Description This is a door that were salvaged from a Philadelphia Victorian home. It is made of walnut and is painted on both sides. There is glass at the top. One has the original beveled glass and the other was replaced with flat glass. They have very ornate fronts. There are carved pediments above the glass. The shelves are trimmed in dentil molding below. The lower raised panels are trimmed in ornate moldings. They measure 47 inches wide by 87.25 tall and are 2.25 thick. Overall they are in good condition. There are misc. scratches and dings as they are antique. They could use a good cleaning. The astrigal needs work. There are 2 deadbolt holes and a mail slot. Antique, Walnut Spanish Double Entry Door
Bought this original antique walnut Spanish double door entry(made between 1800-1900) from Malaga Spain in 2000 from a famous local collector. All the information regarding the wood. Age and the origin was furnished by the collector. I never installed this door as it has been in the storage since 2000. The door originally was purchased to be installed in the custom Spanish home I designed and built. However the house was sold before the construction was completed and I decided not include it with the concurrence of the Buyer. The door has a solid, Douglas Fir core covered with 1/4" thick, hardwood veneers. I'm familiar with many wood types, but I'm unsure of this one. The grain most closely resembles walnut. The door if finished on the exterior side and painted white on the interior side. There is an unusual arrangement of 5 recessed panels on both sides of the door. Also, please don't think that"veneer" means inferior quality. Unlike the paper-thin veneers used on modern doors and furniture. Description This is a beautiful door that was salvaged from a Philadelphia Victorian Home. It is made of walnut and is currently painted. Each door has a panel of antique distorted Florentine Glass at the top. The bottoms have a raised panel with fluting. The moldings around the glass and panels are ornate Eastlake beveled. The back sides are less ornate with a raised panel at the bottom. The doorknobs will need to be replaced. The brass hinges are bent but can be straightened out if you want to use them. They measure 49.5 inches wide together. 84.5 inches tall and are 2.25 inches thick. Overall. They are in good condition. There are misc. scratches and dings as they are antique. I was told that this magnificent carved walnut panel was likely done by a 19th Century artist working in the style of Grinling Gibbons(1648-1721) When asked for the value, he simply said, I wouldn't undergo a project of this magnitude for less than a 100 thousand dollars" don't worry, I'm not asking that much! Gibbons was famous for giving wood"the loose and airy lightness of flowers. His flamboyant cascades of life-like blossoms, fruit, foliage, birds and fish dominate English interiors of the late 17th century such as Windsor Castle, Hampton Court Palace, St. Paul's Cathedral and a number of country homes. Gibbons broke away from the typical bas-relief carvings of other artists and is noted ... morefor his excavations and deep interior modeling. At the start of his career, he worked with single blocks of wood or laminated various blocks together to give him the depth he wanted. In the later part of his career, the assemblage of separate carvings is the key principal behind the design of Gibbon's spectacular work with it's elegant symmetries and thin planar structures(loosely translated from David Esterly's excellent book, Grinling Gibbons And The Art of Carving) This panel measures 75-3/8" long. 26-7/8" high. Some of the carved design elements project 3" beyond the surface of the panel. Gibbons typically carved from limewood; the artist who carved this panel chose walnut. Judging from the photos you can see the elaborate, life-like details incorporated into an elegant overall design balanced with large whorls of carved acanthus leaves. This is in great condition(with aged patina) but there are some missing details(see photos) that do not detract from the overall design. This beautiful carved antique panel is from France and it dates to the late 1800's. It was originally a framed woodcarving. It is made entirely out of solid walnut. The figure in the middle is finely carved and quite expressive. The entire panel is finished to a warm dark honey color. It is in very good antique condition with only minor nicks and scratches.
