The Abelam are divided into the hill country, or northern Abelam, and the southern plains Abelam, or Wosera. The Abelam area was part of German New Guinea(Kaiser Wilhelmsland) from 1884 to 1914-1920 when Australia was given New Guinea as well as Papua under a United Nations' protectorate. Papua New Guinea gained independence in 1975. The early German administrators recognized and appointed village leaders. They gave them special hats and insignia which are still portrayed in some Abelam carvings; however, there was no significant contact with the outside world until the 1930s when gold was discovered. A hardwood carving depicting a hornbill stood on a base with a face engraved to the front. The carving comes from the Abelam people of New Guinea and has been painted with earth pigments which have muted with age. The side of the birds head has some damage which looks like it was caused by exposure to weather- see close up image. It stands 58cm high. An interesting and early yam mask from the Abelam people who live in the Maprik area in the East Sepik of New Guinea. Carved from balsa wood the head has layers of various paint from use in the ritual yam harvest. The reverse has a roughly cut out section where it would been attached to the yam. The Abelam and neighboring peoples of the Prince Alexander Mountains in the Sepik region of northeast New Guinea create several types of basketry masks. They include the type seen here. Known in the Abelam language as baba tagwa, which is worn over the head like a helmet, as well as tje yam masks used to decorate the gigantic long yams grown and exchanged competitively by Abelam men. Among the Abelam, baba tagwa masks are associated ... morewith the male initiation cycle, in which they are worn by men clad in shaggy costumes made from strips of leaves. During certain ceremonies, these imposing masked figures serve as guards. Brandishing lengths of bamboo or other weapons, the baba tagwa drive off women, children, and uninitiated men, who are not permitted to witness the secret initiation rites. From: Yam masks and Baba masks: ritual masks from Papua New-Guinea The Abelam people(app. 40.000 souls) live on the forested plains in northern Papua New Guinea. They link spiritual well-being and material survival in one cosmology. Which focuses in part on their staple vegetable crop: yams. At harvest they decorate large yams which can grow to two and three metres long. The decorated yams are displayed publicly and are exchanged between men. When decorated. The yams represent ancestral spirits called Nggwal. Nggwal spirits do not act by themselves. But must be encouraged with offerings, chants and decorations. Old Hand Carved Abelam. Maprik, or Wosera Cassowary Bone Dagger from Papua New Guinea Circa: 1970s 14 1/4 inches(37 cm) long x 1 3/4 inches(4.6 cm) in diameter at the top of the handle. Condition; Very Good: The item has a patina consistent with age and use. Description; Most cassowary bone daggers from New Guinea were used as an all-purpose utility tool and weapon that was needed in a culture without an abundance of material goods. This one may have had a ceremonial purpose. There was no collection history in the estate. The dagger came from the Berber collection of Reno. Nevada.
