Antique Martime Brass SEXTANT in Box~From Estate~No Reserve
For your consideration is this antique maritime brass sextant. In what I think is its original box. I purchased it long ago at an estate sale, and it has been packed away since then. Since I know nothing about it. I'll try to describe it! It has multiple lenses, which move in different directions. It has one loose part, which only needs 2 very small brass screws to reattach it to the sextant. The sextant needs a really good cleaning, both on the sextant itself and on the lenses. Since I know zilch about it, I'll leave the cleaning to the new owner, who I'm sure will know what to do. It does have what looks like normally ocurring wear on an object that would have been used quite a bit. I have looked everywhere on the sextant and can not find a maker's name. The box is lovely. And may be Rosewood. There is some wear to the brass ... morehinges. I just noticed that the box lid has loosened on one side, and will need to be reglued. If you have any questions. This antique marine sextant is an example of a fine German precision instrument by W. Ludolph of Bremerhaven(Germany) as is inscribed on the bottom and center of the arc.Also on the far left corner of the arc is the word Welag(correct spelling) and the numbers XXI743 beside it.The numbers on the silver face of the arc are visible and if cleaned would be very legible. The silver center of the numbered part of the arc has brass on the top and bottom as do sextants of this age. The total weight of the instrument would indicate the frame is probably made of brass.All seven sun shades are attached. In working order, and the mirrors are also intact and in good shape. The scope has two lenses and the magnifier for the arc reader also has a lens. The tangent on the arc works and adjusts fine. Antique South Shields sextant in keystone case. First let me say I know nothing about these so I am just describing what I see. This is a sextant. The engraving on the curved part says l. then something I can't make out and then it says south shields. I don't know if it is complete but look at the pictures and see there are some small eye pieces that look like small telescopes that come with it. Its dirty and the box looks like it was painted over and a crack repaired years ago on the bottom but it is a solid box. There are two latches and a keyhole(no key) It looks complete and I do not see anything that looks broken or missing. There are lenses in different colors attached to the sextant. It is made of brass and is unusual in that has a Bakelite handgrip. It has 7 different glass lenses to reduce the light in the line of sight. This is a genuine old sextant– not a reproduction. The only other one I could find information on was located in the Victorian Museum. I believe they were produced in the 1940s by Heath& Co New Eltham. London. It measures 25 cm or 10 inches across and together with the box. The combined weight is over 4 kg unpacked. It is in good condition. Inside a storage auction I won here in Miami were 2 boxes that contained a collection of incredible artifacts. Included were brandy or wine mallets from the 1700's. Musket remnants including trigger guards& barrels, a whole jar of musket balls, torpedo bottles, another jar of musket flints& grape shot ammo- and a complete grape shot canister; still in it's original wrapping& looking like it could be shoved into a cannon today! And finally. This beautiful sextant! I posted photos of it on treasuenet asking for information on it& was told it was most probally a WHYTE THOMSON& CO. GLASGOW AND S.SHIELDS Antique Sextant circa 1890! If you compare it to the photo of ... moreone below, you will se they were right! A beautiful piece of history when a ship's crew's life depended on this instrument. Perfect as a desk top display. Antique nautical display or possibly to refurbish or for parts. AND HERE IS A LOOK AT THE ONLY COMPLETE(Not recreated from ammo found) GRAPE SHOT CANNON LOAD/CANNISTER THAT I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO FIND- THIS WAS A COLLECTION FULL OF RARE. HIGH END ARTIFACTS.
