ASIA MINOR. A highly decorative map of Asia Minor originally issued by John Tallis. Probably one of the best known map-makers and publishers of the 19th Century. The maps were published circa 1850 and are considered the last series of decorative maps of the world, Contained within an elaborate border the maps were generally decorated with vignettes and scenes depicting particular views and local inhabitants. The present map of"Asia Minor" dates from a later publication circa 1865 and has no vignettes, but retains the decorative border. The map was drawn and engraved by John Rapkin. Original, steel-engraved map of Turkey, containing the Provinces in Asia Minor, by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge(SDUK) published as part of the Society's Atlas in 1844, in London, by Chapman and Hall(title-page of the atlas is shown below. The SDUK began its map publishing project under the leadership of Captain Francis Beaufort R.N. in 1829, and published the maps in parts, haltingly, over the next 15 years, completing the series in 1844, finally permitting the publication of a whole atlas. Many of the maps were actually drawn by Beaufort, who at the time was the Hydrographer to the Royal Navy, and all were closely supervised by him. J. C. Walker worked closely with Beaufort in engraving the maps. 1692 Muller Map of Turkey, Syria, Holy Land, Middle East
1692 Muller Map- Anatolien Johann U. Muller was responsible for a world geography. Geographia totius orbis compendaria' containing some of the smallest maps ever printed. The 103 tiny maps were probably engraved by Gabriel C. Bodenehr and were published by Georg Kuhnen in Ulm, Germany in 1692. This map comes from that edition. The map includes the regions of Natolia. Cyprus, Turcomania, Syria, Diarbeck, and the Holy Land. Major cities are noted, the topography is illustrated. There is fine detail for such a tiny map. The map measures 2.5" by 3" on a full page of text. And has later outline hand colouring, and is in good condition except for printer's creases at the left side of the map. Overall, these are ... morevery fine maps on strong paper, blank on the reverse with original handcoloring as issued, impression is very strong and crisp as seen in the pics, with no centerfolds making it a very nice map for framing. Size: The map image measures approximately 9 by 11 inches(23x28cm) on a 11 by 13" page(27x33cm) with a margin all around as seen in the main pic. Condition: The map is in Good condition for its age with overall tonal aging and original handcoloring as issued. Blank on the reverse, printed on a strong flexible page, not brittle, basically as seen in the pics. There is some darkening and wear around the edges, a couple of chipped corners and light foxing along the top edge in margin only as seen, otherwise the map image area is very clean with a nice antique quality on strong paper that would frame up nicely.
