heavy mahogany mask that is remarkable. Thanks for looking at my item! Please email me if you have any questions. I don't have a lot of strict rules and policies. I just enjoy selling nice things to nice people here on Ebay. I also enjoy receiving and giving pleasant feedback as well. I am retired now and spend my golden years looking for unique things to sell on Ebay. I usually have a few treasures listed at all times and I love the opportunity to combine shipping costs whenever possible. When selling antiques or pricey collectibles. I highly recommend that the winner of the auction takes advantage of the USPS shipping insurance, as most of these things are irreplacable and the Post Office just doesn't seem to be real careful with things anymore. I will pack your item very securely, but once it gets into the postal service's hands, I can't take responsibility for the item anymore unle

African Tribal Rare Antique Cast Bronze AKAN Ashanti Gold Weight - Wild boar
Fine Ashanti Antique(circa late 1800s) Cast Bronze Gold weight. From the old private collection of the internationally celebrated artist and ardent Africanist. This is a rare. Museum quality authentic artifact(circa late 1800s) in a shape of a Wild boar. The item is about 2 1/4" x 1 1/2" In excellent antique condition. Ashanti gold weights are also named Mbramoo(sing. abramoo) This is an Ashanti gold weight. Used in the measuring of gold and gold dust, which was mined and panned in great quantities along the West Coast of Africa, hence the name Gold Coast. Gold was used in the Ashanti kingdom, now known as Ghana, in trading with outsiders, making personal adornments, and as an internal currency. Ashanti weights such as these have a variety of accoutrements such as boxes. Spoons and balances used to hold or measure out gold dust. ... moreA full kit would include boxes, spoons, balance and around forty weights; this was known as a futoo and carried wrapped together in cloth. The futoo would then be put into a leather container or wooden box. Or if the owner was a wealthy man, a cast-brass kuduo box. These boxes, full of gold dust, could be buried with their owners and dug up again if needed, or hidden in times of trouble. The weight itself is made of bronze or brass. Which was obtained through trade in European imports from the late 15th century onwards. Weights were cast using the lost-wax method which is still the best way of preserving fine modeling and detail. A Short History of Ashanti Gold Weights The vast gold fields of Africa have produced not only great wealth. But have generated trade and art works. In Ashanti(present-day Ghana) A set of scales, and of brass weights for measuring out gold-dust, the local currency. Was a treasured item for everyone, and their neighbors, and the vast quantities of gold mined and panned within the Asante kingdom were used for trading with outsiders. For making regalia and personal adornment. And as an internal currency( McLeod 1981. 122) Not for nothing was this ar

Check out my store 10% of store profits go to aid victims of human trafficking If you have any questions please ask Thanks ... morefor looking! Hollow Wood Cells Because of the misunderstanding regarding hollow wood cells. A brief explanation is needed. Any person dating carvings has many criteria to determine age. The breakdown of the wood cells is an important aspect of age determination. The strength of the wood is the outer edge of cells. The cell center(like bone marrow) is the passageway that feeds the wood. This center lacks strength as it is softer then the cell walls, thus it disintegrates more quickly. Laboratories determine the progress of the cell center decay to determine the wood age. This varies some by the tree variety also the location of the carving must be considered. It is difficult if not impossible to find a 300 year old carving in the tropics as humidity speeds destruction. Also wood eating insects are a big problem. Many of the Dogon areas are in the dessert above the insect line. Pieces can and are stored above the insect line for many centuries in this very dry climate. The study of providence shows it takes 250 to 300 years for a dry climate stored Dogon piece to get hollow wood cells. This is factual and not a guess. Even with Dogon. Jim's experiences in Africa has shown that

ANTIQUE AFRICAN BATTLE AXE
This is a genuine antique battle axe dating to the 19th century and period of the slave trade. It is wood. 16” in length with an iron blade mounted transversely. That allowed it to be imbedded in the victim and twisted to create a horrible fatal wound, It also allowed the slaver to hook the arm or neck of a victim and capture him. Then inside of the blade is chiseled with a fertility symbol. Most African axes on the market today are fairly modern and made to carry as dress accessories or even made for the tourist trade. This is a genuine working weapon from the slave trade and shows considerable use in that pursuit. Condition is as shown.

