Lot of Five(5) 1940s Flying Eagle US Post Office Box Doors Two Sizes $95.95 Buy It Now obo Five United States 1940s Flying Eagle post office box doors with frames. These were made during World War II in zinc because brass was needed by the military and its use was restricted. Zinc post office boxes were only made during WW II which makes them rare. Frames open and close easily. Two different sizes: three are small: 5" x 3 3/4" two are large: 6 1/4" x 5 1/2" Small box numbers: 683. 684, 694 Large box numbers: 725. 745. Note that numbers are fading. All dials turn. I do not have the combinations. Glass is in all doors. One small door. 694, has tape on the glass as shown in the photos. It is cracked. Post Office Box Doors This lot includes 4 US Post Office Box Doors. They have a working combination locks. Although one is missing a plate so it has only a 2 number combination. The doors swing open on the frame. At 5.5 inches 6.25 inches, they are made of diecast metal. Included are the glass viewing windows. The cross braces for the glass plate are missing on one door and the glass is held in place with tape. There is an embossed eagle with rays radiating outward on the doors. POST OFFICE MAIL BOX DOORS RARE ZINC COLLECTOR SERIES Three zinc mail box doors; all are#1 doors(small ones) They are of era WWII; the 1940's. These rare mail box doors are wonderful for mail box coin banks or jewelry boxes! Zinc was used for making mail box doors only during World War II when all copper containing alloys. Bronze/brass, were restricted due to their need for making shell cartridges. Remember zinc pennies! Traditionally, mail box doors had been made from bronze/brass material. The doors are listed on page 189 of the Illustrated Guide of Post Office Lockbox Doors by Jane H. Ingram. 2nd Edition. They were manufactured by Keyless Lock. We believe that very few post offices were being built or expanded during the war. Because everybody was heavily involved with the war effort. But apparently, these doors were urgently needed ... moreby an American oil company preparing a community for Americans in the Middle East. New mail box doors were only available in zinc. We purchased these old doors from an oil company when one of their abandoned mail facilities was demolished in 1999. The original doors probably had windows made of real glass. But on these doors the glass windows were removed at some point and replaced with Plexiglas. Note that the clips on the one of the doors has been replaced by your seller with a hand made clip. There is some paint left by a careless painter. The lock combinations are provided for you. The pictures tell the whole story of what is involved with these doors. The doors are 5” high X 3 5/8” wide. And the locking mechanism works well on all. Those that have bought them in the past have been very happy with them. They are the Grecian design# 1 size and measure 3 5/8 X 5 inches. They are dated 1963 0n the back. They have been cleaned and polished and are ready to go onto your project right out of the box. These doors are in superb condition considering that they are about 60 years old. The U.S. initials stand out nicely. This single dial#1 size door measures approximately 3.5 x 5 inches and is designed to mount on hinge pins attached to the post office box frame. These doors were originally made of brass. Due to war time materiel shortages these were re-manufactured in the 40s using a zinc alloy rather than brass. The light silvery color is a nice contrast to the standard brass doors. And should look very nice if used to make banks with a dark wood such as black walnut. What a great item for making banks. Small storage drawers, or just for use as a novelty. These are size 1 doors and the approximate dimensions are 3 5/8" X 5" I will include your choice of 4 new numbers per door so you can personalize the doors for birthdays. Offered this evening is a vintage(dated 1971) metal cabinet of Post Office Boxes once used in a United States Post Office. This metal cabinet measures approximately 23.5" across. 33" high and 15" deep. The cabinet has 18 slots which are open at one side and each has a locking PO Box door at the front side. There are 16 smaller doors(with windows) that measure approximately 5.25"x6" and 2 larger doors on the bottom row(no glass windows) that measure approximately 11.75"x6" The inside of the doors are marked AUTH ELEC 1971 The cabinet is dirty but in good condition- it has been painted white several times over the years. There are a few small areas with surface rust. But no rust thru- the cabinet is solid. 15 of the doors have a matching key, one of the smaller doors and the two large ones on the bottom are ... moremissing keys. Each are made of some type of metal(either brass or bronze) and have a beveled glass front window with numbers that are painted in gold. Red, white and black. This collectible piece is in original condition at time of reclamation with slight modifications. Constructed of solid steel throughout and featuring silvered brass doors. Unit is completely open at the back. Separating shelves/ walls also constructed of solid steel. There are sixteen smaller swing-out cells making up the top two rows. Sixteen larger flip-down cells making up the middle four rows, and eight large bin-style pull-out drawers making up the bottom two rows of this piece. It is constructed of solid oak w/ cast aluminum door fronts. There are 18 top unit flip down doors and 12 bottom drawers that slide out. They are all functional. You set the dial on A and turn the knob to the left and the door flips down. The aluminum door fronts were cleaned and brought back to their original lustre and shine. The outer edge trim was removed. Hand polished and clear coated. The wood case was sanded/stripped and refinished in a satin black ebony. The interior was cleaned and wiped out and left in the original oak finish. Overall a super cool piece with endless ... morepossibilities and character. This is for a lot of 4 vintage brass Post Office box doors. There is one. Corbin door dated 1966, one Oro Mfg Co. door dated 1965, one American Device door dated 1962, and one Ranco door dated 1968. Three of the doors are missing the glass and one has plexiglass but are otherwise complete. The combination lock on each door works good. The doors are used and have normal wear. Vintage US Post Office Box Doors with glass& combination Locks early 1900's This is a lot of 4 early 1900's PO box brass/ bronze doors with their frames. The exact year is uncertain 1900-1925. 5 1/4" x 3 1/4" fully functional. 3 of the doors have the left/ right combination locks. One of the doors has the back side of the combination mechanism removed, however, the latch mechanism works. These solid bronze doors have the original glass windows as well. They are in good. Antique condition and can be made into individual banks or used for whatever project you have in mind. I would not polish the bronze as they look much better with the natural patina of age.
