Brass sextant in a noble wooden box with brass fittings - seafaring nautical A sextant (mirror sextant, also sixtant) is a nautical and optical measuring ... moreinstrument, with which one can determine the angle between the lines of sight to objects that are relatively far away, The name sextant comes from the device frame, which is a sector of a circle with which, as a result of the law of mirrors, angle measurements are twice as large, In contrast, its predecessor, the octant, had an angular scale of at least 90°. On the other hand, the quadrant is a protractor with respect to the perpendicular direction This sextant, which looks like an " old original ", is a finely crafted replica, based on historical models and is primarily used for decorative purposes. Miniture Sextant Octant in Box, 4 inches across, very finely made Nautical item
This is a great condition minature sextant or octant complete with box. I bought it from a flea market antique dealer 15 years ago in Pennsylvania. This item measures only 4 inches by 3 inches and seems to be in good working condition. Very finely made and scales graduated very finely for its size into what appears to be some kind of hard plastic, I believe this could be taken out and used today. I had a comment that from the general appearance of this sextant in photos it is likely a reproduction, I cannot say with certainty how old it is however I examined it closely with a magnifying glass back then, and I just now looked it over again with a magnifying glass; I believe this to be at least 50 years old based on evidence of brass polish in some places. A couple fingerprints I can see evidence of in the brass, the fact that the brass patina ... moreis lighter in areas you can touch and darker where you can't, there seems to be some real minor rust looking stuff in some real minor pitting only visible under a magnifying glass, one of the 2 little mirror shows considerable evidence of age, and just the medium patina itself in the areas you can touch would take many years to form. There is some evidence that an artificial finish was applied to this at one time(as on most all brass instruments) I believe under close examination that the patina in the places that can be touched is likely an honest one. Also I have never seen another like this and usually reproductions are mass produced. Because at first glance the general appearance of the item and the box does make it appear to be more modern, I will accept a return if you believe my assessment to be incorrect. Postage is $7.00 if within the US, more if ins. is desired or if you are outside the US; no charge for careful packing.

After each series of shots, these marks would be visually averaged, and the average time of the series determined from a stopwatch. ... moreAlthough the technique was relatively crude, the Army boasted that an experienced navigator using an in instrument of this sort could"set his plane down at the end of a transoceanic flight within an error radius of only 15 miles, less than four minutesâe(tm) flying time. 8-INCH HADLEY'S BRASS MARINE OCTANT SEXTANT + TEAK CASE. WORKING REPLICA. RARE!
Wood& Brass Construction Large 8-inch Navigational Octant in Beautiful Teak Case Old 1970s re-creation for navigation and seafaring enthusiasts. In reasonable condition. Fairly accurate but not recommended for passage-making. Great as a ademonstration model for navigation schools and science enthusiasts. Nothing more. Brass and light-wood re-creation of one of the oldest and most effective forms of navigation- the octant. Literally, 1/8 of a circle, or 45 degrees. This was in use for several centuries before the sextant. Its arrangement of mirrors allows it to measure twice the angle of the scale. This is a nice demonstration piece of eight inch radius and weighs about a kilo. Care has been taken not to use heavy woods and to keep the brass parts slim to enable easy lightweight handling. There is a hinged magnifier to help read the German ... moreSilver vernier scale. And there are six swing-arm filters. Like with traditional octants, an adjustable brass peep hole is provided instead of the telescopes that are used in sextants. On the back, is a rounded wooden handle that allows for a comfortable grip. G reat for collectors, demonstratiors and students, Not callibrated, so not intended for passage-making navigation. Antique marine octant from 19th century in good condition-circa mid 1800's
Octant used for marine navigation from the mid 19th century. Probably sold between 1855-72, with wooden case, all in good condition. The inlaid ivory scale is intact and and legible and the-brass and ebony are intact and in very good condition. The piece has three sunshades for each mirror and the mirros are in equal condition. The actual makers name is not stated on the octant. For is age this is an above average example of an octant of that period. The shape and type of manufacture, as it was imported, indicates it was most likely made in England. The box itself has hinges and two clasps that are intact and work. The octant fits nicely in the box. The legible label inside the box is very legible(see photo) and states Gordon and Bacon were the importers of New London, Conn. and were actually a family owned jewelry store that also imported ... moremarine instruments and watches during that time frame. The previous octant owner believed the actual date of manufacture was around 1790 but I cannot verify except that it was made before or during the 1855-72 time frame that they were in the import business of marine instruments per my research.

