THREE #1 VINTAGE/ANTIQUE ZINC POST OFFICE MAIL BOX DOORS W/FLYING EAGLE
POST OFFICE MAIL BOX DOORS RARE ZINC COLLECTOR SERIES Three zinc mail box doors; all are#1 doors(small ones) They are of era WWII; the 1940's. These rare mail box doors are wonderful for mail box coin banks or jewelry boxes! Zinc was used for making mail box doors only during World War II when all copper containing alloys. Bronze/brass, were restricted due to their need for making shell cartridges. Remember zinc pennies! Traditionally, mail box doors had been made from bronze/brass material. The doors are listed on page 189 of the Illustrated Guide of Post Office Lockbox Doors by Jane H. Ingram. 2nd Edition. They were manufactured by Keyless Lock. We believe that very few post offices were being built or expanded during the war. Because everybody was heavily involved with the war effort. But apparently, these doors were urgently needed ... moreby an American oil company preparing a community for Americans in the Middle East. New mail box doors were only available in zinc. We purchased these old doors from an oil company when one of their abandoned mail facilities was demolished in 1999. The original doors probably had windows made of real glass. But on these doors the glass windows were removed at some point and replaced with Plexiglas. Note that the clips on the one of the doors has been replaced by your seller with a hand made clip. There is some paint left by a careless painter. The lock combinations are provided for you. The pictures tell the whole story of what is involved with these doors. The doors are 5” high X 3 5/8” wide. And the locking mechanism works well on all. Those that have bought them in the past have been very happy with them. Please feel free to contact me with any of your questions you might have. I package well but will not be liable for loss or damaged doors. Have yourself a huge piece of US history! This 63 door unit measures 43.5 inches tall by 32.75 wide and at the top is 8.75 inches deep and the bottom for the bigger boxes is 13 inches deep. I am unsure of the age of this mail box unit. All doors say U S on them. Have 2 dials with letters, no numbers, for combinations. The front of all of the doors also say PATENT, but no year. This is 100% original! 40 of the small doors all have Beveled glass windows in them measuring about 2.5 x.5 inches, the other 14 small doors are missing the glass. 3 of the 6 medium size doors have beveled glass windows measuring 2 x 2.5. Here I have a lot of 8 original US Post office box doors. I believe these are from the 30s or 40s. And I believe they are brass(not 100% sure) These are the very sought after doors with"US" stamped on them. Really incredible looking pieces of history. All are complete with no cracked glass. Original Antique Oak Post Office This huge post office is from late 1800's to 1875. It was made by Georgia Showcase Co. The owner purchased it from Atkins. Alabama. It is made from the quatersawn oak. Frame measurements are over 37 feet wide and 71/2 feet high. The depth of frame is about 5" wide. It contains original brass lockboxes or mailboxes. I counted 360 Brass mailbox doors. About 8 doors have missing glass or inserts. Check out the Teller windows which also includes a Notary Public. Each with double combinartion locks. They are attached with hinges to the wooden side of the original box. Four of the five are complete while one is missing the small glass window. Each door measures 3" width x 1" depth x 5" height and the whole set including the wooden side weighs 3 pounds 6 ounces. Discovered at a recent estate sale. They are in the condition as pictured above. I have not cleaned them, so their appearance would be much improved with some TLC. Antique 14 Box Post Office Mail Box Cabinet, Bronze doors with keys
Absolutely wonderful original old postal cabinet with 14 brass faced locking post boxes all with original keys and housing. Cabinet measures 26" tall by 23.5" wide by 14" deep. Twelve standard 6 x 5 inch boxes and two larger 6 by 11 inch boxes all with original brass doors and keys. Some boxes even have two keys! Heavy steel cabinet with top. Bottom and sides, these never came with a back so the postmaster could insert letters from behind. You can of course add a back if you want an enclosed case. Antique USPS Eagle #3 post office mail box doors 35 brass flying eagles
There are 35 eagle number 3 post office doors in this lot. The numbers run consecutively number 36 thru number 70 I am going to sell them as a block. As you can see in the photos. The majority of the doors are not connected to the box and this is the way they will sell, just as you see them in the photos. I did not take photos of all the drawers but they are just as you see the ones that are connected and the one I pulled out at random, all in excellent condition. The painted numbers show some loss of paint but otherwise they are like the one in the photo. The changing or identifying the combination will be up to the buyer. I did the one in the single photo and it didn't take long. These will have to be picked up here at my place.
