This is a map from an edition of Mitchell’s New General Atlas which was published in 1862. The map has original handcoloring. It is a single sheet measuring slightly over 12 x 15 inches in size. With the map image surrounded by an ornate decorative border. The map is in excellent and attractive condition, with only a slight bit of age browning. The page is blank on its backside. The map presents much of the Middle East. Drawn to a scale of approximately 225 miles to the inch, as its borders existed over 150 years ago. The different countries are nicely delineated in contrasting pastel colors. There is a small inset map of“Palestine or the Holy Land. On the main map. Present-day Israel is identified as Palestine, which ... moreis part of Syria, which is not a separate country, but only a subdivision of Turkey.
