The American Cartographer, Charles Desilver, bought the copyrights and plates of Mitchell's atlas of the same name and updated the maps and made some minor changes particularly ... morein the title block, added his own border style, choices of color and published the atlas from 1856 to 1859. The run of the Desilver atlas was more limited in number than the previous Cowperthwait publishing, thus the Desilver maps are the rarest of all the Mitchell maps published and difficult to find. It is from Morse and Gaston's Diamond Atlas. Published in New York by Samuel Gaston. 1857. A facsimile copy of the title page will also be included for authenticity. It is by Samuel Gaston and Sidney Morse, the brother of Samuel Morse, the inventor of the telegraph. Their father was Jedidiah Morse, also a mapmaker and publisher in New York. The map is not mounted, matted nor framed, being sold as a single sheet as seen in the pic. Overall, a nice antique miniature map that would frame up nicely! Condition: The map is in Very Good condition for its age with overall tonal aging and original hand coloring as issued. There is some minor wear along the edge and corners.
