John Speed was the most famous of all English map-makers. He published an atlas of the counties of Britain, entitled"The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine" in 1611 and followed it with'Prospect of the most famous parts of the world' in 1627. His original maps are highly prized and fetch many hundreds of pounds when they come on the market. This is an 1871 engraved map of Turkey in Asia. Persia, Arabia, Egypt and the Nile Countries. It measures 12.5 X 17 inches. Has nice circular inset of Paris. Published by T. Edward Zell. Philadelphia. Map was engraved by J. Bartholomew. For history of the famous Bartholomew maps, see last paragraph below. We are unable to find many of these maps in the major dealers sites. The ones we did find had prices of $200- $500 and up and were not in as good a condition as this map. Be my guest. Go look for yourself. Paper shows minor age spots. Normal on most maps this age due to paper content. We have shown in the scans of the map and close ups to get a great idea of the beauty of the gentle coloring and detailed engraving. The colors are bright and make the maps stand out better than most when viewed at a distance. Most of the maps are absolutely spotless with not foxing or marks of any kind. A few maps have a few minor marks and tears in the margins. Mark on the map itself, or tear extending into the map area, is noted in red in each listing. Remarks The Imperial Atlas maps are among the most beautiful maps made in mid-late 19th century Britain. The engraving is finely detailed and the hand-coloring in outline is bold and still very bright. These maps are large and impressive and are listed at prices well above $100 each on some websites.
