HEAVY CARVED POLYCHROME SOLID WOOD SET ANTIQUE CHINESE DOORS GATE FRAME CORBELS
Talk about an unusual Charleston estate auction find. here is an incredible heavy carved polychrome solid wood Chinese door or heavy gate with a cross beam and side beam frame as well as the heavy raised panel doors with all their original iron fittings. This is an old Chinese door and is extremely heavy as well as somewhat primitive on the unfinished sides of the beams. The polychrome paint is quite worn but is still quite evident and adds so much character to an already gorgeous detailed yet functional heavy door. I have included a number of photographs in an attempt to accurately represent the design. Quality, condition and overall beauty of this delightful antique door. Unfotunately I do not know any additional provenance on the door or have any definitive explanation as to how it arrived in our fair city, though with it being a port ... morecity and with the sheer size and weight, my guess is whenever it came to the US, it was most assuredly by boat long ago. The standing door frame itself is 78 inches tall by 68 inches wide at it's widest points. At beams which extend and is constructed of huge beams 4 1/2 inches wide.The inside doorway entrance(inside the standing frame) is 63 1/2 inches tall and 39 1/4 inches wide, with a bottom crossbeam one would have to step over to enter. In addition there is a large crossbeam I believe goes overhead, hooking into the corbels, 68 inches long by 8 inches wide by 4 1/4 inches thick. There are also two side beams each 73 1/4 inches long by 6 1/2 inches wide by 3 inches thick and the two corbels, carved from blocks roughly 21 1/2 inches by 12 inches by 8 inches. The two raised panels doors, which shut from behind the door frame, are 74 1/2 inches tall and very heavy, ready for locking out the enemy. Penn Antique Restoration. 29"x79"x1.75" Antique Solid Oak Door w/2 Vertical Panels. Handsome. Antique, interior door salvaged from an old home in Northeastern Ohio. The door has a solid oak core covered with 3/16" thick, white oak veneers. The door has a light stain and worn finish on all sides. There are 2, long, vertical, recessed panels on both sides of the door. Also, please don't think that"veneer" means inferior quality. Unlike the paper-thin veneers used on modern doors and furniture. These veneers are almost 1/4" thick and provide strength and stability to the door. The door could be sanded and refinished several times before the door would need to be re-veneered. Hardware: Although the photos show some hardware installed; the door doesn't come equipped with any hardware. However. You are bidding on/ buying a pair of ANTIQUE SOLID WOOD SALOON SWINGING DOORS. The doors are a set/pair. One right and one left. Front and back sides photos 1& 2. I have a bag of mounting hardware that came with them. I am uncertain if every piece is there. I believe it is a complete original set of installation hardware. Photo 10. Both doors do have the top and bottom swing pegs in place. Photo 11. Both doors measure the same. Down the middle of the door. From the top of the crest to the bottom measures 43 inches. On the hinge/mounting side from top to bottom is 40 1/2 inches. The inside where the doors would meet measures from top to bottom 38 inches. The door is made of solid, Douglas Fir or pine, and is painted on both sides. It has a lovely arrangement of 15, true-divided, glass lites. The door was previously used as a"swinging door. which means that it had a spring-loaded, pivot hinge installed in it's bottom corner, and swung both forward and backward like a saloon style door. The door no longer has it's pivot hinge or push plates. However, just because it was used as a swinging door, doesn't mean that you have to. We could cut off the rounded sides and trim the door to 30"W, or we could cut and then add to the sides to widen it to 32" or wider. Each door features 3 recessed panels with red crosses over blue backgrounds at tops and bottoms and hand painted religious(Catholic) monograms(IHZ" on one door and"XPZ" on other. Both are latin, dating back to the sixth century, meaning Jesus) After hours upon hours of research. I have learned virtually nothing about these doors, nor have I found any like doors.nothing even close! Origin, age and original ... moreuse unknown. They certainly have an authentic old look& feel to them.but not quite 400-500 years old, as the materials& style would suggest. My best guess would be middle 19th to turn of the 20th century.I could be way off, either way. Another possibilitly is that the hinges, hardware, latch/lock, etc. could very well be 200 or more years old, used with replacement wood(again. Just speculation/guessing) Perhaps they are/where movie props? Or part of a TV/Theatrical Play's set? Picked from a Sussex County. N.J. estate. Previous owner told me he had recieved them from a contractor friend approximately 40 years ago and has had them in the breezeway ever since. Are joined together to make a room divider but come apart easily. Two measure 79 1/2" tall and 32" wide, One measures 78 3/4" tall and 31 3/4" wide and One measures 79 1/2" tall and 23" wide. The smallest door is a swinging door. It does have a cut out at the bottom where the hardware was to attach it to the floor. It also has a hole in the top edge of the door for the pin that held the top in place. It is missing it's hardware accept the doorknob plate. Set of 4 old original solid wood doors from 1920's bungalow local pickup only NR
Thanks for looking at my post. I have these 4 lovely old solid wood doors from up for sale FOR LOCAL PICKUP ONLY IN SPRINGFIELD, MO. Included are 2 each 24" x 79.5" doors and 2 each 30" x 79.5" doors. These have solid pine wood rails and stiles with a top and bottom plywood panel insert design. The mortise locks are included with each door, no backplates or door knobs come with though. There's also hinges on each door but I don't have the recieving jamb hinges or hinge pins for each door. All of these doors are painted both sides with at least a couple layers of paint. Overall they're in great shape, if you're interested in having the paint completely stripped off it shouldn't cost more than $40-50/door as I've had this done with other doors this size recently.
