Early Original 1900's Pair of Stained Glass Oak Cabinet Doors
Up for auction is an original matching set of stained& beveled glass cabinet doors taken from a Milwaukee bungalow that was built in 1918. There are no cracks or damage of any kind. One piece of the glass has a minor imperfection. It is not a crack or a scratch but it is a line that is a little over an inch. I tried to photograph it but it would not show up in the pictures. I am just trying to be upfront. It is surrounded in beautiful oak that has a great patina. One door measures 20& 3/4 inches tall. 14& 11/16 inches wide. The glass measures 23& 1/2 inches tall and 10& 3/4 inches wide Please see photo's. Please check my other auctions for simalar items. Item will be packed professionally. Talk about an unusual Charleston estate auction find. here is an incredible heavy carved polychrome solid wood Chinese door or heavy gate with a cross beam and side beam frame as well as the heavy raised panel doors with all their original iron fittings. This is an old Chinese door and is extremely heavy as well as somewhat primitive on the unfinished sides of the beams. The polychrome paint is quite worn but is still quite evident and adds so much character to an already gorgeous detailed yet functional heavy door. I have included a number of photographs in an attempt to accurately represent the design. Quality, condition and overall beauty of this delightful antique door. Unfotunately I do not know any additional provenance on the door or have any definitive explanation as to how it arrived in our fair city, though with it being a port ... morecity and with the sheer size and weight, my guess is whenever it came to the US, it was most assuredly by boat long ago. The standing door frame itself is 78 inches tall by 68 inches wide at it's widest points. At beams which extend and is constructed of huge beams 4 1/2 inches wide.The inside doorway entrance(inside the standing frame) is 63 1/2 inches tall and 39 1/4 inches wide, with a bottom crossbeam one would have to step over to enter. In addition there is a large crossbeam I believe goes overhead, hooking into the corbels, 68 inches long by 8 inches wide by 4 1/4 inches thick. There are also two side beams each 73 1/4 inches long by 6 1/2 inches wide by 3 inches thick and the two corbels, carved from blocks roughly 21 1/2 inches by 12 inches by 8 inches. There are no cracks in the glass panes. Half of the screws are original. The remainder are size-correct and have a nice patina that fits in well. The front boasts a grand 19th Century appearance which alone is impressive enough. However when you turn to see the back of the doors you find and incredible pair of life size paintings of what is believed to be a King and Queen. The detail is just remarkable. And apparently painted in real gold although this has not been tested. Large antique doors without the interesting background and without the stunning artwork alone are rather sort after. You are looking at a pair of antique pine leaded glass cabinet doors. They are not painted. They have their original finish on them. They are in good condition. There are a few minor scratches in the finish as you can see in the pics, but nothing major at all. The glass is sturdy and there are no breaks. There are 31 pieces of flat glass in each door. This pair includes round knobs(not sure if brass or steel) It also includes hinges. The pair measures 39 3/8" wide by 40" one is 39 5/8" tall, someone cut it down a hair)tall by 3/4" thick, together. Set of single raised panel antique cabinet doors. Circa 1820. Deminisions for each door: 47" h) x 24" w) Doors are made with mortise& tenon joinery and pegged together. Outside has a slightly raised panel that forms a diamond point at the center of the door. Inside is unpainted and flat. I also have the lock& key that came with the doors. These were cabinet doors in a local Clerk of the Courts office on the Northern Neck of Virginia. They were removed some time ago during a renovation. This is one of three sets.
