Size: The map image measures. Between the neat lines, approximately 3 3/4 by 5 1/2 inches(10x14cm) and is on a 4 1/4 by 7" 12x17cm) page as seen in the pic with a wide margin all around for framing as seen in the main pic. Condition: The map is in Very Good to Excellent condition with overall light tonal ageing. Uncolored as issued, blank on the reverse, printed on a heavy paper. It is basically as seen in the pics. There are a few pinholes along the binding edge margin, otherwise the map image is very clean and would frame up nicely. The pics are accurate of the actual map. Description: This is a fine example of Christian van Adrichem's rare 1590 map of the lands granted to the Tribe of Simeon at the time of Joshua's division of the Twelve Tribes. Oriented to the East and identifies the lands of the Philistines as well as timber lands rich in Cedar. The Tribe of Simeon occupied the region southwest of Canaan and was bounded by the lands granted to the Tribes of Dan and Judah. Numerous Biblical sites are noted throughout. This map is the tenth of ten maps of the Holy Land prepared by Christian van Adrichem for publication in his Theatrum Terrae Sanctae. Adrichem's maps for the Theatrum were prepared between 1580 and 1585. But were published posthumously by his associate, Gerardis Brunius of Koln, in 1590. The publication went through several later editions and served as a basis for most subsequent maps of the Holy Land well into the 18th century. It is approximately 149 years old with original handcoloring and a centerfold as issued. Labeled in Latin. It is from Theodor Menke's Orbis Antiqui Descriptio Atlas. Gotha: Justus Perthes. 1866) It is designed by Friedrich von Stulpnagel as stated in the bottom left margin and the publisher Justius Pethes is stated in bottom center margin. A copy of the Atlas title page with date is included for authenticity. The map bears a striking resemblance to the Spruner maps that appeared in the Spruner-Menke Historical Atlas that was in production ... moreduring the same period, as well as the Stieler Atlas for which Stulpnagel designed a large number of maps, along with the cartographer Petermann. Certainly, the map is representative of the highly detailed and superb quality of German maps that were produced from this circle of cartographers and scholars who were published in various atlases by Justus Pethes from the mid to late 19th century. Size: The map image area measures approximately 7 3/4 by 10(20x26cm) inches on a 9 3/4 by 12 1/2" 25x31cm) page with a margin all around for matting. As seen in the main pic. Condition: It is in Very Good condition. Printed on heavy paper with original hand coloring, blank on the reverse. There are few minor light spots nothing distracting, otherwise it has nice strong color that would frame up well, see the pics for more on condition. The pics are of the actual map.
