The large one which measures slightly over 4" inches wide and the others are right around 3" They also have some bubbles present and some swirling which I tried to show in the pictures. These are very consistent with some of the more decorated Japanese floats. The person I got them from actually said that their father likely brought them back from Japan. As he spent 3 years there. I will leave that up to the purchaser to decipher though as I am not an expert on these items. The man that I bought it from told the story of how his father used a plasma cutter to cut 16 pieces/anchors out to give to his children. He designed them and put names on them. This one has"BILL" on one side. The other side is clear. I have another one that says Bonnie. It measures about 20" x 13 1/2" and is 3/8" thick. It weighs over 7 lbs. HUGE Anchor!! Circa 1700's RARE FIND!!
Massive. Rare, and Historical! This large anchor, SALVAGED FROM THE PENOBSCOT BAY in MAINE is of the ADMIRALTY LONG SHANK DESIGN( as seen in photos) DATING BACK TO THE 1700s! Note the shank,straight arms which form a sharp angle at the crown and at the large diameter ring. It has survived in good condition(typical of wrought iron) and is all intact except for approximately 20% of each fluke as seen in photos. The flukes can be easily repaired if desired,since the wrought iron material is very low in carbon and possesses excellent weldability. It is also missing it's wood stock but can be readily made, preferably from white oak, again if so desired. I never made nor planned to do any repairs. It is magnificent untouched in it's original form, and one of my greatest conversational pieces! Something you will never see again for sale. ... moreThe anchor measurements are as follows: Shank, 11' Fluke to fluke, 6'6" Flukes, 18' wide by 24" long. Square 4 1/2" by 3 1/2" Ring, 20" outside diameter. Estimated weight, 1600 pounds! According to"ANCHORS by N.E. UPHAM" this anchor would be the main bower anchor from a ship approx. 400 tons, or the stream or kedge anchor from a much larger vessel. Interestingly, it was made from a number of iron bars which were tied together,heated and forged under a trip hammer into one bar to form the shank, arms,ring,ect. These component parts were then welded together. The moderate degree of corrosion shows very nicely the forging process which is truly a lost work of art! Although of British design, this anchor may be from a US ship, since this anchor design was copied and made in the US. Also, the Penobscot Bay location where it was found was frequented by US vessels, some of which were sunk there in the Revolutionary War. Antique Anchor 19th Century Ship Wreck Nagshead NC Folding Stock Large Vessel
Antique anchor salvaged off Nagshead. NC in 1972 by a fisherman when it caught in the net. It was found near the'13 Mile Pole' After doing some research and contacting a maritime history expert and marine archeologist and sending photos, we were given the following information. This anchor is from a large vessel. Possibly a warship. The curved lower end of the stock and the swelling on the upper end where it meets the shank indicate it is a folding stock anchor from the 19th century. The diamond-shaped palms are also 19th century. As triangular palms were used in the 18th century but they tended to foul the rope or cable, which would then pull the anchor out backwards. The diamond shape was intended to reduce the chance of that happening. The clamp in the middle of the shank is a"balancing band" to lift the anchor more or ... moreless horizonally onto the ship. It would also serve to hold the stock against the shank when folded for stowage on board. The large ring at the top is 12" across and has a smaller loop attached to it. Anchor measurements: Shank 6 ft; Stock 6.4 ft; Across Palms is 5 ft. The weight is 800-1000 lbs. we have not weighed it. WE WILL RESEARCH DELIVERY OPTIONS AND COST PRIOR TO PURCHASE IF NEEDED. Here is a rare opportunity to own a unique piece of nautical history. This anchor would be a perfect centerpiece for a US Navy Base. Museum, Estate, Marine Center, Yacht Club, or any other publicly viewed property. Based on my research. This anchor is a stocked Admiralty anchor, also known as a Fisherman anchor with a long-shank design. This type of anchor was used by Americans and the British from about 1831 to 1860. The Charleston Navy Yard displays two similar anchors(though larger) and states that this type of anchor was no longer used after 1850. I purchased it more than ten years ago at an estate sale in King George County. Virginia, near the Dahlgren Navy Base. The owners were selling their estate and moving to Florida.
