The map stretches from the Caspian to the Red Sea and from Cyprus to the Persian Gulf. Münster's magnum opus, the encyclopedic Cosmographia featured thousands of eclectic and vivid woodcut images: portraits. Town views, curiosities, monsters, scenes of everyday life as well as dramatic and sometimes horrific reconstructions of historic ... moreevents. But it was also so successful because of its many woodcut maps, which as we shall see came to be something of a marketing challenge for Münster's eventual successor, the Basel-based publisher(1546-1627) In 1530 Münster married the widow of printer Adam Petri and the production of the Cosmographia was undertaken by her son Heinrich Petri. With demand for the book undiminished. His son Sebastian Heinrich had taken over the publication by the 1570s. However, with the advent of the magnificent copperplate engraved maps and atlases published by Ortelius and others the original woodcut maps of the Cosmographia dating back to the 1540s were in some cases erroneous and out of date. More importantly. Though, in comparison to the new copperplate maps and their ornate engraving work many of the old woodcut maps of the Cosmographia were truthfully rather crude in appearance. This example of"historical cartography" was presented in the Parergon section of the Theatrum. Where Ortelius notes that his historical maps"are published separately from the Theatrum. Where places are shown as they are in the present day" and that he"includes them as a supplement at the instigation of friends. No matter the self-effacing introduction, it is evident that Ortelius put far more personal effort into the maps of the Parergon than the"present ... moreday" maps of the Theatrum which in most cases were entirely composed by other cartographers. In the richly detailed historical maps of the Parergon. Ortelius was able to employ his vast scholarship and deep appreciation of the classical world into extraordinary cartographic presentations of places, events and stories of"the ancients" as they were understood in the Renaissance. One of the most unusual of Ortelius maps, the principal map is based on the circa 1st century A.D. Periplus of the Erythraean Sea and charts the northwest coast of Africa. The Arabian Sea, India and the Bay of Bengal with a barely recognizable Malaysian Peninsula and Sumatra- all as it was known to the ancient world around the first century of the Common Era. Twin circular inset maps chart the cities founded by the Carthaginian explorer on the African coast beyond the Strait of Gibraltar and the north polar region with a speculative polar continent. 1692 Muller Map- Anatolien Johann U. Muller was responsible for a world geography. Geographia totius orbis compendaria' containing some of the smallest maps ever printed. The 103 tiny maps were probably engraved by Gabriel C. Bodenehr and were published by Georg Kuhnen in Ulm, Germany in 1692. This map comes from that edition. The map includes the regions of Natolia. Cyprus, Turcomania, Syria, Diarbeck, and the Holy Land. Major cities are noted, the topography is illustrated. There is fine detail for such a tiny map. The map measures 2.5" by 3" on a full page of text. And has later outline hand colouring, and is in good condition except for printer's creases at the left side of the map.