Mapmaker: Rigobert Bonne(1727-1795) was one of the most important cartographers of the late 18th century. In 1773 he succeeded Jacques Bellin as Royal Cartographer to France in the office of the ... moreHydrographer at the Depôt de la Marine. Working in his official capacity Bonne compiled some of the most detailed and accurate maps of the period. Bonne's work represents an important step in the evolution of the cartographic ideology away from the decorative work of the 17th and early 18th century towards a more detail oriented and practical aesthetic. With regard to the rendering of terrain Bonne maps bear many stylistic similarities to those of his predecessor. Bellin. However, Bonne maps generally abandon such common 18th century decorative features such as hand coloring, elaborate decorative cartouches, and compass roses. While mostly focusing on coastal regions, the work of Bonne is highly regarded for its detail, historical importance, and overall aesthetic appeal. Cartographer: Guillaume Thomas Raynal(April 12. 1711- March 6, 1796) was a French writer, philosopher, and historian active during the Enlightenment. Raynal was educated as a Jesuit, but left the order for unknown reasons, and moved to Paris where he dedicated himself to the production of a number of minor but popular historical works. Firm hinges, clean pages, cover wear as shown, lacking frontpiece illustratio n otherwise complete with all pages and illustrations. Fold out map in good shape; overall a very good condition example of this rare work on the Underground Railr oad. H ere is the rare first edition work on the Underground Railroad by Wilbur H. Siebert. This pioneering work was the first documented survey of a system that helped fugitive slaves escape from areas in the antebellum South to regions as far north as Canada. Comprising fifty years of research. The text includes interviews and excerpts ... morefrom diaries, letters, biographies, memoirs, speeches, and other firsthand accounts. T he Underground Railroad was simply a form of combined defiance of national laws. On the ground that those laws were unjust and oppressive. It was the unconstitutional but logical refusal of several thousand people to acknowledge that they owed any regard to slavery or were bound to look on fleeing bondmen as the property of the slaveholders, no matter how the laws read. It was also a practical means of bringing anti-slavery principles to the attention of the lukewarm or pro-slavery people in free states; and of convincing the South that the abolitionist movement was sincere and effective. Above all, the Underground Railroad was the opportunity for the bold and adventurous; it had the excitement of piracy, the secrecy of burglary, the daring of insurrection; to the pleasure of relieving the poor negro's sufferings it added the triumph of snapping one's fingers at the slave-catcher; it developed coolness, indifference to danger, and quickness of resource. 0 false 18 pt 18 pt 0 0 false false false I n the introduction. Large Vintage/ Antique African Basket Tribal Grass Coil
A wonderful vintage African tribal basket that measures almost 17" in diameter and just under 2" high at outer edge. It is a very tightly woven coil basket that when held to light you can see maybe three or four pin holes of light coming through. The coils themselves are less than 1/8" wide. It has leather on outer edge that does show some wear typical of age and the finish knot looks to have come undone so there is a little tail of about 2" there that could be retied if desired. And also has leather on inner surface that also shows a little wear and a few minor spots of staining. There are a couple small areas on one side that has a little fading or light soiling to it. I do not clean or attempt to repair any item of this nature because I believe as close to original is always best. SHIPPING: Shipping calculator shows ... moreestimated shipping. ANTIQUE AFRICAN FANG EKET TRIBAL RITUAL VOODOO BASKET
TRIBAL RITUAL FETISH FIGURE STATUE CARVINGA reliquary bundle figure from the Fang The heart shaped face as well as the hairstyle locate the figure among the Ntumu. A northern Fang sub-group. The well-worn surface and the remains of offerings through the years the surface a dark brown patina. African Fang reliquaries are called Byeri. Fang tribe’s people would keep relics from their ancestors such as skulls. Bones and teeth in boxes often made from bark. Byeri were of huge importance to the Fang people. They favored group and personal enterprise, made fertile. Created wealth and assured the success of war parties and hunting trips. The belief in the passage of power from the dead to the living is key in Fang spirituality. Relic baskets often made of wicker called“bwété” were kept in a shady corner of the chief’s hut as a gesture ... moreof chiefdom. Bwété were revered with offerings and prayers to bring prosperity to the clan. The African reliquaries of the Obamba and Mahongwe people are called Osveba. These are stylized and abstract representations of an ancestors’ human form. Lines of descent are identified in the geometry created by carefully hammered motifs on copper strips. These reliquaries were placed on top of a relic box again made of bark. Wood or wicker or a wicker basket containing human bones. The prominent use of copper on these statuettes lends them a dazzling quality thought to repel enemies and bad spirits. Offerings were made to them in honor of the dead. Thus the relics became conduits between the world of the living and the dead. Some African reliquaries bare animal heads on the top of the wicker basket: monkeys or goats. As well as animal or human remains.Containers made of either bark or woven basketry are surmounted by sculpted figures known as eyema-o- byeri that guarded the remains of Fang ancestors(Fernandez 1975: 723-46)The relics in this figure are covered with cotton cloth and tied with vegetal fiber ropes. When not in actual use the sculpted figures were generally hidden fr
Antique/Vintage Coiled Basket with Lid - Possibly East African? Unusual item
Here is a rather unusual basket. I really know nothing about baskets so can only tell you what I see and what I have found on the internet. The basket is nice size. Approximately 11' tall and about 28" around the widest part near the base. The basket feels quite heavy for its size and is very dense and sturdy. It has a well worn look to it. I have only thought of the possibility of it being East African because on one of the decorations hanging off the side of the basket, there appears to be what looks like a crushed bottle top that very faintly appears to have'White Cap' written on it. Based on what I have found online, white cap is a beer brewed in East Africa- Kenya. The basket has one row of red weaved in around the bottom, and one row of green weaved in around the top- I have no idea what the significance of this is. ... moreIf you look at the top of the lid- you can see a pink plastic like cap which I assume was covered with some type of topper originally. I don't know how that pink plastic top comes into play when dating this piece. There are various pieces of beads, buttons, etc, dangling off the sides of the basket. Besides being worn, the basket is in great shape- there are no weak spots or holes, except for the one area I have shown in picture 9. The lid fits snugly into the basket. The basket, when sitting, definitely leans in one direction- don't know if that is intended or not. However, the lid is also woven deeper on one side than the other as shown in picture 7. It is a really cool looking basket. Please ask any questions you have and review all of the pictures. I can send additional photos if requested. Thanks for looking.

ANTIQUE AFRICAN BASKET with WOVEN WICKER & WOOD - CARVED ALLIGATOR
This antique basket was found at an estate in South Carolina. I was told that it was a typical African basket. It may be from around the Nile River as there is an alligator(or crocodile) carved on the side. I am no expert but it appears to be from the late 1800s or early 1900s. The bottom part is made of wood. Not a dense heavy wood, but a dense light wood. There is a carved alligator going all around the middle. The top of the basket is made of woven wicker. There is a woven wicker handle. The wicker lid has a wooden top with a carved duck or chicken or some type of bird. And there is a feather plume that is attached within a wicker slot. It stands about 15 inches tall and measures about 11 inches wide. It is in MINT and ORIGINAL condition. If someone recognizes this item, please email me with the details. THANKS!
