Map of Ancient Persia by Herman Moll 1739. Hand Color Herman Moll(1654? 1732) was an engraver. Cartographer& publisher. Moll moved to England in 1678& opened a book& map store in London. He produced maps from his studies of the work of other cartographers. This map of ancient Persia at the time of Cyrus the Great was published in London in 1739. It shows western Asia with Ecbatana. Cyrus's capital, as the center. Greece is to the extreme west, is at this point in history, an inconsequential area of warring city-states. Map measures 11" x 7" Excellent condition. A note on hand coloring: The subject of the age and provenance of hand coloring when dealing with examples of incunabula and early printing is a recurrent and confusing one. Gutenberg’s first Bible was printed with the expectation that the first initials of paragraphs and the margins of the pages themselves would be hand colored with decorative and fanciful designs in the medieval style as all codices had been since the fall of the Western Roman Empire. 2 Persia ancient modern color maps plate 1880s Encyclopedia Britannica 9th ed vg
I was given a complete set(minus the index) of the 1880s ninth edition Encyclopedia Britannica. I considered selling the set but half the bindings were falling apart and some articles had inked underlining. So it was not really very nice. So instead I have removed all of the nice color plates and some of the more interesting articles with them. A few were damaged so a few will not be offered. I am happy to combine shipping if you win multiple items, but it will likely take months to list them all. They are all originals. I did my best to cut or tear them as close to spine as possible to make mounting or framing easier, but sometimes little tears formed or they did not pull out properly. I will try to show that in photos. Note also that bifold or two page opening maps often have a jagged looking spine edge because they were attached to a piece ... morethat was"tipped in" glued) in, so that does not mean any harm was done to the center seam of the map, I will point out if the map is damaged.