Antique Octant Maritime Navigation Instrument Bone Inlay
This is a great antique maritime navigational instrument. An octant. It appears to be in fair condition, though I have no idea how to actually use it. It is 13.5” tall x 11” wide. The skeleton is dark stained wood, the fittings seem to be brass. It has bone inlay on the“ruler” and a label in the center that reads“Wood, Liverpool” There is a bit of green corrosion on the brass, but all the knobs etc seem to move freely. It comes in a wooden case, probably the original. This is an amazing find! PLEASE READ BEFORE YOU BID* PAYMENT: Winning bidders and"buy it now" shoppers. Hartmann's Practika Library Edition Book Astrolabe Sundial Octant Surveying
Hard cover. 310 pp. Library Edition Book Size- 8 5/8" x 11" is being offered at a sale price of $100.00. Georg Hartmann lived from 1489 to 1564. As a young man he studied both mathematics and theology. Becoming a Lutheran churchman. For over forty years he designed and constructed the astrolabes, armillary spheres, sundials, globes and quadrants that are now the pride of some of the world's most prestigious museums. Hartmann must have felt the need to record exactly how he designed these instruments, for in the summers of 1518 and 1526-1528 he scribbled down in Low German a rough draft(illustrated with even rougher sketches) of his mathematical techniques. No publisher ever considered it, for to refine this raw material into a logical and understandable treatise would necessitate enormous effort and dedication. Hartmann is therefore ... moretruly fortunate that, after nearly five centuries, John Lamprey has undertaken this task(including a translation into English) as a labor of love. The work took him six years, but the result- concisely entitled Hartmann's Practika- is a credit to both author and editor/translator. Now we can discover at first hand how this master craftsman laid out his beautiful instruments. Lamprey has rearranged and edited Hartmann's draft into seven chapters(books" according to the type of instrument described. Book 1- Block Sundial Book 2- Diptych Dial Book 3- Shepard's Dial Book 4- Lines of Declination Book 5- Hemispherium and Chalice Dial Book 6- Nuremberg Portable Dial Book 7- Designing the Astrolabe. Book review courtesy of Allan Mills. 2003 Praise for Hartmann's Practika: You should feel very proud of your accomplishment. It was a Herculean undertaking. One that not only will make important manuscript material accessible to a wide audience, but one for which you will be remembered. Will Andrews. AMERICAN MANUFACTURE ANTIQUE SEXTANT OCTANT B. WOOD LIVERPOOL 1857-1866
IMPORTANT AMERICAN MANUFACTURE ANTIQUE SEXTANT OCTANT B. WOOD LIVERPOOL 1857-1866 Up for auction is a mid 19th Century(1824-1866) B.WOOD Liverpool" antique sextant with ebony frame. Ivory graduated arc and veneer, and bronze machinery that is in very good operating condition. This instrument could have been used on a whaling ship during that time. The arc measures from-1 to plus 100 degrees. This, all original, and magnificently made instrument has a brass index arm with rib measuring 10” inches long. And has a frame width of 11inches at the arc. It is fitted with an early style ivory veneer scale, reading from right to left from 0 to 1000 arc minutes, a peep sight, three sun shades, and an index and horizon mirror. The 3 sun shades are square with round glassare three different colors. All the engraving still retains 100 percent of ... moreits factory applied midnight black ink. The name. Arc and veneer are masterfully engraved with all the markings clear and sharp. The central piece of ivory fitted on the cross bar is imprinted, B.WOOD LIVERPOOL CONDITION SEXTANT: The instrument. Its ivory name, graduated arc, and it’s hardware are in Great condition, with only a few spots of age, and slight chip in the ebony wood frame(as shown in the Pictures) Every part and finish is in unbelievably good, original condition belying its 155 years of age. All three original bronze legs are present. With normal age bronze tarnish. The mirrors, as expected, are degraded by age but still work. The three filters are intact with no cracks. The instrument is dusty and could use a good cleaning I did not want to destroy it. Refer to the many pictures to determine the condition of this rare instrument. This sextant is virtually in the condition that my father had in his home office for the past 40 years. THE CASE: Inside the case there is a different name on the label. But the sextant fits perfectly. I think it is made of mahogany? The label inside the case is AARON BREED Nautical Instrument Makers No 166 Broad. Corner of Purchase St. B
Antique 19th Century Sextant Octant - No Reserve!
