HEAVY CARVED POLYCHROME SOLID WOOD SET ANTIQUE CHINESE DOORS GATE FRAME CORBELS
Talk about an unusual Charleston estate auction find. here is an incredible heavy carved polychrome solid wood Chinese door or heavy gate with a cross beam and side beam frame as well as the heavy raised panel doors with all their original iron fittings. This is an old Chinese door and is extremely heavy as well as somewhat primitive on the unfinished sides of the beams. The polychrome paint is quite worn but is still quite evident and adds so much character to an already gorgeous detailed yet functional heavy door. I have included a number of photographs in an attempt to accurately represent the design. Quality, condition and overall beauty of this delightful antique door. Unfotunately I do not know any additional provenance on the door or have any definitive explanation as to how it arrived in our fair city, though with it being a port ... morecity and with the sheer size and weight, my guess is whenever it came to the US, it was most assuredly by boat long ago. The standing door frame itself is 78 inches tall by 68 inches wide at it's widest points. At beams which extend and is constructed of huge beams 4 1/2 inches wide.The inside doorway entrance(inside the standing frame) is 63 1/2 inches tall and 39 1/4 inches wide, with a bottom crossbeam one would have to step over to enter. In addition there is a large crossbeam I believe goes overhead, hooking into the corbels, 68 inches long by 8 inches wide by 4 1/4 inches thick. There are also two side beams each 73 1/4 inches long by 6 1/2 inches wide by 3 inches thick and the two corbels, carved from blocks roughly 21 1/2 inches by 12 inches by 8 inches. The two raised panels doors, which shut from behind the door frame, are 74 1/2 inches tall and very heavy, ready for locking out the enemy. These huge teak château doors dating to around 1850c were recently removed from the French Embassy in Jakarta when new security doors were added. The front boasts a grand 19th Century appearance which alone is impressive enough. However when you turn to see the back of the doors you find and incredible pair of life size paintings of what is believed to be a King and Queen. The detail is just remarkable. And apparently painted in real gold although this has not been tested. Large antique doors without the interesting background and without the stunning artwork alone are rather sort after. Antique Doors - Asian Chinese Japanese Scene Mounted For Display
I bought these doors at an estate sale in the hamptons in the 90's. I was told they were from a really old chest of doors and were from Japan. There are no markings. And I would call the condition shabby chic. The good news is there is no damage to the painted scene or the raised wood on the man and the maiden. The paint on the carved bamboo is worn and the back has a bit of the lacquered wood removed. The scene was originally mounted on boards. In addition now the back is held together with a piece of plywood. I have to say it is amazingly beautiful in person-better than the photos. The 2 center doors have pivots. And the other doors are fixed. Each door panel has painted red framework and is divided into 5 sections. The Top. Middle and bottom section are small flat panels, with one larger flat panel in the bottom section. Each of the flat panels are painted very dark brown with some lighter color mixed in to give the panels a tortoiseshell type look. The larger upper section is an open panel with an unusual shaped open ... morewood frame in the center. That frame is held in place with a series of 6 carvings. The 2 carvings on each side are bats. As common symbol for good luck. The top and bottom carvings are each a pair of overlapping geometric shapes. The header of the frame is a sign that has a red frame and is divided into 3 sections. The sign can be translated loosely to say"He saw the view. All the grass is very high" meaning many years old. This may be similar to the saying that Rome was not built in a day.
