Meaning that they could be removed as a single intact sheet. The double maps have a single fold in the center. The single-page maps have no folds at all. Condition The overall condition of the map is very good. The colors are bright and vibrant and the quality of the printing is excellent. Minor foxing and spots in the margins; otherwise ... morevery good. ALL THESE MAPS ARE PRINTED ON ONE SIDE ONLY. Remarks These maps are from the First Edition of. Many of the maps are based on maps that first appeared in Richard Andree's Algemeiner Hand-Atlas(Leipzig. 1880s) which is considered one of the most visually pleasing atlases from the late 19th century. The maps are finely detailed and the printing is sharp and crisp with no off-setting. The paper is heavy and still quite bright, with only minor even age-toning to the extremes of the margins.

Turcici Imperi Imago 47.5 cm x 34 cm copperplate engraving. 55 cm x 43 cm sheet size, modern hand colour, Amsterdam, engraved 1606, printed 1619 We are pleased to offer this scarce example of the beautifully engraved map of Turkey and environs(Van der Krogt 8110:1A) compiled by(1563-1612) from the 1619 French edition of the famous Mercator-Hondius Atlas. Hondius based the map on the 1570"Natoliae" map of Abraham Ortelius. Which in turn was based on a map issued in 1564 by the Piedmontese geographer Giacomo Gastaldi. Hondius purchased the map copperplates of the renowned Gerard Mercator(1512-1594) from Mercator's heirs and with those legendary maps as a foundation he added maps of his own such as this classic map which was introduced to the atlas in 1606. A practice later continued by his son Henricus Hondius and his brother ... morein law Jan Jansson that allowed the eventual publication of nearly 50 editions in multiple languages of the Mercator-Hondius atlas. A much sought-after map, t his exceptionally well preserved example exhibits hand colour work of the very finest calibre and will make a superb presentation if matted and framed. We begin our survey of the map with a view of Constantinopple and environs where an elegant dhow with an Ottoman banner sails the Black Sea. Several trademark engraving styles employed by Jodocus Hondius are present on the map such as the moiré pattern for water. Dense horizontal lines for littoral waters and of course flamboyant calligraphy as in the presentation of Bulgaria seen below: A fine sea monster surfaces near Cyprus: Handsome title cartouche with strapwork frame: To get a sense of map detail. Fine. Original, steel-engraved map of Asia Minor, by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge(SDUK) published as part of the Society's Atlas in 1844, in London, by Chapman and Hall. The SDUK began its map publishing project under the leadership of Captain Francis Beaufort R.N. in 1829, and published the maps in parts, haltingly, over the next 15 years, completing the series in 1844, finally permitting the publication of a whole atlas. Many of the maps were actually drawn by Beaufort, who at the time was the Hydrographer to the Royal Navy, and all were closely supervised by him. J. C. Walker worked closely with Beaufort in engraving the maps. Finely engraved, and carefully researched, the maps set a standard of excellence for commercial map-makers in England for decades to come. The maps were published circa 1850 and are considered the last series of decorative maps of the world, Contained within an elaborate border the maps were generally decorated with vignettes and scenes depicting particular views and local inhabitants. The present map of"Asia Minor" dates from a later publication circa 1865 and has no vignettes, but retains the decorative border. The map was drawn and engraved by John Rapkin. Original, steel-engraved map of Turkey, containing the Provinces in Asia Minor, by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge(SDUK) published as part of the Society's Atlas in 1844, in London, by Chapman and Hall(title-page of the atlas is shown below. The SDUK began its map publishing project under the leadership of Captain Francis Beaufort R.N. in 1829, and published the maps in parts, haltingly, over the next 15 years, completing the series in 1844, finally permitting the publication of a whole atlas. Many of the maps were actually drawn by Beaufort, who at the time was the Hydrographer to the Royal Navy, and all were closely supervised by him. J. C. Walker worked closely with Beaufort in engraving the maps. Findlay's Classical Atlas to Illustrate Ancient Geography. London: W. Tegg& Co. It is drawn and engraved by Findlay whose name appears in the bottom right margin. The publishing place and name appear in the bottom center. A copy of the title page is included for authenticity. It is not matted nor framed being sold as a single sheet as shown in the main pic. Size: The map image measures approximately 8 3/4 by 10 1/2 inches on a 9 1/2 by 12" page with a margin all around for framing. Condition: The map is in Very Good to Excellent ... morecondition with overall tonal aging and original handcolor with a centerfold as issued. Printed on heavy paper and blank on the reverse. It is basically as seen in the pics. There are a couple of minor light spots in the margin as seen in the pics, otherwise it is very clean with no distracting defects to mention. Armenia et Syria 32.5 cm x 27.5 cm copperplate engraving. 35 cm x 29 sheet size, original hand colour, Friedrich Campe, Nürnberg, 1853 We are pleased to offer this elegantly designed historical map of what is now Turkey. Armenia, Syria and environs as constituted during the Roman Empire. The map was originally compiled by the German geographer(1758-1837) for his 1824 Historical Atlas Orbis Terrarum Antiquus. Reichard collaborated with(1775-1836) on the first edition of Stieler's famous Handatlas which of course became in its many editions the leading German cartographic publication of the 19th century and well into the 20th as well. This state of the map is from the 1853 Sixth Edition of Reichard's Orbis Terrarum Antiquus and was prepared under the direction of the historian and scholar(1798-1878) As a professor at ... morethe University of Leipzig in the 1820s Forbiger established and taught a new course- Geography of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome" which made use of Reichard's first edition. Thus making Forbiger ideally suited to sustain the work through subsequent posthumous editions. As is evident in this example, the maps are beautifully designed and quite finely engraved- Forbiger elected to produce revised plates for this edition using the medium of steelplate engraving as opposed to the earlier copperplate maps, allowing for exceptionally minute detail. Meticulously engraved with judicious yet vivid original hand colour, this scholarly and exceptionally decorative map will make a fine presentation if matted and framed. The hachure engraving for topography is quite distinctive- a considerably finer line than the contemporary copperplate maps issued for the Stieler atlases.
