Northeast Africa and the Red Sea compiled by the French cartographer Rigobert Bonne(1727-1795) successor to Bellin as Chief Hydrogapher at the Dépôt de la Marine. The map extends from the Nile Delta(note elegant"overspill" of map into border) south to what is now Somalia and presents the Arabian peninsula with curiously linear chains of pictorial mountains. Bonne is perhaps best known today for his early maps of the nascent United States which was still in the midst of the Revolutionary War when this map was published- indeed Bonne's maps of the period are among the first to name the"Ḗtats-Unis" as ... moresuch. The map was compiled for the atlas volume Bonne produced to accompany the profoundly influential work Histoire philosophique et politique. From the Latest Authorities and was published in London by John Cary. It is dated 1804 in the lower margin as well as in the title oval. The image area measures a generous 46.2 x 51.8 cm[18-1/4" x 20-1/4" There is wonderful detail throughout. With hundreds of place names. Topography is shown in relief, by hachure lines, and shading accents the coastline. The distance scale at lower right is demarcated in Great Arabian miles, Persian parasanges, British statute miles, and French leagues. The map labels ... morenumerous caravan routes converging on Mecca. And it shows the course followed by the Frigate La Venus. Which charted the Red Sea, the Persian Gulf, and the Indian Ocean before disappearing in a hurricane with all crew and cargo in 1788. Interesting notations fill many of the lesser known regions. The map was published for the Royal Geographical Society by John Murray Albermarle. London, in 1834, and the image area measures 17.7 x 11.3 cm[7" x 4-1/2" It is titled The Red Sea from the late Surveys. 1834. Topography is drawn in relief and the map labels numerous features along the coast on both sides of the sea. Between the Gulf of Suez and the port of Mokha(Mocha, Yemen) This map was printed 35 years before the opening of the Suez Canal. But there had already been great interest in developing a water connection between the Mediterranean and the Red Sea. The"surveys" referred to in the title likely to those of Robert Moresby who spent ... morefour years(1829-1833) completing a full survey of the Red Sea with HMS Palinurus and HMS Benares. Moresby noted an extensive range of detail. Including reefs, harbors and anchorages. The map also likely acknowledges the findings of British general and explorer Francis Rawdon Chesney who submitted a report in 1830 on the feasibility of making a Suez Canal. His report was the original basis of Ferdinand de Lesseps' great undertaking. And in 1869 Lesseps greeted Chesney in Paris as the"father" of the canal. Condition: This map is in very good condition.
