They also carve headrests, divination oracles, and anthropomorphic cups. In the 16th century. The Kuba peoples migrated from the distant north to their current location along the Sankuru River. When they arrived, however, they found that the Twa already lived there. The Twa were eventually absorbed into the Kuba Kingdom, but retained some independent cultural characteristics. The height of the Kingdom was during the mid-19th century. Europeans first reached the area in 1884, but the Kuba, being relatively isolated, were not as affected by the slave trade as many of the other peoples in the area. The Nsapo invaded during the late 19th century, and the Kingdom was broken up to a large extent. The Kuba oral history tells of the creation of the world by Bumba. Who decreed that the Bushoong would always be the ruling class. This creator god is not formally worshiped. Damage/Repair, general wear, Additional Information: This is an example a Kuba Bushoong Moshambwooy mask. Variants of such a mask are also found among thr the Ngoongo. Sub-group of Kuba people, where they are known as Mukyeem or mukenga mask. For a long time people used to call this type of masks moshambwooy. But there is a substantial difference between these two masks. Examples of Royal Moshambwooy mu Shall are very rare to find. Most of the s o-called Moshambwooy housed by public or private collections are of Ngongo workmanship type named Mukyeem mask. They all are helmet masks and decorated with a lot of cowrie shells and beads. On Mukyeem mask. The headdress is extended by a long, central, trunk-like appendage(sometimes with two offshoots) suggesting the elephant's tusk. Attached to the end of the trunk is raffia fibers, which can be replaced by a bright red, tuft of parrot feathers. Moshambwooy is usually topped with a high structure decorated with feathers. Antique Venetian Millefiori Matched African Trade Beads/73 Beads, 35"L,16MM
Beautiful strand of antique. Circa 1800's to early 1900's, African millefiori trade beads, originally made in Venice. Strand has 73 beads and is about 35" around. Each bead is 16mm in diameter. But all have different lengths and are cut at angles, so when strung they will lie flat together. The string they are on now is new so beads were probably restrung by the trader who originally sold them, but the combination of beads looks great and"ready to go" for restringing or necklace making. I'm guessing this may have been the original necklace combination worn by the native African owner. Beads came from the VERY large estate of a long time collector and dealer of African art. And most of his items were bought in the late 1960's and early 1970's when he had a gallery in Santa Fe. It has a beautiful carved wooden handle and long blonde colour real hair wisk, it also has what looks like very small silver colour rings on wire wrapped around the bottom of the handle but sadly some are missing and the ones left have a sort of white corrosion on them, the other little fault is the strap on the handle is not original also the strap is snapped, the whole thing is approx 23" long and other than the little faults that you would expect with age its in good original condition so good luck and thanks for looking!

Antique African Cane-Significant Markings
This is a very old African cane. I had purchased this with many other items from a woman's estate. She had traveled the USA and the world collecting many rare and interesting pieces. She mostly loved and collected early Americana. African and American Indian collectibles. The children of the estate have no interest in antiques, therefore all were offered for sale through private sales and auction. The cane measures appx. 42” long and is in wonderful condition for its age. I cannot be 100% certain of its origin but was also told it could possibly be Alaskan because of the handle which appears to be in the shape of a seals head. The body of the cane appears to resemble snake skin. The black markings seem to have been burned in on the surface. There are 5 hand carved circles into the wood on one side of the handle with 4 on the opposite ... moreside. There are a few round circles on each side of the body of the cane from top to bottom with other very small unidentified markings I was told these marks represent something and probably belonged to a tribesman with a higher power or authority. I have shown the cane to a few professionals but get mixed opinions. The cane is very old and has had lots of use. Is my source for this information. He is not a professional however he is very knowledgeable. From the carving methods. It appears to be from 50- 100 years old or more. Also it appears to be of rare size. Apparently carved for a child or small faced individual. Overall measurements 8" Tall x 6.75" wide. Very well fitted to a face with all openings clear. You can see through the eyes very well for a wood mask. The mouth provides plenty of air for dancing or. As you can see the mouth shape appears to have been crafted to accept a type of pipe or similar. This type of mask appears to represent fertility. Oil deposits inside the mask where it makes contact ... morewith the face are visible. All evidence leads to the assumption that this was genuinely used for many years before it was acquired. You will be bidding on a very old hand carved wooden African whole head mask. It is carved from one piece of wood. This mask was purchased in an antique shop in Tanzania in the early 1990s and belived to have been made in Mozambique. The wood is quite light in weight. It has intricate carving designs on the forehead. Temples, cheeks, chin, nose, and jawline. There is hair on a portion of the head that feels and looks like real hair. This mask measures about 10" by about 8" It would have to be a small head to fit into it. The eyes have no slits on the inside, but the teeth openings do go all the way through, so a person could breathe with the mask on. This mask would be held to the face by hand rather than any kind of strap. It is very realistic. The way it is made, it could be displayed hanging on a wall or sitting on a desk. RARE SONGE AXE probably 19th centuy Lenght 41cm A very nice example of a Songe axe. Just on 41cms tall. This axe has a lovely thick forged axe head with forge rolled upper and lower edges, nice crisp beveled cutting edge and geometric designs and piercings to the main portion of the blade. The entire shaft is covered in Waran(monitor lizard) skin that remains in excellent condition with a few small losses an tearing where the skin used to be stiched toghether- due to the natural shrinking(see the pics) These axes are both a symbol of prestige and also used as currency. Fine Antique Carved African Tribal Faux Ivory Bracelet/Bangle
Lovely old African bangle! Beautiful colouring and very clear natural cross-hatching. It is in exceptional condition for its obvious age with a stiking vertical band decoration on either side. I would guess it is more than 100 years old and made from ox bone/ faux ivory. It is approx. 6cm at its widest point in diameter and 5.5cm diameter at the smallest point. Approx 2.4cm wide The bangle is not a completely round shape. It is quite a small size. Possibly for a child? A rare item not to be missed! A truly fascinating mid 19th century Okpoho manilla or slave trade token. Salvaged from the Duoro shipwreck, dating to 1843. Manillas were a traditional African medium of exchange. Eventually they became known as slave trade money after Europeans began using them to acquire slaves from the African continent. This particular example was salvaged from the wreck of the Duoro. Lost on the Crewbathen rocks of the isles of Scilly, off the Southwestern tip of Great Britain in 1843. The ship left Liverpool, allegedly bound for Portugal with a cargo of textiles and munitions. However, when the wreck was discovered in 1973 the true cargo was found to be a large quantity of bronze Manillas. As the slave trade had been banned in Britain for over 36 years it is, therefore, thought the Duoro was actually bound for South Africa on an illegal slave trading ... morerun. This bracelet is genuinely very old- how old is beyond my expertise. I bought it as part jewellery lot at an auction house which recently sold the contents of a mansion house in West Wales. There were many ancient and valuable antiquities sold- most of them from ethnic and oriental origins. The family having travelled and collected extensively during their lives. This bracelet was included in a separate box of tribal jewellery to include currency bracelets and beaded necklace. Which I am currently selling.