Historic Antique 19th Century Octant/ Sextant This is a unique opportunity to bid on this beautiful maritime instrument with a fascinating provenance. It is a lovely piece but I have been storing it for some time and would like it to go to someone who will truly appreciate it on a daily basis. It was originally the property of Captain Charles A. Watts. The last Captain of the 1886 Square Rigger Balclutha. This beautiful. 300 foot ship is now moored in the San Francisco Bay as part of the San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park. For more on the provenance of this sextant. See"History" below. Thank You for Bidding on this one-of-a-kind Treasure! This was originally posted as an Octant but some have told me it's a Sextant. Not sure which one it is. My apologies. I have also learned some more information about this item since ... morethe original posting so please read the description thoroughly before bidding. Thank You! Manufacturer: I could not find any indication of the manufacturer. Either on the box or the instrument itself, and I don’t know enough about these instruments to venture a speculation. However, I did find a photo and description of another one online that looked almost identical and was estimated to have been made around 1880. That one had the name"L. Van der Feedl. Antwerp" etched into the arc. The item listed here has no etching but looks identical in every way except it has one additional shade for the index mirror. I found another one online that also looks exactly like this(including the 4 index mirror shades) by H. Hughes of London dated 1850. But it also had the maker's name engraved on the front which this one doesn't have. That one was called an"octant" by the seller so I'm not too sure which one it is now. For simplicity's sake(if not accuracy's) I refer to it as a"sextant" in the description below. Materials& Features: It appears to be made of solid brass with a polished. Silver-colored metal scale on the arc, possibly plat

The label is in great shape, as well as is the instrument itself. The original owner ... morepainted his initials"I.C. a single star and the date"1846" on the exterior top of the case. The brass plate for the lock is present, though the lock itself is missing. The octant has its stained glass slides and all other parts present. Some information on the maker is as follows: Edmund March Blunt(1770-1862) founded a nautical bookstore in Newburyport. Massachusetts, in 1793 and soon expanded into nautical map and chart publishing. The Blunt firm was most famous for various editions of The American Coast Pilot beginning in 1796. In 1802. Blunt published the first edition of The New American Practical Navigator by Nathaniel Bowditch. A popular instructional book in the use of instruments and celestial bodies in navigation. ANTIQUE 19th CENTURY MARITIME SEXTANT OCTANT JANET TAYLOR LONDON BONE INLAY
Antique 19th century maritime sextant with original wood case. What makes this sextant unique is the inscription on the bone inlay"Taylor.103.Minories" This was the address of Mrs. Janet Taylor's London based Nautical Academy& Navigation Warehouse. Janet Taylor was a well known 19th century author and navigation expert, who received awards from the King Holland& Prussia, in addition to the Pope. Some of her books included: Normal.dotm 0 0 1 25 144 pellissippi state community college 1 1 176 12.0 0 false 18 pt 18 pt 0 0 false false false Lunar Tables(1833) Principles of Navigation Simplified(1834) Epitome of Navigation& Nautical Astronomy(1842) Directions for using a Planisphere of the Fixed Stars(1846) In 1835 Mrs. Taylor opened her Nautical Academy. Which would remain open until 1868. So, this sextant was likely ... moreproduced during this time. According to author Mary T. Buck, this academy was well known at the time, as it was endorsed by the East India Company& British Admiralty. I would consider the condition of the sextant to be very good. Considering that it is probably about 150 years old. The wood case does have a couple of splits in the wood& there is some wear on parts of the sextant, but overall nothing that takes away from the displayability. This is a very unique piece that is a must have for any nautical navigation collector. $30 for shipping within the USA.

Antique Sextant Octant Ebony & Bone Wm Senter Portland ME Keystone Case 1800s
Antique Sextant Ebony and Bone Wm Senter Portland ME with Keystone Wood Case 1840s to 1880s Note: All items in our store include NO sales tax to our US customers! Here is a great piece for your buying consideration. Recently acquired it at an estate sale. Would make a great gift or keep it for yourself. Wow. Here is quite a nautical piece for your consideration. Looks to be a sextant where curvature arm is 1/6 of a circle, an octant is 1/8 of a circle. The piece was made by a William Senter of Portland Maine. He was a jeweler, watch maker and nautical instrument maker. Senter had his business from 1836 to 1888. The sextant appears to be made of ebony. Bone and metal. The sextant itself has the 3 pieces of glass in the pieces that come up from the sextant. One of the smaller pieces of glass is cracked. There is a single metal adjustable peep ... morehole sight that stem is a little bent. There appears to be a couple of screws and one of the metal straps is missing the end piece on the back, not the side the bone markings are on. The makers name and city and state are noted in bone in the front center of the sextant with some sort of decorative bone ball with a screw going thru it. There is a porcelain plate on the back with a paper label for William Senter store at 54 Exchange Place in Portland, ME on it as well. There is a partial paper label of the seller of the instrument, a store in on Maiden Lane in Lower Manhattan near Pier 18 on the South River. The graduated arc seems to be made of ebony as well and then has bone set in it with the markings on it. There is also a bone piece with markings on it on the index arm. The ebony on the back of one of the side arms splits at some point in the past and was repaired. One of the ends of the ebony sextant's frame. Top right, 1.25" along the graduated arc broke off at some point in the past and was repaired. Not done as well as it should have been, as not flush with the rest of the piece on the back, and not sure if that is the original piece. The bone part of the sext
