A scarce engraved and beautifully printed engraved print from the mid-19th century by a master of engraving technique. This particular type of highly skilled hand engraving upon metal plate printing process is now essentially extinct as method of reproducing popular portrait images. Rendering this printed leaf an interesting original artifact from a past era. Printed on quality heavy stock period paper which may show typical gentle signs of age. Perhaps some minor light spotting or foxing, but retains its inherent structural flexibility and soundness. In Very Good or better antiquarian condition. It is from the 1874 edition of Stieler's Hand Atlas. Published in Gotha by Justus Perthes. The map is by the great German cartographer of the era. Augustus Petermann(1822-1878) best know for Petermann’s geographische Mitteilungen. The leading geographical journal of the day supplying the world with maps and information on newly explored regions around the world including the Arctic and Africa. His maps were certainly among the most accurate and detailed of the period and led the way to a new school of cartography often referred to as the"Gotha School. ... moreHis maps continued to be used and revised for years after his death in 1878 and his Mitteilungen continued until 2004. After 1865. Petermann was given the responsibility of the cartography for the Stieler Atlas and in coordination with other cartographers in the firm, he guided the production of the atlas until his death overseeing the designs and revisions based on recent discoveries. The publisher and date are shown on the map in the bottom margin and the name of the atlas is in the upper right corner and Petermann's name in the upper left corner. The map is not mounted nor matted, being sold as a single sheet with a centerfold as seen in the first pic. Size: The map image measures approximately 13 by 16 inches(33x41cm) on a 15 by 18 1/2" 38x47cm) page as seen in the pic with a wide margin all around for framing as seen in the main pic. Condition: The map is in Fair condition with plate marks embossed in the margins. Blank on the reverse, original hand coloring and a centerfold as issued, printed on heavy paper. It is designed by Richard Palmer as stated in the bottom right margin and the publishing info is in the bottom center. It is from the Palmer's The Bible Atlas of Sacred Geography Delineated(London: Baldwin& Cradock. 1831) A facsimile copy of the title page is included for authenticity. The map is not mounted, matted nor framed, being sold as a single sheet as seen in the main pic. Overall, a very nice rare map with original hand color that would frame up nicely. Size: The map image measures. From neat line to neat line, approximately 5 3/4 by ... more8 3/4 inches(14x22cm) and is on a 8 by 9" 20x22cm) page as seen in the pic with a wide margin all around for framing as seen in the main pic. Condition: The map is in Good condition with overall tonal ageing. Blank on the reverse, printed on a strong buff paper with a centerfold as issued. There is a half inch split at the end of the centerfold in margin only, and some very light backprinting as seen in the pic, see the pics for more on condition.
