The New Great Atlas[Cedid atlas tercümesi] was the first Islamic world atlas to be based in the European style. Printed in Istanbul in the year 1803 by the Ottoman Military Engineering School[Tab'hane-yi Hümayun] and was bound with Mahmud Raif Efendis geographic study on the maps entitled Ucaletü'l-cografiyye. The maps themselves were based on William Fadens[1749-1836] plates for his General atlas. First printed in London, 1797. Mahmud Raif Efendi composed his eighty page commentary in French while the private secretary to the Ottomon ambassador in London. The commentary was then translated into Turkish. The atlas was part of Sultan Selim IIIs"Nizam-i cedid" or New order] Which was an attempt to incorporate European knowledge and administration in to the Ottoman system. The place names on the maps are transliterated into the Arabic script and all of the Christian symbols have been erased. Armenia et Syria 32.5 cm x 27.5 cm copperplate engraving. 35 cm x 29 sheet size, original hand colour, Friedrich Campe, Nürnberg, 1853 We are pleased to offer this elegantly designed historical map of what is now Turkey. Armenia, Syria and environs as constituted during the Roman Empire. The map was originally compiled by the German geographer(1758-1837) for his 1824 Historical Atlas Orbis Terrarum Antiquus. Reichard collaborated with(1775-1836) on the first edition of Stieler's famous Handatlas which of course became in its many editions the leading German cartographic publication of the 19th century and well into the 20th as well. This state of the map is from the 1853 Sixth Edition of Reichard's Orbis Terrarum Antiquus and was prepared under the direction of the historian and scholar(1798-1878) As a professor at ... morethe University of Leipzig in the 1820s Forbiger established and taught a new course- Geography of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome" which made use of Reichard's first edition. Thus making Forbiger ideally suited to sustain the work through subsequent posthumous editions. As is evident in this example, the maps are beautifully designed and quite finely engraved- Forbiger elected to produce revised plates for this edition using the medium of steelplate engraving as opposed to the earlier copperplate maps, allowing for exceptionally minute detail. Meticulously engraved with judicious yet vivid original hand colour, this scholarly and exceptionally decorative map will make a fine presentation if matted and framed. The hachure engraving for topography is quite distinctive- a considerably finer line than the contemporary copperplate maps issued for the Stieler atlases. The maps shows the region Turkey. Cyprus and the Turkeys Greece islands, a mile scale, Meriadus cartouche and a title cartouche at lower image. This pressure comes from published by Hendrik Hondius Jansonius in 1638 in Amsterdam. Under the leadership of Janssonius the Hondius Atlas was steadily enlarged. Renamed Atlas Novus. It had three volumes in 1638, one fully dedicated to Italy. 1646 a fourth volume came out with"English County Maps" a year after a similar issue by Willem Blaeu. Janssonius' maps are similar to those of Blaeu, and he is often accused of copying from his rival, but many of his maps predate those of Blaeu ... moreand/or covered different regions. By 1660, at which point the atlas bore the appropriate name"Atlas Major" there were 11 volumes, containing the work of about a hundred credited authors and engravers.
