Iudaea seu Palaestina ob sacratissima Redemtoris vestigia hodie dicta Terra Sancta prout olim In Duodecim Tribus Divisa. 56.5 cm x 48.5 cm copperplate engraving. 59 cm x 51 cm sheet size, original hand colour, Nuremberg, 1707 We are pleased to offer this scarce example of the first map of the Holy Land divided into the 12 Tribes published by the renowned Johann Baptist Homann(1663-1724) This first state of the plate(Laor# 340) was issued prior to Homann's appointment as Royal Geographer in 1715. A somewhat ironic title as although he was unsurpassed as a master engraver Homann was not really a true cartographer and his maps were typically close copies of earlier maps, usually French, which he reworked with flamboyant cartouches and vignettes as is the case here. The cartography and even the title of the map is in fact copied from the ... more1696 map of the Holy Land by Guillaume Sanson(1633-1703) with Homann's bold and dramatic decorative elements making up more than a quarter of the plate. A true masterwork of the engraver's art, this well-preserved example will make a fine presentation if matted and framed. The enormous title cartouche presents a central image of Moses receiving the Ten Commandments with a vignette at left of the Israelites worshiping the Golden Calf and a scene at right of manna falling from heaven to the encamped Israelites during the years of wandering the desert: Twin putti present the dramatic title"banner" which gives credit to Sanson as author of the map: At lower right Moses and Aaron are seen viewing an inset map of the desert wanderings of the Israelites. While soldiers carry a bundle of dates: Map extends as far north as Damascus- note tiny"forests" and bold pictorial topography. Another Homann engraving specialty: To get a sense of map detail. Castra Israelitarum Deserto depicts the encampment in the desert with the 12 tribes surrounding the Tabernacle. Upper right. Peregrinatio Israelitarum In Deserto depicts the Exodus of the Israelites. Fine condition. Enhanced with attractive early hand colouring. The impression is a little weak towards the lower ... moreleft border. The hand laid paper is robust and stable. Blank verso. Wenceslas Hollar(1607-1677) was born in Prague but after working in Strasbourg and Cologne as an engraver he was employed by Thomas Howard the Earl of Arundel as a draughtsman and moved to London with Howard in 1637 and settled there.
