10' Tall Glass Lite Window and Door Set from 1926 Western Union Building in NOLA
This is a fairly amazing and unique set of very thick and tall old pine windows and French doors. The set was salvaged from the 1926 Western Union building at 334 Carondelet St. in New Orleans in preparation for a planned condo conversion. These doors and windows are heavy. Commercial grade, and unusually tall. They are in excellent condition and have been stripped and cleaned. The entire set contains 21 separate pieces. As follows: 11 windows– 18 lites each: 47 ¼” x 123” x 2 ¼” thick 2 pair French doors– 12 lites each: 27 ¾” each of 4) x 123” x 2 ¼” 1 pair French doors– 8 lites each: 35” each) x 94 ½” x 2 ¼” plus: 1 rectangular transom with fan design: 23 ¾” x 71 ¾” 1 pair French doors– 8 lites each: 32” each) x 94 ½” x 2 ¼” plus: 1 rectangular transom with fan design: 23 ¾” x 65 ¾” ... moreWhen the transom windows are added to the top of the shorter French doors. Many people have a stigma for“veneers” and that is mostly due to contemporary furniture. Veneers have been used for millennia for the purpose of providing strength and stability to construction. Because oak is a dense hardwood, it is highly susceptible to warping. About 1% of all of the oak doors that we’ve come across have been ... moretruly, solid oak doors with no veneers, and most were warped as a result. The veneers used on this door are ¼” thick, which is the same thickness as the veneers used on most of the high-end, oak doors built during the late 1800’s. The sides of the door have ½” thick veneers, which conceal the 5/8” diameter dowels that we used to hold the rails and stiles together. The top and middle rails have 3, 5” L dowels and the bottom rail has 4 dowels. Most antique doors have decorative embellishments on the exterior side only. And the interior side is plain. We wanted our door to have plenty of details on both sides. The half-length lite is surrounded by a border consisting of 3 fluted pilasters, 2 corner blocks with routed grooves, and 1 stepped ledge under the window. There are 2 raised panels below with routed designs similar to the corner blocks above the glass. We made the window by hand by cutting pieces of glass from old windows. And shaping the came around them. We“cemented” the glass to the came, and added foam weather sealer around the edges of both sides of the glass to improve insulation. The door is made of wrought iron or steel and features 2 removable window panels with tempered, safety glass. On the exterior side of the door, there is a strip of lovely scrollwork spanning across the center of the door. Directly above and below the strip, are 3, vertical bars and a 2 beautiful, ornate vine, leaf, and acorn motifs. The door and details are painted black. Penn Antique Restoration. 30.5"x80" Antique Oak Pocket Door w/Full-length Window. Lovely. Antique, pocket door salvaged from an old home in Northeastern Ohio. The door has a solid oak core covered with 1/16" thick red oak veneers. Please don't think that"veneer" means inferior quality. Unlike the paper-thin veneers used on modern doors and furniture. These veneers are 1/16" thick and provide strength and stability to the door. Oak is a very dense wood and the door would've warped long ago if it weren't for its veneers. Antique Ornate Door With Etched Glass Window
While remodeling a turn-of-the-century home. I found this beautiful old door inside a wall. I cleaned it up, and put it in my home, but would like to sell it now. It measures 32 x 80 x 1.75 inches, has an etched glass window, and I would consider selling the trim along with the door. The trim is butternut, I think, and was not found with the door. The wood appears to be oak, and some pieces appear to be veneered. As I would not ship it due to the fragile nature of the glass, the buyer would have to pick it up in Georgetown, Illinois. If the top bid is $1000.00 or more, the butternut trim will be included with the door. Buyer resposible for detaching and removal.

The door has a solid wood core made of Douglas Fir covered with 1/16" thick oak veneers. Both sides of the door are painted. Please don't think that"veneer" means inferior quality. Unlike the paper-thin veneers used on modern doors and furniture. These veneers are 1/16" thick and provide strength and stability to the door. The door also has a full-length. Beveled glass lite and applied(raised) molding on the exterior side. Hardware: The door is not equipped with any hardware. However. W e have a good selection of period hardware in our eBay store. Some molding around the glass is chipped, and veneer is cracked and warped under the window. On the interior side. The top of each stile is chipped and has nail holes; molding is broken and missing; the edge of the lock housing is chipped; the bottom of each stile is chipped and has cracked veneer; and the bottom rail is slightly warped and has small cracks in it.
