CIRCA 1680 HAND COLORED DU VAL MAP OF MIDDLE EAST COPPER ENGRAVED

Hand-colored map of the Middle East is by map maker Pierre du Val circa 1680. This map shows the route used by Cyrus the Great to try to seize the throne of Persia from his brother. The map was purchased in the early 1960's in Turkey. It has three beautiful cartouches. The overall measurements of the map are approximately 17 3/4 by 22 inches. The engraving itself measures approximately 16 1/2 by 19 3/8. The map has a reinforced center vertical fold. This map shows the area of modern day Turkey, Cyprus, Iraq, Armenia, Bulgaria and a part of the Black, Caspian and Mediterranean Seas. The colors in the map are still very bright. The condition is ... morequite good. There is even. Overall browning with some foxing. There is one, less than 1/2 inch, tear in the upper left corner. This is only in the margin. This map has been glued to the mat which is a very light weight board-much like cardstock. This can be remedied, probably quite easily, by a person who is experienced as there are places that the map is already free from mat. However, the map paper is darker underneath the mat. There are what appear to be ink drops in the upper corners-two in each corner and quite small. Please view the photos carefully as they are part of this description. Photos have been taken both with and without flash. The details seem to be better without the flash but the actual colors of the map are more accurately portrayed without the flash.
