Kingdoms, States, Principalities, Engraved and Carefully Selected from the latest and most Approved Authors by James Wallis(London: Oddy. 1811) A facsimile copy of the title page is included for authenticity. The date of 1811 is actually on the cover of the Atlas. Oddy's name and London publishing address is in the bottom center and"Engraved by J. Wallis" appears in the bottom right margin. The map is being sold as a single individual sheet as seen in the first pic: it is not mounted, matted nor framed. Size: The map image measures. From neat line to neat line, approximately 8 3/4 by 10 1/2 inches(22x26cm) and is on a 10 1/4 by 13 1/4" 26x33cm) page as seen in the pic with a wide margin all around for framing as seen in the main pic. Condition: The map is in Good condition with overall light tonal ageing. Blank on the reverse, printed on nice quality cotton rag paper that is very strong and well preserved. It is basically as seen in the pics with a few minor spots in the margins, a bent upper corner and some offset backprinting as can be seen in the pics, otherwise the map image is very clean and would frame up nicely with a desired antique patina. The binding side has been left untrimmed with the string holes visible along the edge as seen, one could easily trim the edge if desired. The pics are accurate of the actual map. Turcici Imperi Imago 47.5 cm x 34 cm copperplate engraving. 55 cm x 43 cm sheet size, modern hand colour, Amsterdam, engraved 1606, printed 1619 We are pleased to offer this scarce example of the beautifully engraved map of Turkey and environs(Van der Krogt 8110:1A) compiled by(1563-1612) from the 1619 French edition of the famous Mercator-Hondius Atlas. Hondius based the map on the 1570"Natoliae" map of Abraham Ortelius. Which in turn was based on a map issued in 1564 by the Piedmontese geographer Giacomo Gastaldi. Hondius purchased the map copperplates of the renowned Gerard Mercator(1512-1594) from Mercator's heirs and with those legendary maps as a foundation he added maps of his own such as this classic map which was introduced to the atlas in 1606. A practice later continued by his son Henricus Hondius and his brother ... morein law Jan Jansson that allowed the eventual publication of nearly 50 editions in multiple languages of the Mercator-Hondius atlas. A much sought-after map, t his exceptionally well preserved example exhibits hand colour work of the very finest calibre and will make a superb presentation if matted and framed. We begin our survey of the map with a view of Constantinopple and environs where an elegant dhow with an Ottoman banner sails the Black Sea. Several trademark engraving styles employed by Jodocus Hondius are present on the map such as the moiré pattern for water. ASIA MINOR. A highly decorative map of Asia Minor originally issued by John Tallis. Probably one of the best known map-makers and publishers of the 19th Century. The maps were published circa 1850 and are considered the last series of decorative maps of the world, Contained within an elaborate border the maps were generally decorated with vignettes and scenes depicting particular views and local inhabitants. The present map of"Asia Minor" dates from a later publication circa 1865 and has no vignettes, but retains the decorative border. The map was drawn and engraved by John Rapkin. From which this map comes, was published in Paris in 1812 and was one of the best and most up-to-date atlases of the early-19th century. It used charming vignette scenes in the title, a practice to be copied by other French mapmakers and the John Tallis company in England. The SDUK began its map publishing project under the leadership of Captain Francis Beaufort R.N. in 1829, and published the maps in parts, haltingly, over the next 15 years, completing the series in 1844, finally permitting the publication of a whole atlas. Many of the maps were actually drawn by Beaufort, who at the time was the Hydrographer to the Royal Navy, and all were closely supervised by him. J. C. Walker worked closely with Beaufort in engraving the maps.
