Being Turkey, Arabia, Persia, most of India and Tartary. Description: A curious and uncommon four panel wall map 1755 map of India. Persia, and Arabia by the English publisher M. Postlethwayte. Published in four separate panels, this map can be either joined as a single massive map as assembled, as above, in separate panels. As a whole the map centers on Persia, covering from Istanbul to eastern India and Tibet, and from the Black Sea to the Maldives. Postlethwayte derived this map from the influential French cartographer J. B. B. d'Anville's similar map of 1751, which here has been re-engraved, updated, and translated into English by S. Bolton. If offers excellent coverage ... moreof the central Asian portions of the Silk Route naming the centers of Samarkand, Bukhara, Lop Nor, and others. At the bottom center there is a decorative title cartouche of a rococo ethic. As this map was being edited, the eastern portions including Turkey, Arabia, and most of the modern day Middle East, were under the waning hegemony of the Ottoman Empire. In Arabia, the first'Saudi State' had already been established in 1744 and, though owing nominal allegiance to Istanbul, dominated much of the central Arabian Peninsula. The presumably more valuable costal lands and river valleys of Mesopotamia(modern day Iraq) remained under direct Ottoman suzerainty. Persia at this time was itself experiencing the early years of the short lived Zand Dyansty who ruled from the capital city of Isfahan– identified here. The Zand ruled Persia for roughly 50 years until, in 1794, Aga Muhammad Khan overthrew Loft Ali Khan, last Shah of the Zand Dynasty, and relocated the capital to the new city of Terhan. The subsequent era, the Qajar Dynasty, witnessed numerous military conflicts, the rising powers of Imperial Russia, and the loss of much of Persia's territory. India meanwhile was qui

Vintage 19th century antique map of Persia and Arabia
This is a lovely example of AJ Johnson's 1862 map of the Middle East and Persia. This rare map appeared only in the earliest editions of his New Illustrated Family Atlas and features the Ottoman Asia and the Arabian Peninsula. As well as modern Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan. Three decorative vignettes feature images of the Omani capital, Muscat, along with the castle and port of Smyrna and Trebisond on the Black Sea. It features the strapwork style border common to Johnson’s atlas work from 1860 to 1863. It measures 14 by 18 inches and is in fine shape but for some slight foxing and some small tearing in the margins, none of which intrude on the image. Alvin Jewett Johnson(1827- 1884) was a prolific American map publisher active from 1856 to the mid-1880s. He was born into a poor family in Wallingford. Vermont and received only a basic public ... moreeducation. He got his first taste of the map business as a salesman and book canvasser for J. H. Colton and company. The earliest Johnson maps were published and date to the mid-1850s. But it was not until 1860 that his firm published its first significant work, the Johnson's New Illustrated Family Atlas. The first Johnson atlas maps were mostly reissues of earlier maps published by the J H Colton firm, and early on Johnson himself described his firm as the"Successors to J H Colton and Company" Following the outbreak of the American Civil War the Johnson and Browning firm moved their office from Richmond. Virginia to New York City and published two editions of the Johnson Atlas in 1860 and 1861. Sometime in 1861 Browning's portion of the firm was purchased by Benjamin P. Ward, whose name subsequently replaced Browning's on the imprint(this map features the Ward name) The Family Atlas went through roughly 27 years of publication. From 1860 to 1887, outliving Johnson himself who died in 1884. Johnson maps from the Family Atlas are notable for their unique borders, of which there are four different designs, the"strapwork borer" from 1860 to 1863

This is an 1871 engraved map of Turkey in Asia. Persia, Arabia, Egypt and the Nile Countries. It measures 12.5 X 17 inches. Has nice circular inset of Paris. Published by T. Edward Zell. Philadelphia. Map was engraved by J. Bartholomew. For history of the famous Bartholomew maps, see last paragraph below. We are unable to find many of these maps in the major dealers sites. The ones we did find had prices of $200- $500 and up and were not in as good a condition as this map. Be my guest. Go look for yourself. Paper shows minor age spots. The presumably more valuable costal lands and river valleys of Mesopotamia(modern day Iraq) remained under direct Ottoman suzerainty. Persia at this time was itself experiencing the waning years of the short lived Zand Dyansty who ruled from the capital city of Isfahan- identified here. Within 50 years of this maps issue, in 1794, Aga Muhammad Khan would overthrow Loft Ali Khan, last Shah of the Zand Dynasty, and relocate the capital to the new city of Terhan. The subsequent era, the Qajar Dynasty, witnessed numerous military conflicts with the rising powers of Imperial Russia and the loss of much of Persia's territory. India meanwhile was quickly falling under the control of the British East India Company who, from a few coastal outposts, were rapidly asserting their authority over most of the subcontinent, leaving only the Sultana

Niebuhr and was published in"Atlas universel pour l'étude de la géographie et de l'histoire ancienne et modern" in Paris in 1787. The map is adorned with a large. Floral-style, title cartouche. In 1761 Carsten Niebuhr(1733-1815) A surveyor, joined a Danish scientific expedition, including seven European orientalists, linguists, artists and naturalists. Having spent a year in Egypt they left Suez in 1762 in disguise, travelling down the Red Sea coast of Arabia to Yemen in an open boat. However malaria struck the expedition and by 1764 Niebuhr was the only surviving European. He continued alone, visiting Muscat. Shiraz, ... morePersepolis, Babylon, Baghdad, Mosul, Aleppo, Cyprus, and Jerusalem, before returning to Constantinople and crossing Europe to Denmark. His account was published with the financial aid of King Christian VII, to whom the book is dedicated. Niebuhr’s Arabian maps corrected some of the details of D’Anville’s maps of 1751. This auction is for an original maps of the Middle Eastern countries pan from Johnson's New Illustrated Family Atlas of the World. By Prof. A.Guyot. These maps show a number of countries, that have since changed. Both maps are very nice and show very well. These maps were given to me from an estate to sell. I say this for transparency. As I will not be of much help in grading the shape of the maps. However, I will answer any question as quickly as I can. I do have the entire book(covers are in very poor condition) but it has already been split up. Second, it was published in Boston and influenced the city's rise as a publishing center later in the 19th century(at the time most publishing in the United States was restricted to New York and Philadelphia) Third, this atlas was the first to contain a separate and specific map showing the Republic of Texas. Fourth and finally, Bradford's atlas in some instances broke the Euro-centric mold regarding atlas production.
